Legend has it a young Abe Lincoln had to walk nine miles to school. That's almost nine miles farther than Michael Zambanini had to walk to his elementary school
"It only took him a couple of minutes to get to school," says Michael's mom, Sharling. "It's not even two blocks away from our house."
The house Sharling purchased in 1994 is located in the Heritage Woods section of Smithville in Galloway Township. Unlike Smithville's age restricted communities, kids are welcome at Heritage Woods. And those kids attend grades K-6 at Smithville School on Old Port Republic Road.
In addition to its proximity to the school, the location of the house has other advantages.
"It's a nice safe neighborhood and the neighbors are really nice," Sharling says. "We're also only three blocks from the clubhouse, where there's a gym, tennis courts, basketball courts and a swimming pool." Use of the clubhouse facilities, as well as trash pickup and snow removal, are included in the $47 a month association fee.
Sharling's house is one of only 10 houses on Arlington Lane, a semicircular street off Constitution Drive. All the homes are on the same side of the street. The other side of the street is a buffer of trees. Michael was about 11 years old when Sharling relocated to Galloway from Las Vegas, where she worked as a casino dealer. The house in Smithville is about a 15-minute drive from her job at the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City.
Built in 1991, the two-story vinyl-sided house occupies a nicely landscaped lot with a spacious back yard and has three bedrooms and 2 1/2 baths. The first floor has cathedral ceilings and features an eat-in kitchen with breakfast nook, living and dining rooms, a family room and a half bath. Three bedrooms and a large loft that could be a fourth bedroom or a den are located on the second floor. The master suite has a walk-in closet and a private bath.
Outside, a rear deck overlooks the back yard and a two-car attached garage is entered from a blacktop driveway.
Sharling has made a series of improvement to the house, most of them in the past couple of years.
"I put in new windows, a new roof, new air conditioning system and new laminate hardwood floors," she says. "And I put in the granite kitchen counters and new sink about five months ago."
The house has a storage attic, natural gas heat, a gas water heater and public water and sewer.
Sharling, a native of Taiwan who worked for many years at Harrah's in Atlantic City and currently is a dealer at Trump Taj Mahal, plans to move to Maryland when she sells the house.
"I'll still be working at a casino," she says. "I've been in the casino business for over 30 years."
An open house at this property, which is listed for $233,000, will be held Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 23-24, from noon to 2 p.m. For more information call Beverly Fineran of Prudential Diversified Real Estate, 609-335-1611.
