Ranch Hope Auxiliary to meet

Ranch Hope Auxiliary 13 Atlantic County will meet at noon Nov. 27 for a covered dish luncheon at the Asbury Methodist Church, Asbury Ave., in the English Creek section of Egg Harbor Township. The public is invited.

Sweat shirts in sizes large and extra large are being collected for the boys at Ranch Hope, a place for troubled youth in Alloway. Also, $50 gift cards for Shop Rite will be available for purchase as one of our fundraising activities. Members are encouraged to bring prizes in paper bags.

Fundraiser planned for Nov. 24

Local Somers Point businesses and groups are combining efforts to help their local community by having a family-friendly fundraising event from noon to 5 p.m. Nov. 24. Gregory’s Restaurant and Bar, Charlie’s Bar, DreamWave Entertainment and the South Jersey Powder Puff League will run the event that benefits the Community FoodBank of New Jersey, the Southern Shore Chapter of American Red Cross, and local families and charities.

The event will be held simultaneously in two venues, at Gregory’s and Charlie’s Bar in Somers Point. Tickets are $20, which includes entry to both locations and one beverage. Food will include Gregory’s famous tacos and Charlie’s famous wings, along with DJ entertainment at both venues. There will be door prizes and a silent auction, and for the children there will be face painting, henna tattoos, a bounce house, juices or sodas, popcorn, cotton candy and Sponge Bob.

Volunteer workshop planned

The Marine Mammal Stranding Center will host a stranding volunteer workshop at 1 p.m. Dec. 15 at Cape May Point State Park. At the workshop, volunteers interested in becoming “first responders” for stranded marine mammals and sea turtles in New Jersey will be trained by Stranding Center Staff on proper procedures for handling these endangered and protected species.

Race to benefit 9-year-old girl

The race committee for Johnnie’s Run has named Aiyanna Rodriguez as this year’s primary beneficiary of the 14th annual Johnnie’s Run charity event to be held starting at 11:30 a.m. Nov. 25 at Fred and Ethel’s Lantern Light Tavern in Smithville.

Aiyanna is a 9-year-old Mays Landing resident who was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia on July 27. She is a patient of Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia where she has gone through several blood drawings/tests, a medical port insertion, spinal taps and other painful procedures. This year’s event will be dedicated to providing financial assistance and emotional support to Aiyanna and her family.

Johnnie’s Run is an annual 5K and 1 mile fun run named in honor of 18-year-old Johnnie Bieniakowski, who was born with Down syndrome and contracted Lymphocytic Leukemia at the age of 4. The run is held to promote public awareness of children’s leukemia and Down syndrome and to provide financial and moral support to families battling children’s illness. Portions of run proceeds annually go to the Friends of Trisonomy 21 Center, CHOP and the ARC of Atlantic County.

Spay pets for $10

Spaces are available now for State Sterilization Funding Program available to qualified residents. The program begins on Jan. 1 (while funds last) at various participating veterinary offices in the state to help qualified residents spay or neuter their pets for only $10. Because spaces go quickly, Shore Veterinarians is encouraging residents to sign up early for the program. Shore Vets participates in this state program at all four of their locations in Seaville, Williamstown, Hammonton and Egg Harbor Township.

Residents in the state can spay and neuter their pets at various veterinary offices for only $10 if they qualify for the state sterilization funding program. These residents must receive one of the following: food stamps, Medicaid, general public assistance, rental assistance, aid to families with dependent children, Lifeline Utility Credit, Tenants Lifeline Assistance, Supplemental Security Income, or Pharmaceutical Assistance to Aged and Disabled.

Registration for ACCC starts Nov. 26

Registration for both winter and spring sessions at Atlantic Cape Community College will be offered to new and returning students based on the number of credits earned at the time of registration. Credits must have been completed, not in progress. Registration begins at Atlantic Cape: Nov. 26 for students with at least 48 credits; Nov. 27 for students with at least 32 credits; Nov. 28 for students with at least 17 credits; Nov. 29 and 30 for returning students and Dec. 3 for all students

Normal registration hours are weekdays, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with extended hours to 6:30 p.m., Nov. 26 to 29, and Dec. 3. The college will be closed Dec. 24 to Jan. 1.

Winter term classes will be held Mondays to Saturdays, Jan. 2 to 16. Spring semester classes begin Jan. 22. Depending on their status as new or returning students, students can register for spring classes in person or by mail, fax and online through Jan. 21. Toys for Tots needs help

The Cape-Atlantic Marine Corps League has been plagued with obstacles for its annual Toys for Tots campaign and seeks the community’s involvement and the generosity of citizens to acquire and deliver toys to children this holiday season.

Hurricane Sandy destroyed several of the businesses that traditionally volunteered to be drop off locations. Many families lost their homes and possessions, increasing the need for donations for children. Two prominent conventions that historically supply many donated gifts were canceled due to the storm, the New Jersey Teachers Convention and the League of Municipalities. A thief broke into a storage trailer and stole a large quantity of donated gifts. Although a suspect was apprehended and charged with the crime, the toys were not recovered.

Teen writing contest set

Gilda’s Club South Jersey is sponsoring its annual teen writing contest, “It’s Always Something,” for students in the ninth to 12th grades. They are looking for personal essays and poetry. Each writing must be honest and speak to how cancer has affected that teen writer’s life.

All writings must be 500 to 1,000 words, double-spaced. One entry per student. The contest deadline is March 15. Winners will be selected by May 10. Both First Place Essay and Poetry winners will receive an Apple iPadPrizes will also be awarded to second and third place winners in each category

Church moving from Pleasantville to EHT

Ocean Heights Presbyterian Church, formerly the Presbyterian Church of Pleasantville, will officially move on Dec. 2. to its new site at 2116 Ocean Heights Ave. in Egg Harbor Township.

Singers needed

Richard Stockton College is seeking singers to take part in the annual holiday choral performance on Dec. 9.

People of all experience levels are invited to take part. The performance will include works from Handel’s “Judas Maccabaeus” and carols by John Rutter. The Historical Society of Hammonton has announced that the 2012 Holiday House Tour is set for 4:30 to 8 p.m. Dec. 6. The tour begins at the Historical Society of Hammonton’s Museum Located at 333 School Lane.

Medicare info forum set

The last of four free Medicare information forums, originally scheduled for Oct. 30, will take place at 6 p.m. Nov. 27 at the Atlantic County Library System/Egg Harbor Township, 1 Swift Ave.

Representatives from Atlantic County’s State Health Insurance Assistance Program will help Medicare beneficiaries and their family members review and compare plans and make informed choices about which plan is best suited to their needs. Once a year Medicare beneficiaries have an opportunity to select a Medicare Part D prescription drug plan in which to enroll or replace an existing plan. The Medicare open enrollment period ends Dec. 7. Coverage selected during this time becomes effective as of Jan. 1, 2013.

To further help beneficiaries with this process, SHIP counselors are available at 888-426-9243 or 609-645-5965 from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday. Counselors can provide assistance in comparing plans, switching plans and enrolling in a plan, as well as applying for prescription assistance with the State of New Jersey and the Social Security Administration. SHIP counselors provide free, unbiased information to Medicare beneficiaries or their representatives.

Artists wanted for show

The Hammonton Arts Center will host a juried exhibit of fine art at the Hammonton Arts Center Gallery, 219 Bellevue Ave., Hammonton.

The exhibit “Capture the Light” will take place Dec. 11-29. The theme is to exemplify how each artist captures and highlights the light using his or her medium. The exhibit is open to all artists. The artwork must be original and completed within the past three years. Participants may enter as many as three entries and all entries must be for sale. Awards will be given for first place, $75, second place, $50 and third place $25. All work must be framed and ready to hang. Entry fees are $8 per entry for members and $10 for non-members. All work must be hand delivered to the Hammonton Arts Center from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 5 or 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 8.

Dance auditions set

Richard Stockton College has scheduled the annual Audition Days for its dance program at 3:30 p.m. Nov. 30 and Dec. 1 in the Stockton Dance Studio, H-Wing on the campus in Pomona.

Audition Days are for first-year and transfer students interested in majoring or minoring in dance. It is an opportunity for students to learn about the program by taking a class with current students and auditioning for placement into the program. The audition consists of a ballet barre exercise and a modern center. Those who audition and one guest are invited to stay for dinner and a performance of student choreography. Space is limited and reservations, which must be confirmed, are required.

Book donations sought

The Atlantic County Library System is collecting donations of new books for children in the Books for Kids campaign sponsored by the New Jersey Library Association. Donations will be accepted until Dec. 1 during regular library hours.

Started in 1991, Books for Kids is a statewide campaign undertaken by the New Jersey Library Association’s Children’s Services Section with the hope that all children can experience the joy of reading books of their very own. Each year, more than 200 libraries distribute thousands of new books to children throughout the state.

New books for children of all ages are accepted at all Atlantic County Library System locations. Branches are located in Brigantine (which will accept Books for Kids donations upon reopening after flood remediation), Egg Harbor City, Egg Harbor Township, Galloway Township, Hammonton, Longport, Mays Landing, Pleasantville, Somers Point and Ventnor. Churches offer storm aid

Brendon Wilson, the new lead pastor of New Covenant Community Church in Somers Point, has received phone calls from several U.S. churches offering assistance after Sandy.

Gateway Church in South Lake, Texas, has offered to foot the bill for Chance Craven of DRADT (disasterrelief.cc) to come to the area, assess and call for trained volunteers to come help rebuild the lives of those affected by the storm. Along with DRADT is Andrew Bashor of Hopeforce International and Chris Zitzmann of Crisis Response International and their teams. They can help residents clear out flooded homes, gut wallboard, remove small and medium trees with chainsaws, and provide chaplaincy services to those in need.

New Covenant created a webpage, hurricanesandyresponse.com, where donors from all over the country can support these efforts, and Wilson is using this page to challenge his network of pastors and church leaders with the “1 Percent Challenge,” where they donate 1 percent of their Sunday tithe or collect a special offering to donate.

Homeowners in need of debris removal, drywall removal, gutting of a home or furniture removal can call New Covenant Community Church at 609-601-1299 and apply for services. The relief organizations are taking them case by case until a full team of volunteers arrives.

Sandy Relief Fund established for students

The Atlantic Cape Community College Foundation has established the Sandy Relief Fund for Atlantic Cape Students to collect emergency funds for Atlantic Cape Community College students affected by Hurricane Sandy.

More than 1,900 Atlantic Cape students live on the barrier island communities assaulted by the storm on Oct. 29. Student evacuees are now returning to devastating conditions-wrecked homes and vehicles, and destroyed computer equipment, school supplies and textbooks.

The Sandy Relief Fund for Atlantic Cape Students will provide assistance for students who need to replace books, computer equipment, clothing and food, and to cover commuting costs and other necessities. Habitat for Humanity application process open

Habitat for Humanity Atlantic County will hold new homeowner orientations for those interested in Habitat homeownership. Homeowner candidates are strongly encouraged to attend.

Habitat for Humanity Atlantic County is a nonprofit organization that partners with families to provide simple, decent, affordable housing to low income families. Applications may be obtained during the orientations. One more orientation meeting is planned: 10 a.m. Dec. 1, Zion Lutheran Church, 312 Philadelphia Ave., Egg Harbor City.

Qualification checklist for applicants:

Only for first-time homebuyers/homeowners.

Resident of Atlantic County for at least one year.

Inability to secure a conventional home mortgage.

Full disclosure of financial and personal situations, including income, marital status, household composition, debts, etc.

Stable income history: three-year current consecutive work record, SSI, pension, child support, etc.

Willingness to remain in program for 18 months to two years waiting for a home.

Willingness to contribute at least 250 hours of sweat equity per adult members of the household (18 and older).

Willingness to serve on a volunteer committee for at least a year after moving into the home.

Consent to required credit check and background check

Good credit history and willingness to make regular payments on outstanding debts in accordance with a repayment plan.

Positive references from employers, creditors and landlords.

Habitat for Humanity Atlantic County is not a Section 8 rental subsidy program.

College receives awards

Atlantic Cape Community College received five Medallion awards from the National Council for Marketing and Public Relations at the group’s annual District 1 Conference recently in Pittsburgh, Pa.

The college’s new mobile-friendly website received a gold award in the website category. Silver awards went to: Communication Success Story for media coverage received for the Atlantic Cape Restaurant Gala; One-Time Special Event, Publicity on the Academy of Culinary Arts 30th anniversary; and Fundraising/Annual Campaign, communication materials for the Create Opportunity Major Gifts Campaign. A photo taken at Atlantic Cape’s 2012 graduation captured a bronze award in the Original Photography category.

JFS announces donor

Jewish Family Service of Atlantic and Cape May Counties has announced the Horizon Foundation for New Jersey as a Chai Donor.

The foundation awarded JFS a $19,000 grant to support the agency’s Integrated Health Partnerships program, which helps to improve the health-care outcomes of people with chronic disease and severe mental illness. In its initial year, the Integrated Health Partnerships program will work with 20 mental health consumers who have been seen in the emergency room or hospitalized within the past 12 months. Through a partnership with Southern New Jersey Medical Center, the program incorporates individualized case management and in-person contacts to minimize hospitalization, promote disease self-management and increase healthy outcomes, to ultimately reduce the costs associated with medical noncompliance among high-risk patients.

Senior Center open

The Hammonton Community Senior Citizen Center is open for seniors, age 50 and older, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday-Friday and is located in the Canoe Club building off Egg Harbor Road at Park Avenue in Hammonton Lake Park. Recreational activities include card games, a walking group and book club. There are no membership fees or dues. On the third Friday of each month, Atlanticare Regional Medical Center sponsors a free lecture by a health care professional on a subject related directly to senior issues. The talk is followed by a luncheon provided by the Canoe Club Kitchen crew for $3. Bingo is held the fourth Tuesday of each month, followed by a free luncheon.

Professor seeks history info

Richard Stockton College Associate Professor of Art History Kate Ogden is working with the Vineland Historical and Antiquarian Society to research and learn more information about the city’s school of art and local artists.

The Vineland School of Art existed in the 19th century, and not much is known about it — Ogden hopes local residents may shed more light.Ogden’s students in her class on 19th century art are researching and writing about works of art owned by the society and will create a catalog of its many paintings, works of sculpture and other objects.

Free memory screenings available

Visiting Angels and Fox Rehabilitation are encouraging members of the community to be proactive about memory health by taking advantage of free, confidential memory screenings and information about successful aging from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 28 at 331 Tilton Road, Northfield. The event is part of National Memory Screening Month, an annual initiative that the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America holds each November during National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month.

Qualified health care professionals administer the screenings, which consist of a series of questions and tasks, and take five to 10 minutes. Screening results are not a diagnosis, and individuals with below-normal scores or who have concerns are encouraged to pursue a full medical exam.

Certified Home Health Aide for CNAs is designed for the CNA who wants to become a Certified Home Health Aide and meets from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dec. 8 and 15.

Emergency Medical Technician Certification will prepare students to perform basic life support. Participants will learn adult and pediatric medical and trauma assessment, basic airway support, use of AED, assisting patients with medication administration, splinting, bleeding control, lifting, transferring and transporting stretchers and patients. It will take place from 7 to 10:30 p.m. Tuesday and Friday, and 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Saturday, beginning Jan. 29.

Multi-Skill Technician will prepare students to function as EKG and Phlebotomy Technicians. Curriculum includes: anatomy and physiology of the heart, medical terminology, medical disease processes and appropriate treatments, medical ethics. The class will meet from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday, and 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday and Friday, beginning March 4.

In Administrative Healthcare Specialist, participants will learn a variety of administrative duties in the offices of physicians, podiatrists, chiropractors, dentists and other health care facilities. The class will meet from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday to Thursday, and 8 a.m.to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday, beginning March 11.

Lecture and lab modules will take place at the Health Professions Institute at Atlantic Cape’s Worthington Atlantic City Campus, 1535 Bacharach Blvd. Clinical expertise will come from various hospital settings and students will also gain field experience on paramedic units.

Black and White Ball set for Dec. 15

Generations of residents and friends of the Simon and Sylvia Zisman Seashore Gardens Living Center will be represented at the inaugural Black and White Ball on Dec. 15 at Resorts Casino Hotel in Atlantic City.

Hosted by the Seashore Gardens Foundation, tickets are $250 each and sponsor tables can be purchased for $3,500 and $5,000. Black and white attire is requested for the black tie-required event. Complimentary valet parking and a special room rate are offered by Resorts.

Turkey drive under way

Jewish Family Service of Atlantic and Cape May Counties is holding its annual Holiday Turkey Drive to provide families with turkeys and trimmings throughout the holiday season. With Thanksgiving quickly approaching, JFS will collect monetary donations to purchase turkeys for members of the community in need.

Ways to help include making a donation of $25 or more to purchase a Butterball turkey or kosher turkey (upon request). This gives an individual or family a turkey certificate that can be used to purchase a holiday turkey, plus the holiday trimmings. You can also make a donation of canned goods. Stuffing, canned corn, cranberry sauce and other side dishes are perfect to complete the holiday meal. JFS also encourages donations of peanut butter, tuna fish, soups, pasta and cereals to use throughout the year. Ocean City Home Bank has food dropoff locations in Egg Harbor Township, Linwood, Margate, Northfield and Ventnor through mid-November.

Golden Cotillion planned

The National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, Inc. Iota Chapter will introduce a Golden Cotillion in the spring of 2013.

The Golden Cotillion, “Lovelier the Second Time Around, will feature women 60 and older. It will provide an opportunity for mature ladies to experience relevant workshops and an evening of dining, dancing and fun. Ladies are sought to participate. A sponsorship fee will be required. Sponsors may be individuals, civic organizations, social clubs, or churches. The National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, Inc. Iota Chapter has been the sponsor of the Debutante Cotillion for high school seniors for more than 50 years. The benefits of this cotillion have enabled the chapter presenting scholarships each of these years. The two cotillions will continue to benefit Iota’s Scholarship Fund and the sorority’s Youth Programs.

Free trees offered

Atlantic City Electric is providing 3,000 free trees to customers through Energy-Saving Trees, an Arbor Day Foundation program that helps conserve energy and reduce energy bills through strategic tree planting. Atlantic City Electric customers can reserve their free trees at arborday.org/Atlantictrees.

An online tool helps customers estimate the annual energy savings that will result from planting trees in the most strategic location near their homes or businesses. Customers can reserve as many as two trees and are expected to care for and plant them in the location provided by the online tool. Trees offered include Washington hawthorn, white dogwood, bald cypress, American beech, hackberry, river birch and sugar maple.

The program will continue until all 3,000 trees are reserved. The 2- to 4-foot tall trees will be delivered directly to customers at an ideal time for planting.

Coat, food drive under way

Be an Angel is collecting much needed nonperishable goods for the South Jersey Food Bank, and coats from infants through adult sizes for the Atlantic City Rescue Mission.

College to host foodie programs

Richard Stockton College will host a fun and educational “Foodie Tuesdays” program Dec. 18 at the Hammonton Arts Center, 219 Bellevue Ave. The program includes a seminar and discussion, followed by a light dinner related to the discussion at Annata’s Wine Bar across the street.

College offers discussions

Richard Stockton College’s Office of Service Learning will host a series of topical “Headliners” discussions at the college in Pomona on Friday afternoons.

The series will feature weekly topics plucked straight from the news media every Monday morning. A question board will then be placed outside the Office of Service-Learning on Mondays and in various food courts on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Finally, the topic will be discussed at length every Friday afternoon.

Nursery school registration under way

Congregation Beth Israel Nursery School is accepting enrollment for the 2012-13 school year, with extended hours for “Before Care.” Parents now may drop off children as early as 7:30 a.m. Extended “After Care” also is available until 5 p.m. Monday-Thursday and until 4:30 p.m. Friday.

Congregation Beth Israel’s Nursery School accepts children ages 2 to 5, with flexible days and times. Kindergarten enrichment is available for half-day programs. Program set for families with young children

Congregation Beth Judah in Ventnor has opened Mishpacha and Me (Family and Me). The program was created specifically for families with young children to age 4. Families will meet monthly on Sunday mornings to learn about Jewish holidays, sing songs, hear a story and create a special craft.

School registering students

The Kulanu School of Jewish Studies is registering students in grades seven through 11 for the 2012-13 school year. This year, Kulanu classes will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays at Congregation Beth Judah, 700 Swarthmore Ave., Ventnor.

Students do not need to be affiliated with a synagogue to attend. The Kulanu School of Jewish Studies offers a wide range of programs. Classes cover topics from Jewish ethics to culture, history, spirituality and the arts. Programs also foster a lifelong connection to the land of Israel. Electives offered range from Israeli dance to choir, yoga, art, Jewish cooking and Jews in American Film. There also is an optional Panim el Panim program, which brings Jewish teens to Washington, D.C., to explore service, advocacy and philanthropy. In addition, students entering their senior year of high school may attend the Morim Teacher Prep program through Kulanu.

Family readiness group formed

The 150th/160th Engineer Company, New Jersey Army National Guard unit out of Hammonton has officially formed a Family Readiness Group to support the soldiers and families within the unit. An evening support group is being formed in the Atlantic County area for residents with lung and related pulmonary disease in need of camaraderie and friendship.

Parent-child swim classes at Katz JCC

Families are invited to come for the LKSA Parent Tot class — and stay to play and mix and mingle.

On Fridays, swim from 11:30 a.m. to noon and play from noon to 1:30 p.m. Working as a group and individually, the class uses songs and simple drills to acclimate the child to the aquatic environment. This program begins the journey to water safety with the introduction of back-float survival skills. After the pool is playtime for children and socializing time for adults. Therapeutic riding program accepting riders

A therapeutic horseback riding program in Egg Harbor Township is accepting riders.

HEARTS TRC, LLC, is a NARHA/PATH member center providing therapeutic assisted equine activities. Sue Adams has created a new curriculum, “From the Ground Up,” exclusive to HEARTS TRC, which brings new and skills to all of its riders. Adams and the HEARTS TRC partners have more than 50 years of combined experience working with children and adults who are challenged physically, mentally, psychologically and socially. They also are experienced teaching riders without disabilities. Sessions cover care of the horse, equine anatomy, psychology of the horse, and training techniques. Techniques to be introduced also include equine massage and healing through touch, to relieve stress, pain, and create relaxation within the horse.

Food bank also needs baby items

The Emergency Assistance Pantry at the Community FoodBank of New Jersey-Southern Branch, is in need of baby formula and disposable diapers for its clients. The Community FoodBank of New Jersey, Southern Branch, serves Atlantic, Cape May, Cumberland and southern Burlington counties. The FoodBank has seen a 60 percent increase in need since 2008.

Mental Health Association reaching out to veterans

The Mental Health Association in Atlantic County, or MHAAC, is reaching out to OIF/OEF military veterans through a self-help group called MHAAC Veterans Network. It’s all about veterans helping other veterans through a member-run group process. In addition to MHAAC traditional services, this veterans group will offer education, advocacy and support.

While this group was formed to exclusively address the special needs of Atlantic County’s Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom military veterans and their families, other veterans groups also are planned. MHAAC, in conjunction with Richard Stockton College undergraduate and graduate social work programs are planning to hold meetings for Vietnam era, post 9-11, and Korean War veterans as well as topics addressing issues such as HIV and hepatitis C among veterans.
