Watkins, of Middle Township, served in World War II as a driver dispatcher in the 317th Combat Engineers Battalion, part of the 92nd Infantry Division. ‘The Lord brought me back,’ he says of his time in Italy. ‘But there were times when I wasn’t sure if I was going to make it back.’
