Joann Zerbo and her husband, Charles, were preparing to leave Tropicana Casino and Resort on Thursday afternoon when an employee approached them with an unusual request: Would they mind having their blood pressure taken?
Joann consented, even though Charles was anxious to hit the road back to their Lindenhurst, N.Y., home.
“He is rushing to check out. He’s going to have a coronary,” Joann joked.
Hoping to keep the Zerbos and other customers healthy, Tropicana will call in the medical and fitness experts today as the casino takes part in National Wear Red Day, an annual event promoting awareness of heart disease, particularly among women.
The casino will offer free blood-pressure tests and other health screenings by AtlantiCare, an Atlantic County-based health care provider. Tilton Fitness, a local fitness group, will provide free body-fat testing and health consultations. There will also be pushup and situp contests and a Zumba class.
Steve Callender, Tropicana general manager, acknowledged it was unusual for a casino to be the setting for health screenings. But, he said, Tropicana would benefit from having healthier employees and customers.
Sam Young, president and CEO of Tilton Fitness, noted that Atlantic City’s casinos have memberships for their employees at his fitness business. He said the fitness screenings will allow Tropicana to extend a healthy lifestyle to its customers.
“It’s not very often that we do this with casino customers,” Young said. “I think this is an excellent opportunity for us, for AtlantiCare and for Tropicana, to expose customers to different ways of thinking for health and fitness.”
Joann Zerbo, 64, seemed surprised when a Tropicana employee asked to take her blood pressure, but she didn’t object. Her 66-year-old husband poked fun at her: “Make sure you take a deep breath.”
Her blood pressure wasn’t divulged, but Joann said she may be one of the customers Tropicana doesn’t have to worry about.
“There’s no problem. It’s usually good,” she said of her blood pressure.
