Business: Action Uniform Co.
Location: 3164 Fire Road, Egg Harbor Township
Owner: Rick Zelig, of Linwood
Speaking for business: Holli Nixon, Mays Landing, 37, director of marketing
Products, services: We do uniforms for police, fire, schools, EMS, transportation, hospitality, restaurant wear and athletic teams. We offer all the customization that goes with that - embroidery, silkscreening, vinyl lettering and engraving. All of those services are done on the premises, while you wait, which is unusual. We do a lot of nurses uniforms and corrections uniforms - and baseball teams this time of year.
Our slogan is same day signature service. Rick (Zelig) designed the store so there's a department for each of those customizations. So, when you buy a uniform, whatever you need to have customized can be done while you wait.
Market, advantages: What's unique about our group is we have a combined 74 years in the uniform industry. I have been doing this since I was 16. When the economy hit so hard in 2010, we saw an extreme withdrawal from uniform purchases, especially among municipalities. Obviously, the uniform is the first to go.
We offer a value in a combination uniform. For law enforcement or corrections or fire departments, it's taking a dress uniform and a utility uniform and combining them into something that's affordable and functional. We see the market improving, and it's encouraging.
Entry: Rick Zelig was formerly a partner at This & That Uniforms in Pleasantville. We opened this location Jan. 11, and he's no longer affiliated with that business. All 12 of the staff here are originally from This & That Uniforms.
The future: I believe it's hard work and knowledge. I don't believe anyone can jump into this industry, or any industry, without experience.
I see the future improving. New Jersey has been through more than most states. I believe our uniformed professionals are going to do better than they have for the past five years. As they do well, we do well.
