Acme supermarket and a union that represents its cashiers and clerks in southern New Jersey have made progress in their contract talks, avoiding a walk out by workers for now.

The supermarket and the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 1360 released a joint statement Monday that said they have moved forward on key issues.

"Although we have not reached a final agreement, both sides are committed to reaching a fair and reasonable settlement," the statement said.

The Berlin Township, Camden County-based union has threatened to strike before Thanksgiving if a contract cannot be worked out. Its five-year contract had expired in April.

Local 1360 President Sam Ferraino has said the union is concerned about health care benefits and salaries.

The union represents about 2,400 workers at Acmes in Cumberland, Burlington, Salem, Camden, Gloucester and Mercer counties in New Jersey and lower Bucks County, Pa. In Cumberland County, the cashiers and clerks at the store in Bridgeton are affected.
