Baseball America released its top 10 prospects in the Chicago Cubs organization and Erma resident Matt Szczur came in at third.
Szczur competed in his first full minor league season this year, playing with low Class-A Peoria and Class-A Dayton. He hit a combined .293 with 10 home runs, 46 RBI, 24 stolen bases (in 29 chances) with 75 runs scored in 109 games.
Baseball America also slated him as the Fastest Baserunner and Best Athlete in the organization. However, the article does note that Szczur is "at least a couple of years away" from playing in the Majors.
Because of his a great success on and off the football field - a standout athlete at Villanova and he donated his bone marrow to a little girl with cancer - Lower Cape May Regional High School plans on retiring Szczur's football and baseball jerseys near the end of the year, his former high school football coach Lance Bailey said.
An official announcement will come at the traditional Thanksgiving football game against Middle Township. The ceremony with a potential video tribute is planned for Dec. 21 at a girls basketball game against Oakcrest.
