Business: Art House
Location: 182 N. Main St., Manahawkin
Owner: Samantha Palmeri, of Stafford Township
Art House covers several aspects of the business. One is a fine-art gallery, in which we show contemporary fine art from local and national artists.
The other aspect is we are an art school, so we teach classes to children and adults. The art school focuses on basic fundamental art training in drawing and painting.
We also have a gift shop that features unique, hand-made products. We sell fair-trade products, and we also sell crafts and artworks from local artists, like ceramics and glassware.
We also have a coffee lounge, where we host regular monthly events for local artists, musicians and poets.
At this point, we are the only ones in this area who are offering the variety of things that we offer.
The name is the Art House because we’re in a Victorian house, and all the rooms upstairs and downstairs are utilized for art. We have a core group of artists that participate in our events, and we’re trying to get the word out to other artist in the area.
Entry: I’ve been in the business of art my whole adult life. I’m an artist myself, and I owned an art gallery way back when I was living in New York.
I also worked for art galleries, and I taught art. This business is really an accumulation of everything I’ve done so far.
The future: We change the exhibits every month or two.
We’re hoping to really showcase real fine, contemporary art to the local public. It’s something that is lacking in the area, so we’re trying to fill that niche.
We have a lot of activities and we’re going to be working on a lecture series in the fall, and we do workshops here and there.
We’re trying to incorporate activities people feel welcome and comfortable coming to.
