Southern New Jersey companies reported a smaller decline in business activity in the third quarter, and expressed more optimism about conditions six months from now, the South Jersey Business Survey said Wednesday.
But firms that shed employees during the quarter, 31 percent, outnumbered the 8 percent who added jobs. And 23 percent of businesses expected to have fewer workers in six months, compared to 17 percent who expect to hire.
Optimism prevailed regarding sales, with 30 percent of firms surveyed by the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia expecting an increase into next year and 20 percent expecting a sales decline.
