Medical esthetician Regina McDonald knows how important looking good is to feeling good.
As a teenager she had acne, and it was a traumatic experience, the Atlantic City resident said.
“For teenagers, acne is detrimental to self esteem,” she said.
Now she helps people of all ages improve skin that has been affected by trauma, disease, aging and surgical procedures, at Eurocolour Salon and Spa in Northfield. Teen boys with acne are a growing part of her clientele.
“It’s always the mothers bringing them in, but they’re OK with it. It’s not a fluffy type of atmosphere,” she said. “One of my nephews is a macho football player in college. When I ask what he wants for Christmas, he always says ‘facials.’”
“I sit with them, and learn if (the problems are exacerbated by) sports,” she said. She talks with them about cleaning routines, nutrition and skin products.
Skin isn’t a vanity shield, she said. It’s the body’s biggest organ. Caring for it properly is more complex than most people realize.
McDonald was among the first to be licensed by New Jersey as a medical esthetician, after the state started the licensing program in 1999. She went to cosmetology school and passed a state exam, she said.
She previously co-owned Euphoria Skin Care & Spa in Linwood, then worked for a plastic surgeon in Galloway Township.
She also volunteers to help women with cancer learn new makeup techniques through the American Cancer Society’s Look Good, Feel Better program.
The first woman she helped was a friend’s mom.
“She said it went a long way in helping her recovery,” McDonald said.
Digestive system lesson
David Boss, a medical doctor and vice president for medical affairs at Southern Ocean Medical Center, spoke to advanced placement biology and anatomy-physiology students at Southern Regional High School last week.
He covered the digestive system and its diseases, and demonstrated an endoscope similar to those he uses to inspect the esophagus and stomach, a school representative said.
Restaurant Gala prizes
Sharing the $7,200 first-place prize in the Atlantic Cape Community College Restaurant Gala 50/50 Raffle this year are Suzanne Feye, of Linwood, Linda Wohlman, of Absecon, and Ruth Latorre, of Atlantic City. Winning second prize of $3,600 was Ken Calemmo, of Sea Isle City; and the third prize of $1,200 went to Tim Pohlman, of Linwood.
