David Montgomery, general partner, president and chief executive officer of the Phillies, released a statement this afternoon expressing disappointment in Phillies reliever Antonio Bastardo.
Major League Baseball suspended Bastardo for 50 games today for his participation in the Biogenesis performance enhancing drugs scandal.
"We respect the fact that Antonio has acknowledged his serious mistake and accepted his 50-game suspension,” Montgomery said in a prepared statement.
Montgomery said the club looks forward to a time when performance enhancing drugs are completely out of baseball.
"Hopefully, the sanctions announced today will bring us closer to that day," he said.
The Phillies are off today. They will play the Chicago Cubs at Citizens Bank Park on Tuesday.
