Business: Impact Fitness and Martial Arts
Owners: Dan, 42, and Tara Dixon, of Millville
Location: 207 Bogden Blvd., Suite F, Millville
We are a small gym that revolves around group classes. We have classes in Brazilian jujitsu, mixed martial arts and women’s fitness, and we do private one-on-one personal training.
I am the only black belt in Brazilian jujitsu currently teaching in Cumberland County. Tara and I are both certified personal trainers. Personal training is done in a private setting in the morning. Many people don’t feel comfortable training in a gym setting with a lot of people around.
We deal with people primarily who want to lose weight, but we also help people get into better shape or sports conditioning. I’ve trained quite a few guys who are going away to college or the military.
At night, we have all of our classes, which range from 10 to 15 people, with up to 20 in the women’s fitness.
Brazilian jujitsu is a grappling martial art, grabbing opponents and dragging them to the ground, and using submission holds to subdue them.
Mixed martial arts is what you see on TV when the guys are fighting in a cage, a mixture of jiu-jitsu, wrestling, boxing, kickboxing, all used at once.
We train amateur and professional cage fighters, and they compete in MMA events. Atlantic City has lots of events, and you can find something there almost every weekend. We compete all over, including in Philadelphia and North Jersey.
Our mat area is 65 feet by 30 feet, and we have a fitness center that is for women only. We might do circuits one day, a fitness game the next, or aerobics.
Entry: I went to college for health and physical education. I started doing martial arts in 2001, and they all came together when I decided to open the business instead of selling plants to garden centers throughout the state.
Future plans: We’re looking to expand to a second location, possibly in the Glassboro area. It would be a small, satellite location for adult jujitsu.
