Last month’s news that Rutgers University and the University of Maryland would move to the Big Ten Conference caught the eye of one of the state’s top football recruits.

Southern Regional High School junior Mike Gesicki has a full scholarship offer from Rutgers and has talked to Maryland coaches.

Gesicki, a 6-foot-6 wide receiver who projects as a tight end in college, said in a phone interview Sunday night that he’s excited about both teams moving.

“That’s awesome that they’re moving to the Big Ten,” Gesicki said. “It shows that they’re not afraid to (raise) their level of competitiveness, play some tougher teams. Big Ten football, that’s Penn State, that’s Ohio State - those are some big teams. Just to show that they’re confident in their programs to move up to that level of football is tremendous.”

Gesicki also has a full scholarship offer from Boston College and has talked to several other high-profile Division I schools. But he said he’s focused on Friday night’s South Jersey Group V championship game for now.

“Right now, I'm just working hard,” Gesicki said. “Everything's going to pan itself out.”
