Business: Baumgardner House Lifting
Location: 2628 Fire Road, Egg Harbor Township
Owner: Andrew Baumgardner, 20, of Longport
Baumgardner House Lifting provides house-lifting services and associated construction.
After Hurricane Sandy, FEMA produced new rate maps for flood insurance, which will dictate your future flood insurance costs.
Basically, if you're below the set level on the new maps, you're going to see an increase on your flood insurance the next three years, and it's going to annually increase by at least 15 percent.
What we can do is lift your house to or above that new base flood elevation to reduce your flood insurance costs and fight the annual increase in costs.
I have an operator on staff who has been lifting houses for more than 35 years to mitigate future flooding. I also have someone on staff who is expert in the hazard mitigation grant programs.
Both have been working in Louisiana since Hurricane Katrina and have years of experience dealing with federal grants.
After homeowners call, we walk them through the insurance and grant process. After they find out where the funding is coming from, we can then provide them with the full house-lifting service.
We have all brand-new equipment for lifting houses, a unified hydraulic jacking system that raises the house all at once and completely level.
We can also take care of any interior or exterior work involved.
Entry: I left college to start the company. I walked away from a full scholarship in football at James Madison University. I contacted one of the best house lifters in the nation, John Matyiko III, who has been a key element in my company's success. He was part of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse relocation.
I've worked for my father my whole life at Baumgardner Construction, which has done large renovations and new construction in Atlantic City and South Jersey for the past 40 years.
The future: We're looking to expand our crews due to the amount of demand for house lifting. We're serving the entire state. We're certified by the state Department of Community Affairs to work under the Reconstruction, Rehabilitation, Elevation and Mitigation Program.
