The season hasn’t even started, but Absegemi High School graduate Ben Martin already has caught a break as he seeks playing time at running back for the Rutgers football team.

Martin had been expected to be limited to special teams as a sophomore this season. But that changed when running back Paul James suffered a high ankle sprain. James will be out 2-5 weeks and Martin will move up to third-string, coach Kyle Flood said in quotes provided Monday by Rutgers.

“I think Ben will be in the third spot right now, but I would leave myself the flexibility to amend that as we go through the week,” Flood said.

The Scarlet Knights open their season Saturday at Tulane.
