Mark McCormick, the pro at Suburban Golf Club in Union, joined Phil Mickelson for a practice round at the U.S. Open on Tuesday at The Olympic Club’s Lake Course in San Francisco.

The two played a pair of 17-year-old amateurs, Beau Hossler and Alberto Sanchez, and lost 1-up.

McCormick had a tougher time Thursday in the first round of the national championship. He birdied one hole but made seven bogeys and two triple bogeys for a 12-over-par 82 to tie for 153rd place.

The Middletown, N.J., resident hit 5-of-18 greens in regulation (27.8 percent) and 3-of-14 fairways (21.43 percent).

McCormick tees off today in the last group — 5:42 p.m. — on the ninth hole.

Mickelson, by the way, shot a 76. Hossler had a 70, two strokes better than Sanchez.
