EDISON TOWNSHIP - The state public school high school football playoffs will remain the same for at least three more years.

Public high school playoffs currently end at the sectional (South Jersey, Central Jersey, North I and North II) levels. A proposal to change the constitution of the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association to allow state-wide public school playoffs did not receive enough votes to pass at the NJSIAA general membership meeting at Pines Manor restaurant on Monday afternoon.

Schools voted 167-102 with three abstentions in favor of he change. But the measure needed two-thirds approval (190 votes) to pass. The NJSIAA governs high school sports in New Jersey. According to NJSIAA rules, this matter cannot be voted on again until 2014, which means the earliest a statewide playoff system could be approved and implemented would be 2015.
