From a former ambassador and Congressman to a former casino executive who once was a housekeeper, from a karate instructor to a former leader of the NAACP, members of the southern New Jersey community share their thoughts about the nomination of Barack Obama for president.

Burgess "Butch" Hamer, karate instructor and member of the Middle Township Board of Education: "It's overwhelming. For a minority person like myself, it's uplifting and encourages me to consider running for office. You say to yourself, 'I can make it if he can make it.' The dream comes true."

Gail Jasper, daugher of John R. Jasper, Atlantic City’s first black fire chief: “I’m just so excited about it, I’m speechless. I knew it was going to happen but didn’t know when. I’m very, very proud. It’s not just wonderful for the African-American community but for America as a whole to have Barack Obama, a person who represents change.’

Pleasantville City Councilman Lincoln Green: “To tell you the truth, I didn’t think I’d see this come to fruition like it is now in my lifetime. What it shows you is that the American people can come together and look beyond the color of a man’s skin. ... I’m pretty sure the people in America are ready for this change.
