The Cape May County Chamber of Commerce will help businesses prepare for one of the most feared experiences — a tax audit.
On June 7, certified public accountant Thomas J. Fitzpatrick will present a free seminar, “How to Prepare for and Survive an Audit.”
The morning program will be held in the FBK Conference Center in Marmora, Upper Township, of Fitzpatrick, Bongiovanni & Kelly.
The IRS and state taxing authorities have become more aggressive with their audit process and more sophisticated in their selection, said the agency, which provides business consulting, tax and accounting services, and financial planning.
Audits have become an area of interest for taxing authorities due to the potential uncollected tax revenue. Therefore, the IRS and state authorities have invested heavily in new field agents in information technology to conduct better sales. The seminar will cover:
n The need to have organized records that the taxing authorities can rely upon.
n Being aware of industry averages to challenge some of the auditors’ assumptions.
n Current guidelines for audits.
n What steps you should take if you have been selected for an audit.
Following the audit seminar, another accountant from Fitzpatrick, Bongiovanni & Kelly — Robert L. Ellis — will present a program on the use of QuickBooks, the widely used bookkeeping software from Intuit.
Ellis, a certified QuickBooks Pro adviser, will cover the need for QuickBooks for any small business, its ease of use and applications, and how to get further training to improve business.
Many clients of accounting firms now record their financial information using QuickBooks or other financial software, freeing accountants to provide higher level services — beginning with helping them set up their bookkeeping software.
Fitzpatrick, Bongiovanni & Kelly has more than 20 years experience and also has a full-service office in Linwood Commons.
