It sounded like a plan. When their kids were grown, Marc and Jeri Hurvitz would sell their home in Linwood and buy a place at the beach.
Well, the kids grew up. But Marc and Jeri didn't sell the 5-bedroom. 3½-bath home where they had lived since 1985.
"We had always wanted to move to the beach," Jeri recalls. "But we looked for 10 years for a place on the island and couldn't find what we wanted. So we decided to stay in Linwood and redo the house. We were going to live there for the rest of our lives."
Before moving to Linwood Marc, an attorney, and Jeri, then an assistant buyer for Spencer Gifts, lived in Egg Harbor Township.
The new house they bought in Linwood as a young couple had a great location on East Royal Avenue near the end of a cul-de-sac that extends into the meadowlands.
In 1988, after their two children had arrived, they built an addition that included a second-floor master suite, a playroom and a Florida room. Four years ago, with their son and daughter in college, they embarked on a major renovation project.
"We put on a new roof, remodeled the kitchen and bathrooms, replaced the windows and installed hardwood floors in the great room," Jeri says. They also built a new multi-level composite deck and redid the exterior with Cedar Impressions vinyl siding.
"We wanted it to be totally maintenance free." Jeri says.
A concrete driveway leads from the street to a side-entry two-car garage. The front door, sheltered by long covered front porch, opens into a two-story foyer with a ceramic tile floor that runs through the kitchen. The remodeled powder room has a granite topped vanity.
The sunroom, originally a screened-in porch, has access to the deck, which is equipped with built-in benches and flower boxes. The deck can also be entered from the two-story great room which features a cherry floor and a wood-burning fireplace.
The new kitchen has granite counters, cherry cabinets, 18-inch-square ceramic tile floors and glass doors to the deck.
Appliances include a Dacor refrigerator and oven and a Miele dishwasher.
"It took me a good six months to find the fixtures and the matching handles on the refrigerator," Jeri says.
A formal dining room has oak floors with mahogany inlays and opens into a formal living room. A first-floor laundry room has a door to the side yard. In the garage, a pull-down ladder leads to a storage area.
All five bedrooms and three full baths are located on the second floor. The original master bedroom has a walk-in closet and a private bath. The hall bathroom was remodeled. A walk-in storage attic is entered through a guest bedroom.
The master suite addition has his and hers walk-in closets with built-in drawers and shelves. Glass doors open to a private balcony that overlooks the meadows. The lavish master bath has a travertine tile floor, double sink, a tiled walk-in shower and a whirlpool tub.
Other amenities include a sprinkler system, an alarm system and a high-tech sound system with speakers in the great room, kitchen and deck. There is no basement.
Outside, a back yard landscaped with mature trees and shrubs borders a swathe of meadowlands that lead out to Scull Bay.
"We get water views when it's high tide or a full moon," Jeri says. "It's so peaceful. It's like you're on vacation seven days a week."
Just four years after renovating their house, Marc and Jeri changed course again. Maybe it was fate.
"We were riding our bikes on the beach in Longport and saw a sign for an open house," Jeri says. "We found a house we loved and said 'Maybe it's time to go to the beach.' It's a couple of blocks from the beach but close enough so we don't have to drive."
The new house is smaller than the house in Linwood. But Jeri says there's enough room to accommodate their children, Leslie, 26, and Jason, 24. Both of them live in New York but like to visit, especially during the summer.
As might be expected, Marc and Jeri have some misgivings.
"We love Linwood," say Jeri, who worked for Spencer Gifts for 25 years and became vice president of merchandising. "The schools are fabulous and it was a great place to bring up a family. We have a lot of good memories. My husband was a soccer coach and every Saturday and Sunday we were on a soccer field."
