President Barack Obama signed legislation today that extends unemployment benefits up to 20 additional weeks for unemployed workers in states including New Jersey.

The state Labor Department said today that 65,000 New Jersey residents will have new claims automatically filed so that they can continue receiving unemployment benefits.

Any eligible recipients do not need to contact the Labor Department. The state will mail letters to them Monday regarding their claims and the benefits will become available for the weeks ending Nov. 14 and 21 at the end of the month.

New Jersey's unemployed workers can now collect up to a maximum of 99 weeks of state- or federally-funded unemployment benefits - assuming they've never found a new job since filing for unemployment and are still job hunting.

Unemployment call center hours are from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to noon Saturday and Sunday. The number in southern New Jersey is 856-507-2340. Claims also can be filed to www.njuifile.net.
