Sure, Gov. Chris Christie’s speeches at the Brookings Institution and other big public-policy think tanks and institutes in Washington are impressive. (To some, anyway.)

But has anyone besides me wondered about his silence about the obscene tree-cutting on the Garden State Parkway down here in little old South Jersey?

Christie usually can’t stop himself from attacking unnecessary spending and other stuff at the state’s independent authorities. But he has not uttered a word that I’ve heard on the N.J. Turnpike Authority’s clear-cutting on the parkway.

My hunch? It’s just further proof that everything Christie does is about burnishing his image with conservative Republicans nationwide to further his presidential ambitions.

And if he comes across as a tree-hugger, that’s just not going to fly with that crowd. Never mind that thousands of South Jersey residents are outraged at what the Turnpike Authority did on the parkway.

Maybe somebody will ask the Big Guy about those trees at his town hall meeting in Cape May on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, on a different note, check out this (mostly) complimentary story about Atlantic City in today’s Washington Post. Nice not to read the usual A.C. bashing.
