Dick's Sporting Goods will officially open its new store in Vineland's Cumberland Mall Oct. 8, a spokesman said Thursday.

The new Dick's is roughly a mile north of the chain's current location in Millville's Union Lake Crossing shopping center. The Millville store is scheduled to stay in business until the new mall store opens.

Dick's is moving into the Cumberland Mall space vacated last year by JCPenney, as part of a nationwide cutback by that department store chain. The Pittsburgh-based Dick's announced just before Christmas last year that its Cumberland County location would make that short move up Delsea Drive to Vineland.

The Dick's store is in a new building at the mall, but it's about 50,000 square feet, roughly the same size as the Penney's store it replaced, a Cumberland Mall spokeswoman said.

Dick's opening weekend in Vineland, which coincides with the Columbus Day holiday, will include giveaway promotions both Saturday and Sunday mornings, the chain announced. The first 100 people to show up Saturday will get Adidas "go-to performance T-shirts." On Sunday, the first 100 people in line will be given Dick's-brand "stadium bags."

Managers also plan several additions to the relocated Dick's, an expanded women's "studio apparel" department plus a soccer shop, a lacrosse shop and a baseball shop. The store will also upgrade its shoe section, officials said.

“The opening of our newest Dick's Sporting Goods in Vineland will enable us to serve athletes, sports fans and outdoor enthusiasts in the community at an even higher level,” Lauren Hobart, Dick's executive vice president, said in a statement announcing the opening schedule.

Dick's has another local store in the Consumer Square center in Mays Landing.
