My wife and I had lunch on New Year's Day at Sack O' Subs in Ventnor (what can I say? I'm a big spender), and the place was packed with clots of hungover and still-drunk 20-somethings. After partying all night for New Year's Eve, they were loud and obnoxious and full of themselves ... as 20-somethings are. But that's not my point.
It struck me that Atlantic City has to be of the funnest places in the country for someone in their 20s to spend New Year's Eve. There are so many hot clubs and bars, all of them either within walking distance of each other or a short cab or jitney ride away. Plus all the usual gambling, eating and entertainment possibilities. (OK, the Bobby Vinton show probably wouldn't draw them, but you always need something for everyone.)
So here's my idea: Atlantic City should strive to be the Fort Lauderdale of Winter Break for the 20-somethings.
True, there's not a whole lot to do in Atlantic City during the daytime in the middle of the winter. (Sorry, folks, that's just a fact.) But kids this age like to sleep all day anyway! So what better place to do it? Come to Atlantic City, party all night under the bright lights, then sleep through the gray day.
If the city isn't already marketing itself to this set over Winter Break, it should be.
