The Atlantic City High School boys basketball team will probably be without one of its best players this opening weekend.

Vikings coach Gene Allen confirmed Thursday morning that senior Jahleem Montague injured his knee in the preseason.

The 6-foot-9 Montague tore ligaments in his knee between his sophomore and junior seasons. He played as a junior and emerged as a defensive force for the Vikings, who won the state Group IV title.

Montague, who developed a more consistent offensive game in the offseason, was expected to be one of the Vikings leaders this season.

Allen said Montague injured his knee in the first scrimmage of the season and then hurt it again at Wednesday’s practice. Allen said Thursday morning that Montague will undergo tests on the knee soon.

Atlantic City plays at Egg Harbor Township on Friday ay 5:30 p.m. in the season opener. The Vikings then play Medford Tech on Saturday 7 p.m. at Ocean City High School in an Ocean City PBA Tipoff Weekend contest.
