PHILADELPHIA – Friday began as a rainy, dreary day.

But the sun was shining as the Phillies home opener approached.

Phillies fans probably hope their team’s season follows the same arc.

Philadelphia hosted the Kansas City Royals at 4:10 p.m. at Citizens Bank Park.

The Phillies got off to slow start by dropping their first two games in Atlanta before beating the Braves 2-0 Thursday night.

Plenty of fans tailgated in the parking lots around Citizens Bank as Friday’s game neared. A street musician playing a clarinet entertained fans walking to the stadium with a rendition of the Beatles “Here Comes the Sun.”

The Phillies entered Citizens Bank by walking through Ashburn Alley in center field.

This home opener was different for fans, however.

For the first time since 2007, the Phillies were not celebrating a playoff appearance. Philadelphia finished 81-81 in 2012.

Kyle Hendrick was scheduled to start for the Phillies. The game marked the regular season home debut of newcomers Ben Revere (CF) and Michael Young (3B).
