Earth Day festival planned

The 23rd annual Earth Day Festival will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 21, rain or shine, at the Atlantic County Utilities Authority’s Haneman Environmental Park, 6700 Delilah Road, Egg Harbor Township.

The festival kicks off with a one-mile fun run at 8:30 a.m. and a 5K race at 9 a.m. with all proceeds benefiting the American Heart Association. Free educational programs and entertainment include: workshops on native plants, composting, rain barrels, alternative diet options and healthy foods; entertainment by Dave Street, the New Jersey Academy for Aquatic Science, and “Oceans are Talking,” a musical call-to-action ; tours of the wind farm, solar and wastewater facility in Atlantic City from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (last shuttle leaves 3:15 p.m.); eco-hayrides to the top of the landfill; tours of the recycling center; Cape May County Park and Zoo shows; touch tanks by the Atlantic City Aquarium and the Wetlands Institute; Franklin Institute electricity exhibit.

Exhibitors also will provide information and interactive activities such as live animal exhibits, games, crafts and plantings. There also will be crafters, food vendors, live music, pony rides, and a bowling lane and moon bounce to benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters.

Admiral Nissan raises funds for March for Babies

The Admiral Nissan auto dealership in Egg Harbor Township will be fundraising for the March for Babies walk on April 28 in Ocean City. The event starts at 1 p.m. and goes for five miles.

The event is held by the March of Dimes organization, whose mission is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality.

Stockton students donate to hurricane relief

Hospitality and tourism management students in Michael Scales’ events planning and catering management class at Richard Stockton College started planning a “Restore the Shore” themed event in January to raise funds to benefit those affected by Hurricane Sandy.

The class raised and donated more than $2,500 to the American Red Cross Southern Shore Chapter following the event April 3 in the college’s Campus Center. Scales and the class presented the check to Yvette Soto and Shireen Muldowney of the American Red Cross Southern Shore Chapter.

Atlantic County invites residents to begin growing healthy by participating in the third annual Growing Healthy: Atlantic County Community Garden Project, sponsored by the Atlantic County Division of Public Health and the Cape Atlantic Coalition for Health to promote healthy communities through good nutrition and exercise.

Sixteen raised garden beds are available. Nonprofit organizations will receive priority. Those interested in participating are invited to attend an information session at 6 p.m. April 24 at the Atlantic County Park, Route 50, Estell Manor, where they will receive education materials and instruction and learn more about opportunities to grow healthy and delicious Jersey-fresh produce in the county’s complimentary raised beds. ShopRite donates to Relay for Life

Dave Hahn and Helen Whoy, co-captains of ShopRite’s Scrunchy Bunch team for Relay for Life, recently presented a check for more than $17,000 to Christine Sands-Bennett, chair of Relay for Life of Linwood. The money was raised by ShopRite employees and customers who donated during February at area ShopRite stores.

The ShopRite Scrunchy Bunch team will participate in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life at Mainland Regional High School, 1301 Oak Ave., Linwood, on June 14-15.

Master Gardeners plan plant sale

The Master Gardeners Association of Atlantic County will sell wildlife-friendly and native perennials, herbs, annuals, vegetables, succulents, trees and shrubs at the annual plant sale from 10 a.m. to

The test identifies soil pH, as well as macro- and micronutrient content.

Greentree Church hosts conference on family

Greentree Church will host a family-equipping conference April 26-27 in the Learning Center Meeting Room at 125 Schoolhouse Road in Egg Harbor Township.

The purpose of the conference is to equip parents in their primary role of discipleship within the family. Andy Farmer and Mark Prater, both of Covenant Fellowship Church in Glen Mills, Pa., will be the featured speakers.

EHT artist featured at Great Bay Gallery

Great Bay Gallery in Somers Point is opening its 2013 season on April 24 with an exhibit by Rachel Smith, of Egg Harbor Township.

The exhibit, “Figure and Form,” includes oil and acrylic paintings as well as work in ceramic, clay and wood sculpture. A meet-the-artist reception will take place 1-3 p.m. April 27, during the annual Bayfest celebration. The reception is open to the public. Stockton Medley Series to celebrate Broadway

The Medley Series will bring dancers, musicians and performers to the Campus Center Theater at Richard Stockton College to celebrate longtime Broadway favorites.

Lecture series to explores Jewish life in Middle Ages

Despite periodic attacks and persecution, the Middle Ages was a dynamic and prosperous time for the Jewish people. Learn about how Jews in different regions fared during the Middle Ages, in a lecture series presented by the Board of Jewish Education.

Atlantic Cape hosting open house

Atlantic County government employees recognized

Atlantic County government employees are to be recognized for charitable giving as county government receives the Outstanding Campaign Award for its efforts during the 2012-13 Public Employee Charitable Campaign.

The award will be presented by the United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey during its April 30 annual awards celebration. County employees pledged about $66,000 to support programs and services of local, national and international charities, a 40 percent increase from the previous year.

Native plant swap sale for backyard habitats

Gardeners can pot up their extra native plants for the Unitarian Universalist Congregation’s annual Native Plant Swap and Sale on May 4 at 75 S. Pomona Road at the corner of Liebig Street, Galloway Township.

Participants who bring two native plants to cover the price of admission can swap as many as 10 additional plants. Participants without plants to swap may purchase as many as three plants for $2 each. The event focuses on native, non-invasive perennials, shrub and tree seedlings, as well as non-invasive species beneficial to butterflies, hummingbirds and other wildlife. The goal is to promote more backyard habitat in southern New Jersey by providing local gardeners who bring plants to swap with a source of inexpensive or free native plants, said Jesse Connor, of Port Republic.

AtlantiCare will recognize New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and first lady Mary Pat Christie; the Ensign John R. Elliott HERO Campaign for Designated Drivers; and John W. British Car Gathering set for Smithville

The fourth annual Ted Ley Memorial British Car Gathering will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 20 in Smithville. The rain date is April 21.

Proceeds from the event will benefit Samaritan Healthcare and Hospice of Marlton, the not-for-profit organization that cared for Ted during his final illness and for which his wife, Joan, has volunteered for four years. Ted Ley was a long-time member of the British Motor Club of Southern New Jersey and the Delaware Valley Jaguar Club. He died of lymphoma in 2010 while receiving Samaritan’s hospice care, and his clubmates organized the British Car Gathering to honor his memory and to raise funds for Samaritan programs and services.

The entry fee is $5 per exhibited car. Admission is free for spectators, but there will be a free-will donation jar for those wishing to support Samaritan’s cause, British Motor Club Vice President Ed Gaubert said.

JCC hosts dinner and movie

The Milton and Betty Katz Jewish Community Center in Margate will host a special dinner and a movie event at 5 p.m. on April 30 in the auditorium.

The film “Life of Pi” takes audiences through a fantasy about a young man who survives a disaster at sea and is swept into an epic adventure, and forms an unexpected connection with another survivor: a Bengal tiger. Participants sought for study

The School of Social and Behavioral Sciences at Richard Stockton College is looking for participants in a paid research project that will examine activity that occurs in the brain when people view advertisements.

The project’s goal is to learn more about the brain activity that occurs when people view advertisements that affect their decisions to purchase products. To participate, you must be right-handed and between the ages of 24 and 40. All participants will have their brain activity recorded with electroencephalography (EEG) as they watch commercials. EEG records activity from the brain through sensors placed on the scalp.

The research, expected to begin in early to mid-April, will be conducted in a single session lasting about 1.5 hours. Participants will be compensated $40 for their involvement. All data collection will be done on the Stockton campus at 101 Vera King Farris Drive, Galloway Township. The research project, “The Brain’s Response to Advertisements,” is conducted by Dr. Jessica Fleck, associate professor of psychology, in conjunction with researchers from Temple University’s Fox School of Business.

Free workshop for aspiring teachers

Richard Stockton College’s School of Education will hold a free teacher information workshop from 5 to 6:30 p.m. April 24 at the college’s Hammonton instructional site, Kramer Hall, 30 Front St.

The Mays Landing Rotary Club is sponsoring a Rotary Youth Exchange student during the 2013-14 school year. This student will attend Oakcrest High School.

This year, the student is expected to be a boy from Germany. He will be between 15½ and 18 years old when he arrives at the end of August. He will spend his junior or senior year of high school learning a new language in a new country.

The Rotary program is to have a family host a student for about 3½ months, so three families will host the student during his exchange school year. Students must follow a defined set of rules, which they acknowledge before departing their home country. They have an allowance of $90 per month supplied by the Rotary Club and have expectations of family financial support from home for things such as clothing.

The host family must live in an area that attends Oakcrest High School. The family is expected to provide a place to sleep and meals including lunch for the student. A shared room is fine; students do not have to have a bedroom of their own. There also should be a place to study. They should be treated the same as any other family member with respect to chores. They agree in advance that it is their responsibility to adjust to the host family and they do not expect to be treated as a guest. They are expected to successfully pass their courses in high school.

Families with children, families without children, dual parent families and single parent families are all acceptable. All applicants for hosting will have an application taken that includes an in-home interview and a background check will be run.

Scholarship available for Absegami students

The Galloway Township Business Association will offer a $1,000 scholarship to a 2013 graduating senior from Absegami High School.

The candidate must plan to attend a two- or four-year college or university majoring in business administration, marketing, accounting, finance, operations management or similar business majors. The GTBA is looking to support future entrepreneurs and business leaders.

College offers workshops

Atlantic Cape Community College will offer a variety of workshops this spring for those interested in enhancing their skills.

Sanitation Training will teach participants to recognize the responsibilities involving the prevention of food-borne illnesses. The ServSafe Food Safety Training Program also will help food-service workers understand proper storage, food preparation, cleaning and sanitizing to ensure safe food handling, two sections, beginning April 19 and April 30.

TIPs Certification trains participants to recognize potential alcohol-related problems and intervene to prevent alcohol-related tragedies. This workshop is ideal for those who deal with alcohol in a licensed establishment, three sections, beginning April 27, May 4 and May 7.

Artists wanted for Boardwalk show

The Atlantic City Arts Commission and Noyes Museum of Art of Richard Stockton College invite all artists to the Boardwalk Art Show, a revival of the tradition of Boardwalk art shows, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 7 on the Atlantic City Boardwalk.

The event is free and all proceeds from the event will be used for future art events in Atlantic City. All artwork must be original and created by the artist registering for the show. Entry fee is $75 for a 12-by-12-foot space. FSA to hold rededication

The Family Service Association will hold a rededication and unveiling ceremony of its FSA East building for client services at 10 a.m. April 23 at 312 E. White Horse Pike, Galloway Township.

College offers summer discount

Richard Stockton College is offering a summer tuition discount for undergraduate courses as well as a summer housing discount on its Galloway Township campus.

The discounted course rates also are offered at the Carnegie Center and at three new Stockton instructional sites in Manahawkin, Hammonton and Woodbine. Stockton’s eight summer sessions, which have start dates in May, June and July, are open to students enrolled in degree programs, non-matriculated students and students currently enrolled at other institutions. Students can save more than $300 for each four-credit undergraduate course. A 20 percent housing discount is also offered to those wishing to reside on the main Galloway campus during the summer. Summer sessions enable students to graduate sooner or lighten their course loads during the fall or spring semesters. Walk your dog to fight cancer

Bring your favorite pooch on a walk to fight cancer at the American Cancer Society Bark for Life of Atlantic County at 9 a.m. April 27 on the Linwood Bike Path, starting at Linwood Market parking lot, 136 W. Poplar Ave. Registration/check-in will begin at 8:30 a.m. followed by the opening ceremony at 9 a.m. and then the one-mile walk.

Bark for Life is a noncompetitive walk event for dogs and their owners to raise funds and awareness for the American Cancer Society’s fight against cancer. Taste of Town moves to larger space

The second annual International Taste of the Town event is moving to a larger venue at Renault Winery’s Grand Ballroom from 4 to 8 p.m. April 28 at 72 N. Bremen Ave., Egg Harbor City. Last year’s inaugural event sold out when it was held at the city’s Ambulance Squad Building. This year’s event, sponsored by the Greater Egg Harbor City Chamber of Commerce, will increase attendance by 50 percent when 300 foodies sample international cuisines prepared by the area’s top chefs.

A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Community FoodBank of New Jersey, Southern Branch. Visitors can bring a non-perishable food item to the event to donate to the Kitchen Door food pantry at the Moravian Church.

Group offered for substance abusers

The Presbyterian Church at Hammonton has created a group to offer hope and support to those with a family member struggling with substance abuse. This group provides a safe, confidential gathering place where stories are heard without judgment. It is a place for those who have watched loved ones struggle with addiction.

The parents, guardians, spouses, children and others affected by family members who struggle with suspected or confirmed substance abuse can find and offer support and learn more about addiction. The group offers hope and the knowledge that we are not alone.

Stockton Foundation gala set

The 33rd annual Stockton College Scholarship Benefit Gala, hosted by the Stockton College Foundation, will take place April 27 at the Revel in Atlantic City. Tickets are $225 per person. Competition for students of Indian origin

The North South Foundation, a volunteer driven 501(c) e organization will hold an educational contest for students in first through 12th grades who are of Indian origin, on April 28 at University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey School of Osteopathic Medicine in Stratford. At least one parent or grandparent must be of Indian origin.

The proceeds collected through registration charges will be used for scholarships for disadvantaged college students in India. Free vacations offered

The Ocean City Tourism Commission, Ocean City Regional Chamber of Commerce and Ocean City Board of Realtors have once again joined forces to promote “America’s Greatest Family Resort” by awarding 11 families a fun-filled, week-long family vacation in Ocean City.

Each of the 11 winners will receive a seven-night stay in a three or four bedroom condo that sleeps as many as eight people. Pictures, addresses and descriptions of each unit are available on the contest entry page.

5K run scheduled May 4

The Hammonton Mothers’ Club will sponsor the Hammonton 5K Run For Fun at 9 a.m. May 4 at the Hammonton Lake Park, 100 Sports Drive, Hammonton. Proceeds of the event will benefit Hammonton Youth Recreation and the Hammonton Parks and Recreation Department, which provides recreational programs and playground facilities in the greater Hammonton area.

The course will be a police assisted run through the quaint and historic streets of Hammonton, starting and ending at the Hammonton Lake Park. There will also be a one-mile family walk on a traffic-free track. Prizes and medals will be awarded to the top male and female runners. Other awards will be given to the top male and female in many age categories.

Foodie Tuesdays scheduled

Foodie Tuesdays at Richard Stockton College in Hammonton are a series of continuing education courses focusing on culinary education. The classes are designed so that participants can sign up for one, all or any number of the courses. Each seminar begins at Kramer Hall, 30 Front St. in Hammonton, for a discussion and instruction from a culinary expert. Afterwards, the seminar will move a few blocks away to Rocco’s Town House, 21 N. Third St., for light dining in the heart of Hammonton’s arts district.

Emergency Medical Technician Certification will prepare students to perform basic life support. Participants will learn adult and pediatric medical and trauma assessment, basic airway support, use of AED, assisting patients with medication administration, splinting, bleeding control, lifting, transferring and transporting stretchers and patients, beginning Sept. 6.

Meerwald in A.C. this summer

The A.J. Meerwald, New Jersey’s official tall ship, is scheduled to dock at Historic Gardner’s Basin, Atlantic City, from Aug. 1 to 11. Public tours and sails are scheduled, including themed sails with pirates, trawling for marine critters, romantic evening sails and a full-day Sailor Camp for children age 10 to 16 years.

Library offers language learning

The Atlantic County Library System now offers more language learning opportunities through the Mango Languages online resource. The most recently added languages are Egyptian, modern standard Arabic, Romanian and Swahili. Mango Languages offers nearly 50 world language courses and15 English as a Second Language courses.

Mango users may choose to learn simple, practical skills for common polite, conversational situations or to learn in-depth and comprehensive language and grammar skills. Each language is presented with an appreciation for cultural nuance and real-world application that goes beyond teaching vocabulary to integrate components of grammar and culture. Mango teaches actual conversation, breaking down complex linguistic elements within an audio-visual framework that draws important connections and builds on information the user already has learned.

No special training, downloads or installation are required to use Mango Languages on a home computer. Free iPhone and Android apps are available through the library system.

The Stockton College Education Center will offer a series of one-day professional development courses for K-12 educators through May. The Stockton College Education Center is in the new addition to the Sam Azeez Museum of Woodbine Heritage of Stockton College, located at 610 Washington Ave. in Woodbine.

Undergarments wanted

The ACFSO is collecting donated new unopened packages of male and female undergarments from children sizes to young adult. The undergarments are to care for the needs of children during a crisis that ends up in an extended hospital stay.

Relay for Life set

The American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life will take place June 14-15 at Mainland Regional High School, 1301 Oak Ave., Linwood. This overnight event is held to recognize that cancer doesn’t sleep and neither will we until we find the cure. Participants walk around the track to raise money for cancer.

Highlighting the event is the luminaria service, a candlelight vigil held at nightfall to honor survivors and to remember those lost to cancer. Luminaria candles line the track and are left burning throughout the night as a reminder to participants of the importance of their involvement in the Relay For Life event.

Tickets on sale for food event

The organizers of the annual Chefs at the Shore event are making tickets available early specifically for holiday gifts. The 2013 Chefs at the Shore fundraiser is scheduled for 5:30 to 9 p.m. June 20 at Historic Gardner’s Basin, Atlantic City.

The event appeals to “foodies” and environmentalists alike, as it showcases some of the area’s finest food while it funds educational programming at the Atlantic City Aquarium. Golden Cotillion planned

The National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, Inc. Iota Chapter will introduce a Golden Cotillion in spring 2013.

The Golden Cotillion, “Lovelier the Second Time Around,” will feature women 60 and older. It will provide an opportunity for mature ladies to experience relevant workshops and an evening of dining, dancing and fun. Ladies are sought to participate. A sponsorship fee will be required.
