Photographing the Miss America Competition is like shooting a television show. Every event and appearance of the contestants is choreographed for use as a video clip in the production. Still photographers are just along for the ride. Granted, it’s a great ride. For a photographer, what could be better than having 53 attractive subjects in front of them eager to be photographed, many with modeling backgrounds? But being spoon-fed too much eye candy could lead a photographer to be nothing more than a promotional tool for the show. The real challenge is finding those moments, those arresting images that occur during the two-week event that are unexpected.
