ACA plans open houses

The Academy of Culinary Arts at Atlantic Cape Community College will host several open houses this fall for prospective students who love to cook and are interested in starting a career in the culinary field.

The open houses are planned for 1 p.m. Oct. 6, 9 a.m. Oct. 25, 6 p.m. Nov. 20 and 9 a.m. Dec. 6 at the Mays Landing Campus, 5100 Black Horse Pike, M-Building. The academy offers two-year degree programs in culinary arts, baking and pastry, and food service management, and specialization programs in hot foods, baking and pastry, food service management and catering. ACA students have opportunities to gain hands-on experience throughout the year. Full-time classes meet five hours a day, Monday-Friday, in morning, afternoon or evening sessions. Vegan Fall Celebration Dinner set

The public is invited to a Fall Celebration Dinner hosted by the American Vegan Society.

The event is scheduled for 6:30 p.m Sept. 23 and 24 at Careme’s Gourmet Restaurant, at the Academy of Culinary Arts at Atlantic Cape Community College in Mays Landing. Jazz Society announces new CD

The Somers Point Jazz Society has announced the creation of its first jazz compilation CD to highlight the talent of the artist members of the society.

The finished 17-track (80 minute) CD will be a blend of different styles of jazz and will feature artists including Michael Pedicin, Gina Roche, Paul Jost, Edgardo Cintron, Cathy Rocco, Ed Vezinho and more. The CD will help the Somers Point Jazz Society continue to bring jazz artists and jazz education programs to Somers Point and the surrounding communities. The society will use the finished CD as a promotional item to attract new members and new sponsors. The CD also will assist the jazz society in obtaining grants and additional funding to support its year-round calendar of performances.

LIBT presents ARMC with $35,000

Members of the Ladies Invitational Bluefish Tournament recently presented a $35,000 check to representatives of the AtlantiCare Cancer Care Institute, a Fox Chase Cancer Center Partner at St. George’s Pub in Brigantine.

Twenty-eight boats with 128 anglers participated in the 29th annual tournament in June. Competing boats left from Atlantic City, Longport and Cape May to pursue bluefish in southern New Jersey waters. Funds raised through the event support AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center’s Mammography Assistance Fund. The fund covers breast cancer screenings for uninsured and underinsured women — including on the AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center Ruth Newman Shapiro Mobile Digital Mammography Van. 4-H to hold Fall Festival

The Atlantic County 4-H Youth Development Program and Atlantic County 4-H Fair and Leaders’ Associations will hold a Fall Festival from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 28 at the David C. Wood 4-H Center 4-H Fairgrounds, 3210 Route 50, South Egg Harbor.

The purpose is to highlight the 4-H program to recruit new youth members and adult volunteers, and share program offerings and opportunities with families and the community. There is a variety of things to see, do, and enjoy for kids and families. Activities include pumpkin painting, scarecrow making, kids’ crafts and games, club displays and demonstrations, a pie eating contest, vendors, food, inflatables, and a car show. Literacy Volunteers to honor Goldsmith

Literacy Volunteers of New Jersey and Literacy Volunteers of Union County will honor Henry Goldsmith, of Mays Landing, retired president of Literacy Volunteers of New Jersey, when the two groups celebrate “Improving Lives through Literacy” at a joint gala fundraiser Nov. 13 at Shackamaxon Country Club in Scotch Plains.

Goldsmith will receive the Harry Van Houten Lifetime Achievement Award for his long-term commitment and services. Special guest will be Grammy award-winning singer/songwriter and author Rosanne Cash. Panel set on military sexual trauma

The Office of Continuing Studies and the Office of Veteran Affairs at Richard Stockton College in Galloway Township are hosting a viewing of “The Invisible War,” followed by a panel discussion, 4:30 p.m. Nov. 6, in the Campus Center Event Room, main campus, Jimmie Leeds Road, Galloway Township. Members of the veteran community will partner with health and human services professionals to examine military sexual trauma, or MTS. MTS is the term used by the Department of Veteran Affairs to refer to experiences of sexual assault or repeated, threatening acts of sexual harassment, as experienced by both men and women.

‘Boardwalk Empire’ author to speak

Hammonton resident and historian Nelson Johnson will discuss his book “Boardwalk Empire: The Birth, High Times, and Corruption of Atlantic City” at 6 p.m. Sept. 19 at Richard Stockton College’s Kramer Hall, 30 Front St., Hammonton.

Careme’s opens for dinner

VA mobile clinic to visit Stockton

The Wilmington VA Medical Center’s Mobile Outreach Clinic will be available on the Richard Stockton College campus in Galloway Township on a monthly basis during the academic year. Their first monthly visit will be from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Oct. 22 . The mobile unit will be parked on the D-F Plaza.

The mobile units will offer the following services to veterans:

Primary care services, including history and physicals, management of acute and chronic illnesses, women’s health, and patient education

Ancillary services: Immunizations (including flu and pneumonia vaccines), lab services (including blood draws, urine specimens, etc.)

Social Worker available for assistance with eligibility/enrollment, mental health referrals, and identification of resources available to veterans.

JFS and ACME to hold food drive

Jewish Family Service of Atlantic and Cape May Counties announces a partnership with ACME Markets to help eliminate hunger in the community. JFS will hold a food drive from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 4 at the ACME in Somers Point to assist in restocking the agency food pantry for Thanksgiving and the holiday season.

For this collection, JFS asks shoppers to pick up an extra item or two during their shopping trip. Top essentials include stuffing, instant potatoes, rice, cranberry sauce, and canned vegetables Also non-perishable, kid-friendly food such as pasta and sauce, cereal and peanut butter are perfect offerings needed throughout the year. Donations should be unopened and properly sealed. Food must meet the expiration and “use by” dates in order to be distributed to the community. JFS is looking for volunteers to help with the ACME Food Drive on Oct. 4. Volunteers are needed to welcome shoppers, ask for donations and collect food for the JFS Pantry. Two-hour shifts are available from 10 a.m. to noon, noon to 2 p.m., and 2 to 4 p.m. Volunteers are needed at JFS from 2 to 5 p.m. to stock donated items. In addition to hosting the food drive, ACME Markets donated $500 to help JFS get a jump start on re-stocking the everyday essentials of the food pantry.

Church publishes cookbook

“Seasoned with Love,” a new cookbook by St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church in Absecon, is available for purchase for $10 per copy. Parishioners, families, and friends share 500 recipes in eight categories in this illustrated and professionally printed cookbook.

Each recipe features the contributor’s name and an alphabetical contributor index makes it easy for everyone to locate the favorite recipes of their friends and neighbors. Many pages of helpful cooking hints are also included.

African American Heritage Museum expands

The African American Heritage Museum of Southern New Jersey will open in the Noyes Museum Arts Garage Stockton College in Atlantic City this fall, part of the resort’s developing Arts District.

The African American Heritage Museum, founded by Ralph Hunter Sr., will occupy 2,000 square feet of the Arts Retail space located on the first floor of The Wave parking garage along Mississippi Avenue. The museum brings to life the African American experience of the 20th century as it documents the struggle of one group of Americans to carve their own place in the wider cultural landscape. The Noyes Museum of Stockton, which manages the site leased by the college, will have a 900-square-foot exhibition space of primarily New Jersey artists’ work and a 550-square-foot gift shop selling the work of local artists and crafts people. The African American Heritage Museum has access to more than 11,000 items such as graphics, drawings, paintings, advertisements, household and decorative items, all depicting blacks in a historical context. The museum will retain a smaller presence in its original location in Newtonville, in western Atlantic County, Hunter said.

Coach Bingo fundraiser set

The Community Partnership for Egg Harbor Township Schools Inc. and the H. Russell Swift Elementary School Parents Club will co-host a Ladies Coach Bingo event at 6 p.m. Nov. 15 at Somers Point VFW Post 2189, 500 Bethel Road.

Dougherty named Atlantic County Teacher of the Year

Terry Dougherty, a third-grade teacher at Roland Rogers Elementary School in Galloway Township and a graduate of Richard Stockton College, was named Atlantic County Teacher of the Year by Gov. Chris Christie’s administration.

Dougherty, who was the winner of the 2011 Great American Teach-Off, established a free military tutoring service, held at Stockton this summer, called “They Are Heroes Too.” The program is the subject of Classroom Close-up, an NJTV show to be shown later this year. Dougherty recently enrolled as a graduate student in the Master of Arts in Education, a program within Stockton’s School of Education. She is also one of Stockton’s Professional Achievement Award recipients this year.

LTPD taking applications for Class II officers

The Lower Township Police Department in Cape May County is accepting applications for Special Class II Police Officers.

Applicants must hold a valid PTC certification for New Jersey Special Class II Officer and have a minimum of two years of experience as a law enforcement officer. Noyes Museum plans 30th anniversary gala

The Noyes Museum of Art of Stockton College will hold its 30th anniversary gala, “Noyes at 30,” from 6 to 9 p.m. Sept. 21.

The event will take place at the museum in Oceanville. Artist Earl B. Lewis will paint on-site; his work will be part of a live auction. Sculptor Roger Wing will demonstrate woodcarving techniques and create a special piece for the gala auction. Fred Noyes’ painting “Flowers,” donated by H. Paxson and Michelle Keates from their personal collection, will be featured in the art auction. Judy Courter, historian and author, will sign her book, “Fred and Ethel Noyes of Smithville, New Jersey: The Artist and the Entrepreneur.” Live music will be provided by SFBminor, a jazz subset of the Stockton Faculty Band. Gourmet cuisine will include “Fred and Ethel’s favorites,” modern interpretations of classic cuisine taken from Smithville Inn menus from the 1950s and ’60s, when the Noyeses owned and operated the inn. Gary Giberson, a friend of the Noyeses, renowned decoy carver and mayor of Port Republic, will make an appearance.

Drum Circle planned

The Herban Legend Boutique on the Village Greene in Historic Smithville presents its annual Autumn Drum Circle Event on Sept. 21.

The circle takes place from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. (rain date Sept. 22). The theme is Peace and the Balanced Harmonious Life and the event is free. Festivities include a Djembe Workshop, where the audience can learn the basics of West African drumming with master drum maker Conrad Kubiak. Hanna Rzasa, dance expressionist and instructor from the KineticPoetic School of Dance, explores improvisational dance movement with drum accompaniment, and assists the workshop in finding comfort in individual and group interpretive, and spontaneous dance expression.

Poets will share their works on peace and harmony. Poets include LoReal ElleVintage, Betty Jean Swartz, Lola Irizarry and Joe Mc Cullough. There may be an open mic segment. Fall Festival includes chili contest

On Sept. 28, the Mays Landing Merchants Association’s 12th annual Fall Festival includes a chili contest open to any restaurant within Atlantic County.

First-, second- and third-place winners will be announced at the end of the day and will receive a ribbon, bragging rights and a certificate to hang up. Contestants will be judged on overall taste, flavor and texture. The public can purchase the right to sample each of the entries for $1 from noon to 3 p.m. and vote on their favorite. Celebration commemorates anniversary of Peace Pilgrim’s first pilgrimage

The sixth annual Peace Pilgrim Celebration, Sept. 20-22, will commemorate the 60th anniversary of Mildred Lisette Norman’s transformation from a small-town farm girl to international peace activist.

The three-day event celebrates the life and work of Peace Pilgrim, an American sage who walked highways and byways for more than 27 years spreading her simple but profound message of peace: “Overcome evil with good, falsehood with truth, and hatred with love.”

Norman, born 1908 in Egg Harbor City, grew up on a small farm on the outskirts of town and was valedictorian of Egg Harbor High School. After many years of reflection, she relinquished her personal identity to become Peace Pilgrim. On Jan. 1, 1953, with just the clothes on her back, a toothbrush and comb, she started her cross-country pilgrimage for peace at the head of the Rose Parade in Pasadena, Calif. Those who attend the three-day celebration will be asked to re-enact Peace Pilgrim’s original pilgrimage by signing copies of her original petitions for peace, which will be delivered to the United Nations and Washington, D.C. in November. Egg Harbor City friends of Peace Pilgrim will also be asking for the public’s support in an effort to get Peace Pilgrim inducted into the New Jersey Hall of Fame.

Events include the two-mile Intergenerational Walk for Peace steps off from Peace Pilgrim Park, 500-block London Ave., at 9 a.m. Sept. 21. Registration starts at 8 a.m. Donation is $5. T-shirts will be available for the first 100 walkers. The second half of the walk will be in silent meditation.

Kids Fun Run set in A.C.

CASA for Children of Atlantic and Cape May Counties in partnership with the Milton and Betty Katz Jewish Community Center is hosting a Kids Fun Run at 11 a.m. Oct. 12 on the Boardwalk in conjunction with the Atlantic City Marathon Race Series. The Fun Run features a mile-long course for children ages 4 through 12. The cost to register before the day of the event is $15 per child, $20 the day of the race. Barbecue to benefit Operation First Response

Mainland Regional High School’s Support Our Troops program will host a barbecue fundraiser from 2 to 6 p.m. Sept. 21 at American Legion Post 352, First Street at Pennsylvania Avenue in Somers Point. Tickets are $10, and all proceeds will be donated to Operation First Response, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping wounded military veterans and their families.

Support Our Troops will present the proceeds of the barbecue and their other fundraising efforts at Walk for the Wounded, which will take place on the Ocean City Boardwalk on Sept. 28. To reduce costs for the barbecue, the group is seeking donations of food, beverages and paper goods.

Culinary classes set for fall

The RemArcAble Raffle was added to the Golfing for Good Tournament, now in its fifth year, in 2011 to help boost proceeds from the event.  The tournament was founded by local golfers Irv Singer and Steve Kuhl, who wanted to make a difference through their favorite pastime. Red Cross, Bob’s Discount Furniture launch scholarship program

Bob’s Discount Furniture and the American Red Cross launched the High School Heroes Scholarship Program during the New York Giants’ third annual American Red Cross blood drive Aug. 25.

This program will give high school students in New York and New Jersey the opportunity to compete with other schools during the 2013-14 school year for a share of $250,000 in scholarship money. The High School Heroes program honors students who make exceptional contributions to the American Red Cross blood donor program in their schools, and helps encourage young people to become involved by helping patients in need.

Students who host at least two high school blood drives through the year and achieve an annual participation rate of at least 30 percent of their school’s age-eligible students are qualified to win a base scholarship of $250. Students who meet those initial requirements are also eligible to win additional scholarships, including as many as eight $1,000 grand prize scholarships per winning school. The winners in each state are determined by the number of students who donate and the total units collected.

Stockton to host Pinelands Short Course

Richard Stockton College will host the 25th annual Pinelands Short Course on March 8, 2014, a daylong educational event that explores the unique ecology, culture and history of New Jersey’s Pinelands.

The course is open to the public and includes sessions on topics such as wildlife, plants, land-use/recreation and history and culture. Non-profit organizations and other groups may distribute information and sell Pinelands-themed books and artwork in an exhibition gallery. New Jersey educators who attend can earn professional development credits through the state Department of Education. The course will take place in Stockton’s Campus Center and in the new Unified Science Center, set to open this fall.

JCC presents fall author series

The Milton and Betty Katz Jewish Community Center of Margate in partnership with the Jewish Times and the Jewish Federation of Atlantic and Cape May Counties presents its Fall Author Lecture Series featuring topics surrounding politics and Israel, and will be held in the Katz JCC Auditorium, 501 N. At 7 p.m. Oct. 23, Professor Mark A. Stoler, Ph.D, will discuss his book “George S. Marshall and the Creation of Israel,” with a look into some of the most controversial of Marshall’s acts as secretary of state from 1947 to 1949 that concerned the 1947 partition of Palestine and the 1948 recognition of Israel. Training offered for literacy volunteers

Literacy Volunteers Association Cape-Atlantic Inc. is a volunteer-driven adult literacy provider that trains and supports people who wish to help improve the literacy skills in their community.

Volunteers receive 15 hours of instruction in teaching basic literacy (reading and writing) and conversational English. They provide educational services to adults free of charge and at a time and location (usually the library) convenient to both student and tutor. Once matched with a student, volunteer tutors offer reading, writing, job-preparedness, conversational English and survival skills instruction. Tutors also serve as mentors and role models for adults as they work toward achieving their educational and personal goals. LVA-CA has scheduled two upcoming training workshops:

Atlantic Cape to offer training in geospatial technology

This fall, Atlantic Cape Community College will offer Geospatial Technician Certification, a new training program in one a fast-growing career fields.

Geospatial Technician Certification will meet 6-9 p.m., Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning Oct. 7 at the Mays Landing Campus, Building T, 5100 Black Horse Pike. The course follows the STARS curriculum series, designed to teach and assess a student’s level of competence in the geospatial skill set required by the geospatial industry to become employed in the field. Right Notes fundraiser set for Oct. 17

Presentations offer Sandy recovery assistance

Atlantic County is hosting a series of free presentations on Hurricane Sandy by NJ Hope and Healing.

Small Sandy Survivors is an innovative children’s workshop developed by trained crisis counselors who recognized the need for children to process why such storms occur, their feelings throughout the storm, and the long-term impacts of such storms on individuals, families and communities. Children whose homes were not directly impacted by Superstorm Sandy may still have had to deal with displaced relatives, friends and neighbors, as well as losses within their communities or favorite shore landmarks. Small Sandy Survivors will be presented from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Sept. 21 and Oct. 5 and 19 at the Atlantic County Park Nature Center, 109 Route 50, Estell Manor.

Hurricane Planning and Recovery is an adult educational workshop that stresses the importance of preparation for all types of emergencies. It also includes means to manage stress and cope with emotions. Counselors encourage participants to share their experiences, ask questions and offer ideas. Hurricane Planning and Recovery will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Sept. 28 and Oct. 12 at the Atlantic County Park Nature Center, 109 Route 50, Estell Manor.

Registration open for religious classes

Congregation Beth Israel religious school is debuting a new integrated program of Hebrew and Judaic studies for kindergarten through sixth grade. The program combines the study of prayer book-based Hebrew with Jewish history, holidays and customs, worship services and parent participation.

Religious school sessions will be held Sundays from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. for grades 3-6. Classes for K-2 will take place 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. with aftercare available. Steve and Cookie’s Dog Show set for Sept. 29

The 17th annual Steve and Cookie’s Dog Show and Contest will be held Sept. 29 in conjunction with Margate’s Fall Funfest. Combining philanthropy and fun, the show and contest will be held at 1 p.m. in the parking lot of Steve and Cookie’s By the Bay at 9700 Amherst Ave. (corner of Amherst and Monroe avenues) in Margate.

On-site registration for the contest is from 10:30 am to 12:30 p.m. The contest will award prizes in four categories: Fashionista Dog (large and small dog), Owner That Most Resembles Dog (large and small dog), Most Handsome / Pretty Dog (large and small dog), and Most Talented Dog (one size fits all). Walk for Wounded set for Sept. 28

On Sept. 28, Ocean City Home Bank and Operation First Response will present the fifth annual Walk for the Wounded. Registration takes place at the Ocean City Music Pier at 8:30 a.m., and the three-mile Walk on the Boardwalk begins at 10 a.m.

Four years have passed since Ocean City Home Bank President Steve Brady offered to organize the event. The first walk took place in fall 2009, and it has been held each year after, raising more than $200,000 for Operation First Response, a nonprofit organization that provides financial assistance to injured soldiers and their families. Ocean City firefighters again have pledged to support the event, planning to sell stickers and T-shirts to raise money for the walk. In addition, Mainland Regional High School’s Support Our Troops club has set a fundraising goal of $10,000.

Walk for the Wounded raises funds for Operation First Response through pledges solicited by individual walkers and teams of walkers, as well as event sponsorships and fees for advertisements in the event’s dedication booklet. All proceeds benefit Operation First Response, a national 501c(3) nonprofit organization. Of every dollar raised for Operation First Response, 90 cents is donated to wounded soldiers and their families in times of crisis.

Call for photos for Noyes’ ‘Raw’ exhibit

The Noyes Museum of Art of Stockton College has announced an open call for photographs for “Raw,” its second annual juried photography competition and exhibition. the top 40 images will be selected by a juror for a group exhibition Nov. 7-Jan. 31 at the Noyes Gallery at Kramer Hall in Hammonton.

In keeping with the museum’s love for New Jersey’s natural features, images pertaining to New Jersey’s raw splendor and spirit that capture the beauty and diversity of New Jersey’s landscape, people, animals, water and nature are desired. Images in any photographic process are eligible for submission. Any image submitted must have been taken within the past three years. This year’s juror is Markam Keith Adams, assistant professor of photography at Rowan University.

There is a $25 submission fee for as many as five images; $6 for each additional image. Valid entries must include a completed application form and submission fee, and be submitted as digital files on a CD; no email submissions accepted. Homemade wine competition planned

The public is welcomed to participate in an amateur homemade wine competition during the third annual Waterfront Wine and Food Festival, which will take place noon to 5 p.m. Oct. 19 and 20 at Lake Lenape Park.

Red wines will be judged Oct. 19 and white wines on Oct. 20 based on a variety of characteristics. Wine bottles may be delivered by 11:30 a.m. on the day of the event. Entries should be in a 750ml bottle labeled with winemaker’s name and wine class. Participants must be at least 21 years of age and not be employed or a family member of any operating winery.

Entries will be judged by the South Jersey Wineries at the event. There is a $15 entry fee and applications are due by Oct. 12. Gold, silver and bronze medals will be awarded, along with bragging rights. There will be a best-in-show medal for the overall competition. Stockton PRSSA open for business

The National Public Relation Student Society of America organization in May accepted the request of Richard Stockton College students for national acceptance into the organization. The students have decided to name their chapter after their founding adviser, Dr. Ai Zhang.

The PRSSA is a national organization that gives public relations students networking opportunities and professional experience as they work with local businesses. The local chapter’s students are reaching out to local businesses to do public relations work for them. This would include events, fundraisers, writing press releases and using contacts to help improve the overall image of that business. This work will also help students of the organization gain hands-on experience in the public relations field.

A national school supply drive will benefit the Boys and Girls Clubs of Atlantic City and Vineland and the Lakehurst Navy Youth Center.

The Boys and Girls Clubs of America and Staples are teaming up with teen actor Jake T. Austin for the Staples for Students National School Supply Drive for kids in need. Until Sept. 28, customers can donate $1 or more at their local Staples store with 100 percent of the proceeds benefiting local students. All donations will be given locally to the Boys and Girls Club of Atlantic City and Vineland and the Lakehurst Navy Youth Center to ensure they get into the hands of disadvantaged youth just in time for the new school year. The Community Partnership for Egg Harbor Township Schools, Inc., will host the fourth annual Friends of Chuck Donovan Gourmet Wine Dinner and Auction at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 18, at the private and prestigious Hidden Creek Golf Club in Egg Harbor Township, where Donovan was a long-time member. VFW accepting essays for scholarship contest

Atlantic County-based Veterans of Foreign Wars District 16 is accepting entries for its VFW and Ladies Auxiliary Voice of Democracy scholarship competition, for which local high school students have the opportunity to compete for thousands of dollars and scholarships and a trip to Washington, D.C.

The program is open to students in ninth through 12th grades. Students must write and make an audio recording of an essay between three and five minutes in length expressing their views on the theme of “Why I’m optimistic about our nation’s future.” All essays and accompanying CD recordings must be submitted to a local VFW Post along with the completed V.O.D. entry form. Students must not identify themselves or their school in the essay or CD, and should do so only on their entry form. Submissions are due by Nov. 1.

VFW seeking nominees for Teacher of the Year

Atlantic-County-based Veterans of Foreign Wars District 16 is seeking nominees for its VFW and Ladies Auxiliary Smart/Maher VFW National Citizenship Education Teacher Award contest.

Each year, three exceptional teachers are recognized by the VFW for their outstanding commitment to teaching patriotism to their students. Post 16 will select one outstanding teacher from kindergarten-fifth grade, sixth-eighth grade and ninth-12th grade. These teachers move on to district level judging for the chance to compete at the state and national levels. National winners will receive a cash award for professional development expenses, a cash award for their school, plaques for themselves and their schools and an all-expenses-paid trip to attend a VFW conference and receive their award.

New Jersey Hope and Healing presents Small Sandy Survivors, a creative, interactive workshop that offers support and education to children ages 5-10 who were affected by Hurricane Sandy.

New Jersey Hope and Healing is sponsored by the NJ Division of Mental Health and Addiction Services, Disaster and Terrorism Branch, through a FEMA grant in partnership with Mental Health Association in New Jersey.

ACPD offers medication drop

The Atlantic City Police Department is one of several in the state to participate in Project Medicine Drop, police said, and officials encourage Atlantic County residents to use the program to safely get rid of old medications.

The program lets people dispose anonymously of unused and expired medications, at any time, at drop boxes in the headquarters of participating police departments. The drop boxes accept solid pharmaceuticals including pills, capsules, patches, inhalers and pet medications. They cannot accept syringes or liquids. Police maintain custody of the deposited drugs, and dispose of them using normal procedures; they also make a quarterly report to the Division of Consumer Affairs about the quantity of drugs turned in.

State Attorney General Jeffrey S. Chiesa said he encourages all Atlantic County residents check their medicine cabinets for expired or unneeded drugs, and bring them to the ACPD drop box, which is available around the clock every day. Atlantic City Police Chief Ernest Jubilee said his agency was pleased to participate in the project.
