North Wildwood resident William F. Green runs the rehabilitation counseling program at the University of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey in Stratford, Camden County. The profession focuses on counseling people with physical or psychiatric problems, with emphasis on re-entering the work force.
“Rehabilitation counseling was created in response to people coming back from World War I,” Green said. They returned home with bodily injuries, and the emotional injuries then called “shell shock.”
It is excellent for dealing with the needs of today’s returning vets, said Green, 63, president-elect of the American Association of State Counseling Boards. But the federal government has, until recently, wanted to use only social workers. That’s changing, he said, citing new protocols for using licensed counselors.
Green said several service members have gone through his UMDNJ program, and some of his students did their practicum and internship in places such as Fort Dix and McGuire Air Force Base, both in Burlington County.
While heading the AASCB, he plans to work on the issue of license portability, to make it easier for counselors to move from state to state.
Green was formerly in private practice and directed community mental health centers in Camden County. He is president/Ccair of the New Jersey Professional Counselor Examiners Committee, which oversees licensing, reviews courses of study and examines ethical complaints. Recently he received the Dr. Charles Tabler Distinguished Service Award at the New Jersey Counseling Association’s annual conference in Lincroft, Monmouth County.
Leadership award
Richard Artymowicz, director of Pharmacy Services at Cape Regional Medical Center, recently received the Greg Santora Pharmacist of the Year Leadership Award from the New Jersey Society of Health Systems Pharmacists.
Artymowicz, 43, earned his doctorate of pharmacy from the Medical University of South Carolina in 1993. He has been at Cape Regional since 1994. He and his wife, Kathy, live in Upper Township with their two children.
Cancer fundraiser
Lisa Bee, of Longport, started Spin 4 the Cure in 2003, after her husband, Brian, was diagnosed with CLL, a chronic and incurable form of leukemia. Now in its ninth year, it has raised more than $350,000 for the New Jersey chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, funding research, patient financial aid, educational programs and support services.
