Fundraiser set for McMeekin scholarship fund

The Officer Thomas McMeekin Jr. Memorial Division of the Ancient Order of Hibernians has started a college scholarship fund in McMeekin's honor.

A beef-and-beer for ages 21 and older will take place from 7 to 11 p.m. June 14 at the Vagabond Kitchen and Tap House, 672 N Trenton Ave., Atlantic City, to raise funds for scholarships. Tickets are $25 and include a buffet, draft beer donated by the Yards Brewing Co., live music outside and a DJ inside, bagpipe bands, giveaways, 50/50 raffles and more. McMeekin was killed in the line of duty while directing traffic on March 3, 2005. He is survived by his wife, Jennifer, his daughter, Adria Lynne, and parents, brother and other relatives.

'My Pocket Pal' to be screened

The premiere of the film "My Pocket Pal" by Jean Antolini is scheduled for June 6 on the 13th floor screening room at Resorts Casino Hotel in Atlantic City.

A reception is set for 6-7 p.m. and the screening for 7-7:30 p.m, and tickets are a $10 donation.

"My Pocket Pal" is a documentary short whose topic was inspired by the photo-sharing site Instagram, as a testament to the theory that sometimes people are just meant to find each other. A portion of the proceeds go to the Women's Center in Linwood.

15th annual fluke tournament set

The 15th annual "Brutus" Fluke Tournament is scheduled for 6 a.m.-2 p.m. June 15. This tournament, initiated in 1999 to honor the memory of bay fisherman Walter "the Brute" Gregory Sr., has become a yearly tradition for anglers of all ages hoping to catch the big one.

Egg Harbor Township Elks Lodge 2563 and Somers Point AmVet Post 911 are again combining their efforts. The tournament proceeds help the organizations support charities that benefit veterans and disabled children. The entry fee is $30 per angler. This year's tournament features $1,000 in three cash prizes ($500 for first) and nine non-cash prizes. Anglers may fish from boat, bridges or the shore. The Somers Point head boat Duke of Fluke (609-927-2280) is offering a special trip that day returning to dock well before the weigh-in cutoff time. Deadline for registration will be at the end of the 6 p.m. captains' meeting June 14. Registration will includes free snacks during registration and a free awards buffet after the tournament. Irish American Cultural Society offers program

Mike Plunkett, a Civil War period musician, will bring his one-man program, "Paddy Has Gone for a Soldier," to the members and guests if the Irish American Cultural Society at 7:30 p.m June 11.

As a reenactor in authentic uniform, Plunkett brings to life the experiences of Irish immigrants who became American patriots. A focus will be on the songs and stories of the Soldiers of the Irish Brigade, who fought with valor at Vicksburg and Fredricksburg. The meeting will take place at the Absecon American Legion Hall, New Jersey Avenue and Mill Road. The meeting is free and open to the public.

American Cancer Society recognizes AMI

The American Cancer Society recently presented Atlantic Medical Imaging with a plaque in recognition of AMI's support of the Making Strides against Breast Cancer Walk in Ocean City.

AMI has been involved with the American Cancer Society event since its inception and has been a flagship sponsor for the past two years. This year's walk will take place Oct. 20 on the Ocean City boardwalk.

Conference focuses on green credentials

Atlantic Cape Community College will host a Green Credentials Matter Conference, 8 a.m.-noon June 27 at the Walter Edge Theater, C-Building, 5100 Black Horse Pike, in Mays Landing.

Industry experts will discuss how professionals can become certified under new energy efficiency and sustainability regulations as they relate to retrofitting, repairing and rebuilding homes affected by Hurricane Sandy. Relay for Life set

It's not too late to register for the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life, to be held at Mainland Regional High School, 1301 Oak Aven., Linwood, June 14-15. Opening ceremonies start at 6 p.m., followed by a survivor's walk around the track.

This overnight event is held to recognize that cancer doesn't sleep and neither will we until we find the cure. Participants walk around the track to raise money for cancer. Highlighting the event is the luminaria service, a candlelight vigil held at nightfall to honor survivors and to remember those lost to cancer. Luminaria candles line the track and are left burning through the night. Relay For Life is open to anyone who wants to participate. Cancer survivors may walk for free. Volunteers of all ages are needed. Sponsorships also are needed.

VFW taking entries for essay competition

Atlantic County-based Veterans of Foreign Wars District 16 is taking entries for its VFW and Ladies Auxiliary Patriot's Pen essay scholarship competition for students in sixth through eighth grades.

One first-place winner from each district will be sent to compete at the state level for a chance to compete nationally. The national winner earns a $5,000 scholarship and an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C. To enter, students must write an essay of between 300 and 400 words on the theme "What patriotism means to me." Students must not identify themselves or their school in the essay, and should do so only on their entry form. Essays must be submitted to the local VFW post by Nov. 1.

Original plays to be read

Players and Playwrights by the Jersey Shore will perform readings of eight short plays written by local playwrights at 3 p.m. June 15 at Dante Hall Theater, 14 N. Mississippi Ave, Atlantic City.

Readings are produced by John Perovich, adjunct instructor of playwriting for the School of Arts and Humanities at the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey in Galloway Township.

The suggested admission donation is $5, and half of all donations will go toward Stockton student scholarships. Complimentary refreshments will be served. VFW accepting essays for scholarship contest

Atlantic County-based Veterans of Foreign Wars District 16 is accepting entries for its VFW and Ladies Auxiliary Voice of Democracy scholarship competition, for which local high school students have the opportunity to compete for thousands of dollars and scholarships and a trip to Washington, D.C.

The program is open to students in ninth through 12th grades. Students must write and make an audio recording of an essay between three and five minutes in length expressing their views on the theme of "Why I'm optimistic about our nation's future." All essays and accompanying CD recordings must be submitted to a local VFW Post along with the completed V.O.D. entry form. Students must not identify themselves or their school in the essay or CD, and should do so only on their entry form. Submissions are due by Nov. 1.

Beachstock 2013, billed as the Planet's Biggest Beach Party, is set for June 29 (rain date June 30) in Margate. Events include:

VFW seeking nominees for Teacher of the Year

Atlantic-County-based Veterans of Foreign Wars District 16 is seeking nomineees for its VFW and Ladies Auxiliary Smart/Maher VFW National Citizenship Education Teacher Award contest.

Each year, three exceptional teachers are recognized by the VFW for their outstanding commitment to teaching patriotism to their students. Post 16 will select one outstanding teacher from kindergarten-fifth grade, sixth-eighth grade and ninth-12th grade. These teachers move on to district level judging for the chance to compete at the state and national levels. National winners will receive a cash award for professional development expenses, a cash award for their school, plaques for themself and their school and an all-expenses-paid trip to attend a VFW conference and receive their award.

Event to raise funds for Lucy the Elephant

Lucy the Elephant, a National Historic Landmark, is having a fundraiser from 5:30 to 8 p.m. June 11 at Sophia Restaurant, Adams and Amherst avenues in Margate.

The event, organized by Lucy's board Treasurer and CFO Joette Metzler, will feature complimentary hors d'oeuvres courtesy of Sophia Restaurant, live music with the sounds of the Drive Ins, a cash bar and a Chinese auction. LEED for Green Associate PLUS, July 18 and 25, prepares beginning green building professionals to pass the Green Building Certification Institute's LEED for Green Associate exam.

County offers online golf reservations

Playing golf at the Atlantic County John F. Gaffney Green Tree Golf Course just got a little easier - golfers can reserve a tee time online.

Golfers can access the online reservation system at greentree.aclink.org. The system can accommodate reservations for two to four players with tee times from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. in eight-minute intervals. The system is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Reservations also can be made by calling the clubhouse at 609-625-9131 during business hours.

The Green Tree Golf Course is located on Route 559 in Egg Harbor Township. It is known for its tight, tree lined fairways and its excellent greens. It is home to one of the only par 6 holes in the Northeast. The course provides reduced rates for county residents and offers leagues, clinics, private lessons with a PGA golf professional, special events and activities. A driving range is available, as well as a practice putting/chipping green and snack bar. The Pro Shop is open daily 6 a.m.-7 p.m.

Free mold awareness training for Hurricane Sandy victims

A free three-hour class on mold awareness and general safety procedures will be presented at three Atlantic County locations in June to help residents and homeowners who are dealing with cleanup issues after Hurricane Sandy.

The class is presented by the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey in cooperation with the New Jersey Department of Health. The class will educate residents on how to identify mold in the home, protect themselves when removing mold, the use of personal protective equipment and proper cleanup procedures, as well as to recognize environmental and safety issues that may be present.

CASA holding information sessions

Stockton offers CSI summer camp

The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey this summer will host a group of young investigators - CSI campers - as they learn about crime scene investigation and courtroom techniques.

Dr. Joshua Duntley, associate professor of criminal justice, and Dr. Christine Tartaro, professor of criminal justice, designed the five-day overnight summer camp for high school students, which is entering its seventh year. Campers first learn how to collect evidence and how to record a crime scene as first responders. They spend the rest of their time solving a murder case that is staged on campus. Campers experience all aspects of an investigation including police reports, eye-witness interviews, fingerprinting, DNA analysis, jury selection and trial preparation. Officers from the Stockton Police Department go over fingerprinting and introduce police dog Hemi to the campers. The students also visit a jail and the Medical Examiner's Office.

Donny Fund Day set

The 19th annual Donny Fund Day will take place at the Yacht Club of Pleasantville on June 9.

It will consist of a 2.5-mile row, swim or paddle surf race acrosse Lake's Bay and a 5K run/walk along the Lake's Bay shore, and takes place from 8 a.m. to noon. Entry is $25 and $15 for students and includes a T-shirt and a "Bert's Breakfast" brunch. Brunch only is $7.

MMSC celebrates Dolphin Day

On June 8, the Marine Mammal Stranding Center will celebrate Dolphin Day.

Beginning at 10 a.m., the center will offer guided tours of its rescue and rehabilitation facility, along with educational demonstrations and arts and crafts activities. There will be screenings of videos documenting the center's founding and work with marine mammals and sea turtles.

The Noyes Museum of Art of Stockton College invites local dog owners and their dogs to the Art and Bark evening June 20 from 5 to 8 p.m.

Miss Night in Venice contestants sought

Support group helps young storm survivors

New Jersey Hope and Healing presents Small Sandy Survivors, a creative workshop that offers support and education to children ages 5-10 who were affected by Hurricane Sandy.

The program helps children better understand and cope with the effects of the storm. Counselors are on hand to meet with parents during the workshop. There are fun activities, interactive and free. New Jersey Hope and Healing is sponsored by the New Jersey Division of Mental Health and Addiction Services, Disaster and Terrorism Branch, through a FEMA grant in partnership with Mental Health Association in NJ.

Classes offered for seniors

Atlantic Cape Community College's Club 50 Plus will offer workshops this summer designed to enhance the personal, professional and social lives of older learners.

Introduction to the Personal Computer for Seniors will guide participants through computer basics. This course will also cover a brief introduction to the Internet, five Fridays, beginning June 8 (no class on July 5).

Learn to Play Blackjack will teach participants the basics of Blackjack, including: hit, stand, double down, split and surrender. Hand signals and what bust, win/lose, push and natural mean will also be reviewed, two Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning June 11.

Exploring the World via the Internet for Seniors will help participants learn about using email, sending digital pictures and greeting cards, searching for people and maps on the Web, and researching information about health issues, travel, shopping, coupons and more online, two Fridays, beginning July 19.

Manage, Edit and Email Your Photographs will prepare participants to move images from a digital camera to a computer, then edit and resize pictures for use on the Web or email. Students should bring to class a digital camera and a USB cable to connect to the computer, two sections beginning July 11 and Aug. 9.

TD Charitable Foundation supports JFS

The TD Charitable Foundation, the charitable giving arm of TD Bank, recently donated a total of $5,000 to Jewish Family Service of Atlantic and Cape May Counties as part of the bank's commitment to giving back to the community.

This funding supports the ongoing efforts of the Jewish Family Service Economic Response Center in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. Absecon Lighthouse's annual golf tournament will take place June 7 at McCullough's Emerald Golf Links in Egg Harbor Township.

Atlantic Cape offering kids cooking classes

Atlantic Cape Community College's Academy of Culinary Arts will offer Kids in the Kitchen cooking sessions for children ages 8-12 through the summer.

The classes are designed to help young chefs build skills and confidence in the kitchen, and will teach kitchen safety and an understanding of healthy cooking while giving participants a chance to make friends and have fun. The class costs $195 and includes hat and apron.

The Atlantic County Medical Society will offer scholarship money to medical students who are accepted to or are attending an accredited medical school. Applicants must be residents of Atlantic County.

Library expands computer training schedule

The Atlantic City Free Public Library has instituted changes to its computer training program to make taking classes easier.

First, pre-registration is no longer required. The classes, which are open to Atlantic City Library card holders, are now on a first-come, first-served basis. Those interested in attending are asked to bring their Atlantic City Library card to class. There also are more class sessions. The schedule features six to seven sessions per month.

Job Skills Basics: June 11 from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Learn how and where to search for jobs on the Internet, strategies to get a job and practice filling out a sample online job application.

Microsoft Word Basics: June 24 from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Learn how to create, edit, save and print Word documents by making a resume. Resume templates will be provided.

Auxiliary presents $475,000 donation to Shore Medical Center

The Shore Medical Center Auxiliary celebrated a successful fundraising year, making a $475,000 donation to Shore Medical Center Board of Trustees Chairman Gerald J. Corcoran, Esq., and Shore Medical Center Foundation Chairman James Fraser on April 18 at the Crab Trap in Somers Point.

The auxiliary is the medical center's original fundraising organization, with a legacy dating back to Shore's founding in 1940. The donation is part of the auxiliary's $2.5 million pledge to the Shore Tomorrow campaign, which helped fund the construction of Shore's state-of-the-art Surgical Pavilion and Campus Expansion. Over the past 40 years, the auxiliary has contributed more than $11 million in support of Shore.

During Thursday's event, Pat Crowley, of Ocean City, was presented with the New Jersey Hospital Association Catalyst of the Year Award. Also recognized were members of the Women's Golf Tournament Organizing Committee, which has staged the event for 20 years and will hand off responsibility for the tournament after this year. Members include Juanita Harmon, of Pleasantville, June Heun, of Linwood, Carol McDowell, of Somers Point, and Gerrie McNelis, Judi O'Donnell, Carol Platt, Joanne Sankey and Millie Traa, of Egg Harbor Township.

Family Fun Day set in Brigantine

The City of Brigantine and the Brigantine Community Presbyterian Church will present the third annual Brigantine Community Family Fun Day on July 6, with a rain date of July 7.

The parade is scheduled to start at 4 p.m. from the 26th Street Recreation Complex and will march to the 15th Street Complex. The festivities will begin as soon as the parade arrives and will continue until 9 p.m. The activities at 15th Street will include musical entertainment, amusement rides, games for the children, strolling entertainers, local talent, games of chance, local organizations selling their wares and food.

Local organizations and businesses are invited to participate in Family Fun Day 2013 by setting up booths for games/activities, selling items and preparing and selling food. ACPD offers medication drop

The Atlantic City Police Department is one of several in the state to participate in Project Medicine Drop, police said, and officials encourage Atlantic County residents to use the program to safely get rid of old medications.

The program lets people dispose anonymously of unused and expired medications, at any time, at drop boxes in the headquarters of participating police departments. The drop boxes accept solid pharmaceuticals including pills, capsules, patches, inhalers and pet medications. They cannot accept syringes or liquids. Police maintain custody of the deposited drugs, and dispose of them using normal procedures; they also make a quarterly report to the Division of Consumer Affairs about the quantity of drugs turned in.

State Attorney General Jeffrey S. Chiesa said he encourages all Atlantic County residents check their medicine cabinets for expired or unneeded drugs, and bring them to the ACPD drop box, which is available around the clock every day. Atlantic City Police Chief Ernest Jubilee said his agency was pleased to participate in the project.

Oakcrest Wall of Fame nominees needed

Oakcrest High School in Mays Landing is accepting nominations for its 2013 Athletic Wall of Fame induction ceremony, an annual tradition that honors athletic talents, achievements and contributions of Oakcrest alumni, former staff and supporters.

The awards ceremony occurs during the fall football season. It was instituted in 1994 by now-retired physical education teacher Carol Rott. Open call for short films

The Noyes Museum of Art of the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey is holding an open call for film shorts for the Noyes Independent Film Series, which consists of three festivals: the Hammonton Outdoor Film Fest on July 18, the Noyes Independent Film Festival on Nov. 16 and the Noyes Atlantic City Film Festival in spring 2014.

Films will be chosen from original works that have never been shown, works by young independent filmmakers ages 18-20, and films that have been previously screened. Submissions should be between 2 and 60 minutes long. The deadline for submissions is July 1.

Registration open for theater summer camp

Rotary Club seeks host families in Oakcrest area

The Mays Landing Rotary Club is sponsoring a Rotary Youth Exchange student during the 2013-14 school year. This student will attend Oakcrest High School.

This year, the student is expected to be a boy from Germany. He will be between 15½ and 18 years old when he arrives at the end of August. He will spend his junior or senior year of high school learning a new language in a new country.

The Rotary program is to have a family host a student for about 3½ months, so three families will host the student during his exchange school year. Students must follow a defined set of rules, which they acknowledge before departing their home country. They have an allowance of $90 per month supplied by the Rotary Club and have expectations of family financial support from home for things such as clothing.

The host family must live in an area that attends Oakcrest High School. The family is expected to provide a place to sleep and meals including lunch for the student. A shared room is fine; students do not have to have a bedroom of their own. There also should be a place to study. They should be treated the same as any other family member with respect to chores. They agree in advance that it is their responsibility to adjust to the host family and they do not expect to be treated as a guest. They are expected to successfully pass their courses in high school.

Families with children, families without children, dual parent families and single parent families are all acceptable. All applicants for hosting will have an application taken that includes an in-home interview and a background check will be run.

The Atlantic City Arts Commission and Noyes Museum of Art of Richard Stockton College invite all artists to the DoArtAC.com Boardwalk Art Show, a revival of the tradition of Boardwalk art shows, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 7 on the Atlantic City Boardwalk.

The event is free and all proceeds from the event will be used for future art events in Atlantic City. All artwork must be original and created by the artist registering for the show. Group offered for substance abusers

The Presbyterian Church at Hammonton has created a group to offer hope and support to those with a family member struggling with substance abuse. This group provides a safe, confidential gathering place where stories are heard without judgment. It is a place for those who have watched loved ones struggle with addiction.

The parents, guardians, spouses, children and others affected by family members who struggle with suspected or confirmed substance abuse can find and offer support and learn more about addiction. The group offers hope and the knowledge that we are not alone.

Foodie Tuesdays at Richard Stockton College in Hammonton are a series of continuing education courses focusing on culinary education. The Health Professions Institute at Atlantic Cape Community College will offer programs to help health-care professionals advance their skills.

Emergency Medical Technician Certification will prepare students to perform basic life support. The A.J. Meerwald, New Jersey's official tall ship, is scheduled to dock at Historic Gardner's Basin, Atlantic City, from Aug. 1 to 11. Public tours and sails are scheduled, including themed sails with pirates, trawling for marine critters, romantic evening sails and a full-day Sailor Camp for children age 10 to 16 years.

Library offers language learning

The Atlantic County Library System now offers more language learning opportunities through the Mango Languages online resource. The most recently added languages are Egyptian, modern standard Arabic, Romanian and Swahili. Mango Languages offers nearly 50 world language courses and15 English as a Second Language courses.

Mango users may choose to learn simple, practical skills for common polite, conversational situations or to learn in-depth and comprehensive language and grammar skills. Each language is presented with an appreciation for cultural nuance and real-world application that goes beyond teaching vocabulary to integrate components of grammar and culture. Mango teaches actual conversation, breaking down complex linguistic elements within an audio-visual framework that draws important connections and builds on information the user already has learned.

No special training, downloads or installation are required to use Mango Languages on a home computer. Free iPhone and Android apps are available through the library system.

Undergarments wanted

The Atlantic Cape Family Support Organization is collecting donated new unopened packages of male and female undergarments from children sizes to young adult. The undergarments are to care for the needs of children during a crisis that ends up in an extended hospital stay.

Donations can be dropped off at the Northfield office, 950 Tilton Road, Suite 108. All donations will go to Bridgeton Hospital.

Bar association membership drive under way

The Atlantic County Bar Association 2013 membership drive is under way. With more than 400 members, the ACBA is a nonprofit organization that is open to all New Jersey attorneys.

Scholarship available

The Vincent S. Haneman-Joseph B. Perskie Scholarship is awarded annually to Atlantic County law students who are admitted to an American Bar Association-accredited law school.

Tickets on sale for food event

The organizers of the annual Chefs at the Shore event are making tickets available early specifically for holiday gifts. The 2013 Chefs at the Shore fundraiser is scheduled for 5:30 to 9 p.m. June 20 at Historic Gardner's Basin, Atlantic City.

The event appeals to "foodies" and environmentalists alike, as it showcases some of the area's finest food while it funds educational programming at the Atlantic City Aquarium. Proceeds from the event also are used to fund chef educational programs and scholarships for culinary students for the Professional Chefs Association.

Chefs at the Shore tickets are $60. Guests may purchase a block of 10 for $450. Tickets are available at the Atlantic City Aquarium, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, or by emailing michelle@acaquarium.com or calling 609-348-2880, ext. 25. Sponsorship opportunities also are available, and donations of silent auction and raffle prizes are needed.
