The section of Linwood between Shore Road and Scull Bay is one of the most desirable neighborhoods in southern New Jersey. It's a family friendly neighborhood of quiet, tree-lined streets and upscale homes on large lots and includes what locals refer to as the Gold Coast.

Alex and Elyse Axelrod and their two young children landed in Linwood 14 years ago when Alex, a physician, took a job as a trauma surgeon at what was then Atlantic City Medical Center. Their house hunting travels led them to a vacant half-acre property on a secluded cul-de-sac on the edge of the meadows.

"We fell in love with the street, the cul-de-sac, the view." Elyse recalls. "You can see across the bay from Atlantic City all the way to Ocean City."

The couple hired prominent Linwood architect Todd Miller of QMA to design the all-stucco Mediterranean style home which features 5 bedrooms, 5 ½ baths, a 3-car side-entry garage and more than 5,000 square feet of luxurious living space.

"The architect put a lot of windows in the back of the house to take advantage of the views," Elyse says.

The house sits well back from the private Hollycroft Lane on a richly landscaped circular driveway. The huge entry foyer has a granite tile floor and a gracefully curved natural oak staircase. Decorative columns set the foyer off from the family room, dining room and a living room currently furnished with a grand piano. The family room is a full two stories high and has hardwood floors and a double bank of windows that look out over the meadows and bay.

The enormous kitchen has granite counters, a ceramic tile floor, stainless SubZero refrigerator, Thermador double oven and a five burner cooktop built into a massive center island. A large breakfast area at one end of the kitchen is set into a bayed window with a glorious view of the meadows. There's also a butler's pantry and access to a fiberglass deck with a stairway down to the patio.&rtab;

"In the summer you can see the Atlantic City and the Ferris wheel in Ocean City all lit up at night," Elyse says. "On July 4 we can watch the fireworks from the deck."

The first floor also has a bedroom with a private full bath and a large office. A second staircase off the kitchen provides access to the second floor as well as to a mudroom, laundry room, and the basement.

Four bedrooms and three full bathrooms, one of which has a corner Jacuzzi tub, are found on the second floor. The master suite has a marble-tiled bath with a large walk-in steam shower and another Jacuzzi.

The finished walkout basement has a feature few basements can boast: a magnificent view. That view, which encompasses the meadows and bay can be enjoyed through a bayed window as well as a separate sunroom. There's also a full bath and a lounge area. A large unfinished section of the basement has three sets of French doors that open to the patio.

Even after 14 years, the house is immaculate. "We took good care of it," Elyse says. "It helped that both of our kids are neat and that, growing up, all their friends were polite. They took their shoes off and were really well mannered."

The kids are grown now and away in college and graduate school. So the Axelrods are empty nesters if you don't count their faithful dog, Chip, a Labradoodle from Australia currently recovering from ACL surgery. But that's not why they're selling the house. Alex has accepted a job in New York as director of trauma and critical care at a teaching hospital.

"So we're moving to Long Island," Elyse says.
