The Nerds perform at Joe Pop's Shore Bar & Restaurant

1 Joe Pop's Shore Bar & Restaurant has been a nightlife fixture on Long Beach Island for decades, its liquor license dating back to the 1930s and its stage a platform for both nationally known acts and regionally renowned cover bands. Its latest edition came to life in 2005 when new owners Anthony and Danielle Pessolano first reopened the doors after a brief closure, retaining the name locals and visitors have learned to love.

2 Joe Pop's has always been best known for its live music, and that remains true today. Bands such as The Nerds and The Benjamins - who play a mix of rock, funk, pop and general party tunes - are crowd favorites. In fact, general manager Andrew Martino says Wednesdays and Sundays, when each normally plays, tend to be the most crowded nights of the week. The bar also has acoustic acts on its outdoor area, Tiki Joe's, which debuted in 2010.

3 During the summer months, the bar goes for a three-month binge of wild parties with more specials and fun gimmicks than most places try to imagine. On Tuesdays, College Nights, they have 80-ounce beer towers for $10, as well as beer pong and flip cup games. On Fridays, a Drink Wheel's spinning arrow selects a new $5 drink every hour, making the next hourly special anything from $5 Jagermeister bombs to $5 Long Island Iced Teas. And Sundays are Ladies & Locals nights, when females and anyone from southern Ocean County gets free admission and exclusive drink specials.

4 The party doesn't stop after Labor Day, or wait until Memorial Day, to begin. In the shoulder seasons of May, September and October, the bar is only open on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Friday nights offer $3 draft beers and $4 well drinks. Coors Light bottles are $3 on Saturdays, well drinks are $4 while and certain shots are only $2. Happy Hour continues all day Sunday, with 50-cent wings during NFL games.

5 This year the bar ends its season on the best adult holiday of the year - Halloween - with a costume contest in categories including sexiest and most creative. It's also ringing in the New Year with an open bar, midnight champagne toast and early morning continental breakfast. Tickets for NYE go on sale Nov. 1, starting at $60, and get pricier the longer you wait.

The Scene

Heard on a recent Saturday night: All the latest party hits, from "I Wanna Go" by Britney Spears to "Pumped Up Kicks" by Foster the People, as well as tracks from the '70s, '80s and '90s

Scene at midnight: A mostly young crowd, interspersed with groups in their 40s and 50s, shouts, waves their arms and altogether dances shamelessly as they're packed shoulder to shoulder. In between band sets, the crowd cheers louder with each song the DJ plays. Then the band returns, all eyes turn and most people head toward the stage, where they stay to jump and rock in sync with the band's every chord.
