ATLANTIC CITY - Casinos shed more than 500 jobs last month in the latest round of payroll cuts heading into the slower fall and winter months.
Newly released figures by the New Jersey Casino Control Commission show that all 11 casino hotels cut back in October to reduce the industry's total work force to 36,812 - 3,312 fewer employees than the same time last year.
Casinos usually trim their work force in the fall, when business begins to taper off after Labor Day. The soft economy and extra competition from slot parlors in surrounding states have put additional pressure on them in the past year to cut even deeper to reduce expenses.
Figures show that 525 jobs were cut industrywide in October, about half the number lost in September. About 950 jobs were chopped in October 2008, but the casino work force stood at 40,124 at that time, 8.2 percent larger than the current figure.
Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa cut 175 jobs last month to lead the industry. Most of the other casinos made only small reductions in their work force.
