Business organizations in Cumberland County are encouraging area residents to do some holiday shopping at local businesses in conjunction with city Christmas parades.

The Greater Millville Chamber of Commerce is holding this year’s Christmas Parade on Nov. 23, starting at 7 p.m. at High Street and Harrison Avenue, and proceeding south on High Street to City Hall.

The chamber said the theme this year will be “Angels on High” — envisioning decorations with angels and white lights and fluffy clouds. Bells might be popular on floats, too, playing on the notion from the film “It’s a Wonderful Life” in which Jimmy Stewart says, “Every time a bell rings an angel gets its wings.”

High Street north of Harrison Avenue will be closed at 5 p.m. on Nov. 23 to allow for the staging of the parade.

The Millville chamber does not charge to enter the parade and depends on donations and the support of area businesses for sponsorships to cover the expenses.

Over in Vineland, the Main Street Vineland 2012 Holiday Parade on Landis Avenue will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Nov. 24 (rain date Nov. 25).

The theme of this year’s parade is “Sounds of the Holidays.”

The Vineland Chamber of Commerce has designated Nov. 24 “Small Business Saturday,” and is encouraging people to support the small businesses in Vineland by shopping locally.
