Wallena Gould, a certified registered nurse anesthetist at South Jersey Healthcare System in Vineland, was honored Monday by Los Angeles-based Cherokee Uniforms with one of its six annual awards for health-care professionals nationwide.
Gould was given the Top National Award for Advanced Practice Nurses for her work helping minorities become nurse anesthetists. She began by mentoring fellow students at La Salle University and other other universities, and then in 2008 launched the nonprofit Diversity in Nurse Anesthesia Mentorship Program to assist underprivileged minority students, the awards panel said.
Gould has mentored 2,000 nurse anesthetist candidates, resulting in about 80 minority registered nurses joining the profession since 2003, it said.
