More New Jersey residents are taking advantage of filing their federal income tax statements electronically.

The Internal Revenue Service said Tuesday that a record 2.78 million statements were filed this year, up almost 8 percent from the 2.58 million in 2008.

In total, about 65 percent of New Jersey residents e-filed their returns.

The number of Americans e-filing also is up: 95 million federal income tax returns were sent through the computer this year, up from 90 million last year.

Many people have the opportunity to file their federal statements for free. Aside from the financial benefits, the IRS says, any refunds are given much faster because they can be direct deposited into the taxpayer's bank account.
