The Cape-Atlantic League voted today to apply to join the West Jersey Football League.

The vote was 13-5 with four abstentions, according to Mainland Regional athletic director and CAL president Mike Gatley.

The CAL would not join the West Jersey League before 2014 season. The West Jersey League consists of 65 schools in Gloucester, Camden, Salem, Burlington and Mercer counties.

Today's vote was the first step for the CAL. The West Jersey League must approve the CAL's application. CAL schools must then vote again on whether they want to merge. Today's vote was no guarantee the CAL will join the West Jersey League.

"We need to look at all options," Gatley said. "There's just as much interest in keeping the tradition of the league."
