The high school football playoffs could be pushed back a week because of Hurricane Sandy.

The New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association announced Monday that if any school cannot reopen until Monday (Nov. 5)  the football playoffs will be pushed back a week.

The new schedule would be:

First round: Nov. 16-17

Second round: Nov. 30-Dec. 1

Championship games: Dec. 7-8

This schedule would allow Thanksgiving games to be played.

If all schools are back in session by Thursday, this weekend’s games must be played by Sunday. The playoff schedule will remain unchanged.

First round: Nov. 9-10

Second round: Nov. 16-17

Championship games: Nov. 30-Dec. 1

The NJSIAA also said that a decision on whether to hold this weekend’s cross country sectional championships will be made Wednesday.

The NJSIAA also announced scheduling updates for the following sports:

Boys soccer: Goal is for first round games to be completed by Thursday and second round to be finished by Saturday.

Field hockey: Goal is to complete quarterfinal games by Saturday

Girls soccer: Goal is to complete the fist round by Friday and the second round by Monday.

The NJSIAA will allow boys and girls soccer teams to play doubleheaders.
