Rowan University engineering student Charlotte Cecere, of Buena Vista Township, has helped create computer models of airports for the Federal Aviation Administration for the last three years.

The work was part of her internship with the FAA’s Airport Facility Terminal Integration Laboratories in Egg Harbor Township.

If an airport wants to add a new tower, its staff goes to the lab to see a simulation of how the project would look and function, said Cecere, 22, who graduated in 2009 among the top 10 students in her class at Buena Regional High School.

But her work on early diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease using sound pattern recognition, with Rowan professor Robi Polikar, has convinced her to use her skills to help medicine do a better job.

“It’s a newly emerging field of biomedical engineering, dealing with health and biology,” Cecere said.

She has been working with Polikar to develop a new way to detect early changes in brain function related to Alzheimer’s disease. They test people with cognitive deficits against control subjects, looking for differences in ways people’s brains respond to unexpected sounds.

“I’m still working on the data. There are no conclusive results yet,” she said.

Cecere, who will graduate in May with a degree in electrical and computer engineering and plans to earn her master’s degree in engineering at Rowan, recently won the $1,500 Jerry Kilby Memorial Scholarship from the Professional Engineering Society of Southern New Jersey.

Shore Medical Center honors social worker

Social Worker Stacey DeCore, of Galloway Township, is Shore Medical Center’s March 2013 Employee of the Month.

DeCore is the primary social worker for the maternity, nursery, pediatrics and medical telemetry units, and works with the MOM to MOM support group, which meets weekly at Shore, a spokesperson said in a statement.
