Dale Earnhardt Jr. snapped his four-year NASCAR Sprint Cup winless streak, and now his buddy Martin Truex Jr. hopes he’s next.
Truex, the Stafford Township native whose streak is at more than five years, became friends with Earnhardt while racing in the Nationwide Series almost a decade ago for Earnhardt’s JR Motorsports. They also were teammates at Dale Earnhardt Inc. for the first two seasons of Truex’s Cup career.
“I can see another Junior win coming this weekend, but this time it's this Junior,” Truex said in quotes provided Tuesday by his team, Michael Waltrip Racing. “I am really happy for Dale Jr. He's a good friend of mine, and I appreciate the chance he gave me to prove myself in this sport.”
Truex knows better than just about anyone what Earnhardt went through. Truex’s drought is the longest in the Cup series among drivers who have raced full-time for competitive teams.
“NASCAR is a tough sport,” Truex said.
Truex is having his best season this year, with eight top-10 finishes in 15 races. He figures a win is not far off, and he’d like to do it this weekend in Sonoma, Calif.
“The deal to getting a win is simple,” he said. “It's all about being in the right position and doing it consistently. We've been running consistently in the top-five and top-10 positions. That's what every winning team does. Eventually, you are going to hit on it.
“This past weekend (at Michigan), we had a tremendous amount of speed, but the cautions just didn't fall right for us and we got a fender torn up on a restart. Those types of things we can't control. It just wasn't our day. However, if we can keep going to the track and being fast, one of these days it will all come together. A NAPA win in the Napa Valley has a nice ring to it."
