Gift cards are expected to be the No. 1 gift this holiday season for the sixth year in a row, but Bankrate.com says consumers need to watch out. For instance:

•Not every retailer allows you to use your gift card for online purchases, including as CVS, T.J. Maxx and Marshall's.

•Many retailers do offer free shipping. For a list, visit www.bankrate.com/finance/credit-cards/2009-gift-card-study-results.aspx.

•Under the Credit Card Accountability, Responsibility and Disclosure (CARD) Act starting in Feb. 2010, gift cards cannot expire in less than five years.

•Credit card companies that offer gift cards impose fees on the cards if you don't use the card within the first 12 months. A $2.50 monthly maintenance fee can be imposed.
