PHILADELPHIA – The Phillies will try to break their four-game losing streak without first baseman Ryan Howard.
Howard is out with a groin injury and is not in the starting lineup for tonight’s game against the St. Louis Cardinals. The Phillies (6-10) host the Cardinals (9-6) at 7:05 p.m.
Kevin Frandsen will start at first base, Howard is batting .274 with one home run and five RBIs this season. He has look awkward running the bases in recent games.
Tonight’s contest has two other subplots.
Roy Halladay starts for the Phillies. Will he be the Halladay who struggled in spring training and in his first two starts or will he be the Halladay that allowed one run and five hits in his last outing (a 2-1 win over the Miami Marlins)?
And then there is the matter of the Phillies lack of patience at the plate. Philadelphia hitters have not walked in four games. The Phillies haven’t walked since the Miami Marlins walked Domonic Brown intentionally in the eighth inning of Sunday’s game. That was 37 innings ago.
The Phillies last unintentional walk came in the sixth inning of Sunday’s game when John Mayberry Jr. drew a bases on balls.
