Martin Truex Jr. has finished fifth in two of the past three NASCAR Sprint Cup spring races at Martinsville Speedway.

Another run like that would be huge for the Stafford Township native Sunday.

Truex is 19th in the standings through five races. His 18th-place finish two weeks ago in Fontana, Calif., was his third-best result of the season, but Truex said it was his worst race. He cited bad luck for the two worse finishes but said Fontana was just a poor performance.

“California was really the first weekend that my team has struggled, so I am not overly concerned with what we need to do or change going into this weekend,” Truex said in quotes provided this week by his team, Michael Waltrip Racing. “We’ve had fast cars all season. We just missed it at California. It happens sometimes.”

The Cup series did not race last week, and Truex said that helped.

“This race couldn’t happen at a better time for us,” he said. “We are all rested up thanks to the off weekend.”
