Customers of New Jersey American Water billed on a quarterly basis can expect to get billed monthly beginning in July.
The water utility said Friday that about 40 percent of its 640,000 customers will be affected.
In southern New Jersey, the utility serves the Atlantic County municipalities of Absecon, Egg Harbor Township, Galloway Township, Linwood, Northfield, Pleasantville and Somers Point, and the Cape May County municipalities of Ocean City and Upper Township, as well as part of Middle Township.
New Jersey American Water said the benefit to customers will be that they can monitor their water usage each month and better identify potential leaks.
"Monthly billing gives our customers the option to be more efficient with their water usage and in their household budgets," said John Bigelow, president of the Cherry Hill-based utility.
The company also has automatic billing available each month for free.
