Beth Israel offers family service

Congregation Beth Israel will offer a Young Children’s Family Service for Rosh Hashanah on Sept. 5 from 3 to 3:30 p.m. at the Huntington Avenue Beach in Margate.

This age-appropriate service, led by Rabbi David M. Weis, is especially suited to toddlers and children to age 6. The service includes stories and songs for the holiday, and children receive their own plastic shofars. Parents are welcome to bring their family shofars. Dress is casual. Families may wish to bring towels or chairs. At 3:30 p.m., the congregation will gather for Tashlich services at the same location. The custom is to gather at a body of water and cast away one’s sins, in the form of pieces of bread. Families should bring their own bread, and are welcome to bring their shofars.

Tickets now on sale for RemArcAble Raffle

Five winners of The Arc of Atlantic County’s RemArcAble Raffle will be drawn on Sept. 21 at the I. Rice and Co. Golfing for Good Tournament, benefiting The Arc’s Recreation Program for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Prizes include a trip to San Francisco with round-trip airfare and hotel accommodations; a $1,000 American Express gift card; a weekend stay at Tropicana Casino and Resort in Atlantic City with spa package and dinner for two; a restaurant gift certificate package featuring Chef Vola’s, The Palm, The Continental, and Ventura’s Greenhouse; and an iPad Mini. The RemArcAble Raffle was added to the Golfing for Good Tournament, now in its fifth year, in 2011 to help boost proceeds from the event.  The tournament was founded by local golfers Irv Singer and Steve Kuhl, who wanted to make a difference through their favorite pastime. They selected The Arc as a beneficiary because of its comprehensive services that include a golf program for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Since its inception, the tournament and raffle have raised a combined total of nearly $150,000 to benefit The Arc’s recreation program.

Youths join in Explorer Academy

The fourth annual Atlantic County Law Enforcement Explorer Academy took place recently, with the Culmination Ceremony on Aug. 30 at the Egg Harbor Township Community Center.

Law Enforcement Explorers is for youths of both genders ages 14-21 who express an interest in law enforcement.  The work-based program gives youths hands-on experience with the daily operations of a law enforcement agency.

A total of 16 Explorers — six from Atlantic County Sheriff’s Office Explorer Post No. 29, eight from Egg Harbor Township Police Explorer Post No. 94 and two from Cape May County Sheriff’s Office Explorer Post No. 1692 — attended the weeklong academy. They learned about subjects including state criminal and motor vehicle statutes, traffic control, event parking, search and handcuffing and tactical training, and practiced marching steps and drill functions. They did physical training that they would undergo in basic training in the police academy. The lead officers who put the academy together were Atlantic County Sheriff’s Officer Darren Aberman and Egg Harbor Township Police Officer Rich Vogt.

Scholarship program launched

Bob’s Discount Furniture and the American Red Cross launched the High School Heroes Scholarship Program during the New York Giants’ third annual American Red Cross blood drive Aug. 25.

This program will give high school students in New York and New Jersey the opportunity to compete with other schools during the 2013-14 school year for a share of $250,000 in scholarship money. The High School Heroes program honors students who make exceptional contributions to the American Red Cross blood donor program in their schools, and helps encourage young people to become involved by helping patients in need.

Students who host at least two high school blood drives through the year and achieve an annual participation rate of at least 30 percent of their school’s age-eligible students are qualified to win a base scholarship of $250. Students who meet those initial requirements are also eligible to win additional scholarships, including as many as eight $1,000 grand prize scholarships per winning school. The winners in each state are determined by the number of students who donate and the total units collected.

Zumbathon to benefit Special Services

A Zumbathon from noon to 4 p.m. Sept. 7 at Retro Fitness on Tilton Road in Northfield will raise money for the Atlantic County Special Services School District.

The event is organized by the Malc family, of Egg Harbor Township, in honor of their little boy, Logan, a 6-year-old student at the school. Logan was born with quadriplegic spastic cerebral palsy, and school staff have provided him with a loving and stimulating environment. The family would like to show their appreciation with a fundraising event.

Big Sarge, of Big Sarge Fitness, has donated his Zumba expertise to keep the crowd jumping. Donations are $10 per Zumba hour.

Jaffe exhibit is on

Art show to include interactive artists

The Atlantic City Arts Commission and the Noyes Museum of Art of Richard Stockton College announces the participation of interactive artists in the Atlantic City Boardwalk Art Show, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 7 on the Atlantic City Boardwalk at Kennedy Plaza across from Boardwalk Hall.

The artists include Edward Peahota, of Washington Township, who paints fast and to the beat of music; Shaun Edwards, a graffiti artist who grew up on the Barnegat Bay but remembers always seeing the lights of Atlantic City at night; and Heather Hires, a face and body painter. Dog obedience classes offered

NAMI (National Alliance for Mental Illness) Atlantic County is sponsoring a Family to Family Education Course for those who have loved ones with mental illness.

Stockton to host Pinelands Short Course

The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey will host the 25th annual Pinelands Short Course on March 8, 2014, a daylong educational event that explores the unique ecology, culture and history of New Jersey’s Pinelands.

The course is open to the public and includes sessions on topics such as wildlife, plants, land-use/recreation and history and culture. Non-profit organizations and other groups may distribute information and sell Pinelands-themed books and artwork in an exhibition gallery. New Jersey educators who attend can earn professional development credits through the state Department of Education. The course will take place in Stockton’s Campus Center and in the new Unified Science Center, set to open this fall.

Church offers water communion service, picnic

The Unitarian Universalist Congregation of the South Jersey Shore will hold a water communion service followed by family picnic with a veggie burger cook-off Sept. 8. at the UU Center, 75 S. Pomona Road at the corner of Liebig Street, Galloway Township. The service starts at 10 a.m., and the picnic will begin about 11:30 a.m.

UUCSJS has joined other faith communities in New Jersey in working toward the GreenFaith Water Shield, a national designation signifying that a faith-based institution has taken educational, spiritual and practical steps to conserve water, protect water quality and mobilize its members and community to do the same. GreenFaith is a New Jersey-based interfaith coalition for the environment founded in 1992. The Rev. Charlie Dieterich will preside over the annual water communion ceremony, which will celebrate water and its central place in our lives by inviting individuals and families to add to a large bowl a sample of water from recent travels and to share the significance of the water in their life journey. Beth Judah to hold experiential Rosh Hashadah service

Congregation Beth Judah in Ventnor will hold an experiential Rosh Hashanah service Sept. 6. Rabbi Aaron Gaber and Hazzan Jeffrey Myers will lead an experimental and experiential Musaf service that includes dramatic readings, congregational singing and a more concise format. All congregational elements will be transliterated, and there is more English included.

The only requirement is an open mind to experiment in what could be the most moving and inspirational moments of the High Holiday season. The second day of Rosh Hashanah begins at 8:30 a.m. Sept. 6. Shoreman Half Distance Triathlon set for Sept. 7

The third annual Shoreman Half Distance Triathlon and Aquabike is scheduled to start at 7 a.m. Sept. 7 at Harry Bowen Memorial Park in Port Republic. Race-day signups are available.

Last year’s race drew 400 athletes from around the tri-state area. The 1.2 mile swim starts and finishes at the Port Republic Beach area. The 56-mile bike takes athletes through a portion of Galloway Township, Egg Harbor City, Mullica Township and back to Port Republic. The 13.1 run is all within the borders of Port Republic. Motorists can expect delays if traveling through town on race day. Packet pickup is between 3 and 7 p.m. Sept. 6 at Fred and Ethel’s Lantern Light Inn in Historic Smithville.

Atlantic Audubon offers teacher resources

Atlantic Audubon is offering the National Audubon Society’s award-winning nature education program, Audubon Adventures, free to interested teachers in Atlantic County.

This program, written at a fifth-grade reading level, is intended for use by third- through sixth-graders. Audubon Adventures meets national language arts and science standards. Four Audubon Adventures student newspapers (32 copies each) for students are accompanied by a resource manual for the teacher, including detailed lesson plans, tips for outdoor study, hands-on activities, and student assessment tools. This year’s series, “Sharing Our World with Birds,” includes: Regal Raptors, Hooray for Hummingbirds, Sensational Seabirds, and Caring for our Planet-Find Your Passion, Get Involved.

AARP driver safety training set

The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey’s Center on Successful Aging is hosting an AARP Driver Safety Training Program from 9 a.m. to noon Sept. 10 and 12.

Drivers who take the course will learn defensive driving techniques, the current rules of the road and how to manage age-related changes in vision, hearing and reaction time. New Jersey offers auto insurance discounts for successful completion of the course, which costs $12 for AARP members and $14 for non-members, payable by check on the first day of class. Participants must complete the full course to receive a certificate and be eligible for insurance discounts; contact one’s insurance agent for details.

JCC presents fall author series

The Milton and Betty Katz Jewish Community Center of Margate in partnership with the Jewish Times and the Jewish Federation of Atlantic and Cape May Counties presents its Fall Author Lecture Series featuring topics surrounding politics and Israel, and will be held in the Katz JCC Auditorium, 501 N. 7 p.m. Sept. 12, Professor Robert P. Watson, Ph.D., who will discuss his book “Truman and Israel,” the story of the politics and personalities behind statehood in 1948.

7 p.m. Oct. 23, Professor Mark A. Stoler, Ph.D., who will discuss his book “George S. Marshall and the Creation of Israel,” with a look into some of the most controversial of Marshall’s acts as secretary of state from 1947 to 1949 that concerned the 1947 partition of Palestine and the 1948 recognition of Israel.

‘Ask the Hair Weaving Experts’ lunch and demo set

Gilda’s Club invites caregivers and people dealing with hair loss to a free lunch and demonstration by the staff of Jonell’s Weaving Salon.

“Ask the Hair Weaving Experts” will take place Sept. 10 at the Gilda’s Club satellite office, 2500 English Creek Ave., Building 400, second floor, in Egg Harbor Township.

The 45-minute session will take place at 10:30 a.m. and again at 11:30 a.m., and will be led by Emily Mahan, former owner of Salon Shampu of Egg Harbor City and Hammonton. With 30 years in the beauty industry, Mahan has extensive experience with extensions and custom wigs for cancer patients. The program, sponsored by Jonell’s Weaving Salon in Egg Harbor Towmship, will address hair loss from cancer and other conditions such as alopecia. The owners of Jonell’s, siblings Tanesha Purnell and Ricardo Jones, learned firsthand about hair loss when their mother was found to have alopecia in her 20s. After creative hairstyling couldn’t hide the damage, she rarely left the house. That was the inspiration for Tanesha to specialize in hair restoration through hair extensions. No hair is needed in order to wear hair extensions. Hair extensions that are done for medical reasons may be reimbursed through insurance.

Training offered for literacy volunteers

Literacy Volunteers Association Cape-Atlantic Inc. is a volunteer-driven adult literacy provider that trains and supports people who wish to help improve the literacy skills in their community.

Volunteers receive 15 hours of instruction in teaching basic literacy (reading and writing) and conversational English. They provide educational services to adults free of charge and at a time and location (usually the library) convenient to both student and tutor. Once matched with a student, volunteer tutors offer reading, writing, job-preparedness, conversational English and survival skills instruction. Tutors also serve as mentors and role models for adults as they work toward achieving their educational and personal goals. LVA-CA has scheduled two upcoming training workshops:

Sunday school set at Beth El

Beth El Synagogue’s new Sunday school for ages 5-7 begins at 10 a.m. Sept. 15.

The teacher is author and illustrator Connie Steiner, who has written such books as “Shoes for Amelie.” Steiner received her BFA from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. Her curriculum will include studying the Bible and Jewish holidays, along with art and other activities. Enrollment can occur even after the school starting date.

Le Tour de Downbeach set

Le Tour de Downbeach, the annual family friendly fundraising bike ride and barbecue that covers Absecon Island communities, happens Sept. 8 (rain date Sept. 15) at 9:30 a.m. All riders must wear helmets.

The event is sponsored by Tomatoes Restaurant and presented by the Ventnor Merchants Association, the Margate Business Association, the Borough of Longport and Atlantic City. Le Tour begins at 9:30 a.m. with registration and refreshments at the Boardwalk and Newport Avenue in Ventnor. All rides begin there at 10 a.m. and end at Tomatoe’s at Amherst and Washington Avenues in Margate with live music and a barbecue bash. Participants enjoy a 14-mile ride with a turnaround at Showboat, on to the Point in Longport, then ending at Tomatoes for the barbecue with music, games and more. Lunch is open to all participants.

County earns award for dental program

Atlantic County government recently was recognized with the President’s Award by the National Association of Counties and Careington International Corp. for its success in implementing the Dental Discount Program, having obtained the highest number of members among 70 counties currently participating across the country.

Through its membership in NACo, Atlantic County introduced the program to its residents two years ago to help families save money on dental care, orthodontic treatment and other dental services. The Dental Discount Program is not insurance. Anyone may join and there are no age or income restrictions. Beth Judah offers Sunday school, more

Congregation Beth Judah has announced registration for its preschool, Sunday school and religious school for the 2013-14 year.

The preschool recently received a license from the state to welcome children 1 year and older. Atlantic Cape to offer training in geospatial technology

This fall, Atlantic Cape Community College will offer Geospatial Technician Certification, a new training program in one a fast-growing career fields.

Geospatial Technician Certification will meet 6-9 p.m., Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning Oct. 7 at the Mays Landing Campus, Building T, 5100 Black Horse Pike. The course follows the STARS curriculum series, designed to teach and assess a student’s level of competence in the geospatial skill set required by the geospatial industry to become employed in the field. With a 15 percent growth in new jobs projected over the next decade, this course is designed for professionals working in homeland security, law enforcement, economic development, land developers, land surveyors, military science, engineering, public safety, real estate, municipality professionals, GIS/RS-related professionals, and anyone interested in entering the geospatial field.

Right Notes fundraiser set for Oct. 17

The Right Notes, a wine- and jazz-themed fundraiser benefiting the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and the Somers Point Jazz Society, will take place starting at 7 p.m. Oct. 17 at Greate Bay Country Club in Somers Point.

Prior to the start, guests are invited to participate in an afternoon golf session at Greate Bay. The golf portion starts at 12:30 p.m. and is limited to 80 golfers. Guests will enjoy a non-scoring competition with shotgun start, and prizes for closest to the pin and longest drive (male and female). Presentations offer Sandy recovery assistance

Atlantic County is hosting a series of free presentations on Hurricane Sandy by NJ Hope and Healing.

Small Sandy Survivors is an innovative children’s workshop developed by trained crisis counselors who recognized the need for children to process why such storms occur, their feelings throughout the storm, and the long-term impacts of such storms on individuals, families and communities. Children whose homes were not directly impacted by Superstorm Sandy may still have had to deal with displaced relatives, friends and neighbors, as well as losses within their communities or favorite shore landmarks. Small Sandy Survivors will be presented from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Sept. 7, 21 and Oct. 5, 19 at the Atlantic County Park Nature Center, 109 Route 50, Estell Manor.

Hurricane Planning and Recovery is an adult educational workshop that stresses the importance of preparation for all types of emergencies. It also includes means to manage stress and cope with emotions. Counselors encourage participants to share their experiences, ask questions and offer ideas. Hurricane Planning and Recovery will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Sept. 14, 28 and Oct. 12 at the Atlantic County Park Nature Center, 109 Route 50, Estell Manor.

CERT seeking volunteers

The Atlantic County Community Emergency Response Team is accepting volunteer members who are interested in receiving education and training in disaster preparedness and response to help supplement and support emergency personnel.

CERT members learn basic safety skills to help keep themselves, their families and their neighborhoods safer in the event of an emergency. CERT members may provide care, stabilization and information following an event when first responders are not immediately available as well as assistance at emergency operation centers and evacuation shelters. The Atlantic County CERT was formed in 2004 and has trained about 400 people 18 and older. The next series of classes begins Sept. 21. Classes run 8 a.m.-noon for seven consecutive Saturdays through Nov. 2 at the Atlantic County Anthony “Tony” Canale Training Center, 5033 English Creek Ave., Egg Harbor Township. Noyes in Hammonton to hold Figure Affair

The Noyes Museum of Art of Stockton College will hold Figure Affair: A Figure Drawing and Painting Marathon from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 14 at the Noyes Studios, located at 15 Horton St. in Hammonton.

Gather with professional and novice artists to take part in an enjoyable day of self-guided life drawing. Artists are welcome to draw or paint in any media. This event will consist of two segments, the first with individual model poses and the second with a group pose. Models will be both nude and costumed. Models’ costumes will be 1920s inspired to complement Hammonton’s September Third Thursday event, “Bellevue Empire.” Select artwork completed during Figure Affair will be included in a group show at the Noyes Studios on Third Thursday, 6 to 9 p.m. Sept. 19.

Figure Affair will give artists a total of six hours of drawing time, with an hour break. The first three hours will consist of models doing warm-up poses, followed by a long pose. There will be an hour lunch break for artists at 1 p.m. Drawing will resume at 2 p.m. A group pose, with models in costumes, will fill the remainder of the day. Artists are to bring their own drawing or painting media and encouraged to bring their own easels; several studio easels are available to artists on a first-come, first-served basis. Jewelry-making classes are now forming at the Ventnor City Cultural Arts Center, 6500 Atlantic Ave.

Registration open for religious classes

Congregation Beth Israel religious school is debuting a new integrated program of Hebrew and Judaic studies for kindergarten through sixth grade. The program combines the study of prayer book-based Hebrew with Jewish history, holidays and customs, worship services and parent participation.

Religious school sessions will be held Sundays from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. for grades 3-6. Classes for K-2 will take place 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. with aftercare available. Rosenberg bike ride to benefit JFS

The sixth annual Marc L. Rosenberg Friends and Family Bike Ride will take place Sept. 7 (rain date Sept. 8).

Beginning in Margate at 10 a.m., this 30-mile ride remembers Marc Rosenberg, a life-long resident of Margate and a business and community leader. This is the first year the Margate to Strathmere round trip ride has been opened to the public. Riders are asked to donate at least $25 to Jewish Family Service to participate. Each registered rider receives a complimentary T-shirt. The bike ride takes about 75 minutes each way, with many participants choosing to enjoy lunch on their own at the turnaround point, the Deauville Inn.

Steve and Cookie’s Dog Show set for Sept. 29

The 17th annual Steve and Cookie’s Dog Show and Contest will be held Sept. 29 in conjunction with Margate’s Fall Funfest. Combining philanthropy and fun, the show and contest will be held at 1 p.m. in the parking lot of Steve and Cookie’s By the Bay at 9700 Amherst Ave. (corner of Amherst and Monroe avenues) in Margate.

On-site registration for the contest is from 10:30 am to 12:30 p.m. The contest will award prizes in four categories: Fashionista Dog (large and small dog), Owner That Most Resembles Dog (large and small dog), Most Handsome / Pretty Dog (large and small dog), and Most Talented Dog (one size fits all). Registration fee is $20 per category per dog. Each entrant will be given an official event T-shirt and a doggie gift bag. Winners will receive gift certificates to Steve and Cookie’s restaurant.

The Stockton Center on Successful Aging of Richard Stockton College is hosting an AARP Driver Safety Training Program 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Sept. 10 and 12 at the Absecon Community Center for Seniors in the Great Hall of the United Methodist Church at 100 Pitney Road in Absecon.

Drivers who take the course will learn defensive driving techniques, the current rules of the road and how to manage age-related changes in vision, hearing and reaction time. New Jersey offers auto insurance discounts for successful completion of the course, which costs $12 for AARP members and $14 for nonmembers, payable by check on the first day of class. Atlantic Cape offers programs for health professionals

The Health Professions Institute at Atlantic Cape Community College offers online programs to help health care professionals advance their skills.

ICD-10 Medical Coding offers students comprehensive training in diagnostic and procedural coding and using the ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS coding manuals. The course includes detailed instructions for using the coding manuals, understanding the coding guidelines and accurately applying the ICD-10 coding steps. Textbooks are included.

Medical Transcription teaches the beginning knowledge of the transcription of medical records. Textbooks and transcription equipment are included.

Pharmacy Technician prepares students for entry-level pharmacy technician positions. Coursework includes medical and pharmaceutical terminology, basic anatomy related to the pharmacology of medications, and pharmaceutical calculations. Students will be required to perform clinical rotations.

Atlantic Cape workshops address health info

Atlantic Cape Community College will offer free workshops for medical professionals about understanding new health information technology, including Electronic Health Records, ICD-10 and Personal Health Records.

The New Jersey Community College Consortium for Workforce and Economic Development and the 19 community colleges, in partnership with the New Jersey Hospital Association and New Jersey Health Information Technology Extension Center, through a Skills4Jersey grant from the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development, are delivering Health Information Technology Overview Workshops on the topics of Electronic Health Records, Personal Health Records and/or ICD-10 to the medical community.

The four-hour workshops cover the new federal regulations requiring the transition from paper records to EHRs, patient health literacy and privacy, and switching from ICD-9 to ICD-10 codes by Oct. 1, 2014.

Walk for Wounded set for Sept. 28

On Sept. 28, Ocean City Home Bank and Operation First Response will present the fifth annual Walk for the Wounded. Registration takes place at the Ocean City Music Pier at 8:30 a.m., and the three-mile Walk on the Boardwalk begins at 10 a.m.

Four years have passed since Ocean City Home Bank President Steve Brady offered to organize the event. The first walk took place in fall 2009, and it has been held each year after, raising more than $200,000 for Operation First Response, a nonprofit organization that provides financial assistance to injured soldiers and their families. Ocean City firefighters again have pledged to support the event, planning to sell stickers and T-shirts to raise money for the walk. In addition, Mainland Regional High School’s Support Our Troops club has set a fundraising goal of $10,000.

Walk for the Wounded raises funds for Operation First Response through pledges solicited by individual walkers and teams of walkers, as well as event sponsorships and fees for advertisements in the event’s dedication booklet. All proceeds benefit Operation First Response, a national 501c(3) nonprofit organization. Of every dollar raised for Operation First Response, 90 cents is donated to wounded soldiers and their families in times of crisis.

Grant applications for fiscal year 2014 arts and history projects are now available online through the Atlantic County Office of Cultural and Heritage Affairs.

Nonprofit organizations in Atlantic County may apply to participate in this competitive grant process at aclink.org/culturalaffairs. Call for photos for Noyes’ ‘Raw’ exhibit

The Noyes Museum of Art of Stockton College has announced an open call for photographs for “Raw,” its second annual juried photography competition and exhibition. the top 40 images will be selected by a juror for a group exhibition Nov. 7-Jan. 31 at the Noyes Gallery at Kramer Hall in Hammonton.

In keeping with the museum’s love for New Jersey’s natural features, images pertaining to New Jersey’s raw splendor and spirit that capture the beauty and diversity of New Jersey’s landscape, people, animals, water and nature are desired. Images in any photographic process are eligible for submission. Any image submitted must have been taken within the past three years. This year’s juror is Markam Keith Adams, assistant professor of photography at Rowan University.

There is a $25 submission fee for as many as five images; $6 for each additional image. Valid entries must include a completed application form and submission fee, and be submitted as digital files on a CD; no email submissions accepted. Entries must be submitted in the JPEG format and must be 72 ppi, image width not to exceed 1024 pixels on the longest side. Files should be titled as follows: LastName_FirstName_1Title.jpg. NAMI offers classes

The National Alliance on Mental Illness of Atlantic and Cape May counties will again offer its Family-to-Family Education Program specifically for people who have a loved one with a serious mental illness.

The 12-week series of classes will begin Sept. 10 and will be held at the Jordan Road Elementary School in Somers Point from 7 to 9:30 p.m. The course will cover information about schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depression, panic disorder, and obsessive compulsive disorder.

Homemade wine competition planned

The public is welcomed to participate in an amateur homemade wine competition during the third annual Waterfront Wine and Food Festival, which will take place noon to 5 p.m. Oct. 19 and 20 at Lake Lenape Park.

Red wines will be judged Oct. 19 and white wines on Oct. 20 based on a variety of characteristics. Wine bottles may be delivered by 11:30 a.m. on the day of the event. Entries should be in a 750ml bottle labeled with winemaker’s name and wine class. Participants must be at least 21 years of age and not be employed or a family member of any operating winery.

Entries will be judged by the South Jersey Wineries at the event. There is a $15 entry fee and applications are due by Oct. 12. Gold, silver and bronze medals will be awarded, along with bragging rights. There will be a best-in-show medal for the overall competition. Medical reserve corps calls for volunteers

The Atlantic County Medical Reserve Corps consists of volunteers who may be called upon during an emergency to assist the Atlantic County Division of Public Health and its emergency partners. The MRC invites any licensed or certified health care professional, practicing or retired, living or working in Atlantic County, and other community volunteers to apply for membership. Applicants must be at least 18 years old and a U.S. citizen.

During a public health emergency, MRC volunteers are called on to help protect the safety and well-being of their fellow citizens. It may be necessary to open large scale clinics or Points of Distribution sites to distribute antibiotics or provide vaccinations to prevent people from becoming ill. These sites require greeters, translators, child-care workers, clergy and religious leaders, customer service attendants, information technology assistance, food support/canteen service and general helpers, as well as licensed medical personnel.

The Atlantic County MRC meets quarterly. New members attend a three-session orientation that includes training on personal preparedness, pandemic influenza, personal protective equipment, POD operations, and the role of the MRC. Members can receive additional training in the Incident Command System, CPR, psychological first aid, and call center operations. MRC volunteers are encouraged to participate in readiness exercises and may have opportunities to interact with volunteers serving on the Atlantic County Community Emergency Response Team.

Grants cover arthritis pool classes at Bacharach

Seniors 60 and older who live in Atlantic County, have a doctor’s diagnosis of arthritis, and are eligible for Medicaid, the PAAD program or Senior Gold, may apply for an Arthritis Foundation Aquatic Program grant offered by the County Division of Intergenerational Services.

The Arthritis Foundation Aquatic Program is a gentle exercise program for seniors. Classes encourage flexibility, increase range of motion and promote circulation. The class meets Tuesdays or Thursdays from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. in the heated therapy pool at Bacharach in Pomona. The grant covers the cost of 10 classes (10 weeks) for eligible participants. After completing the grant, participants are welcome to self-pay for the program at $100 for 10 classes. Participants must provide their own transportation.

Stockton PRSSA open for business

The National Public Relation Student Society of America organization in May accepted the request of Richard Stockton College of New Jersey students for national acceptance into the organization. The students have decided to name their chapter after their founding adviser, Dr. Ai Zhang.

The PRSSA is a national organization that gives public relations students networking opportunities and professional experience as they work with local businesses. The local chapter’s students are reaching out to local businesses to do public relations work for them. This would include events, fundraisers, writing press releases and using contacts to help improve the overall image of that business. This work will also help students of the organization gain hands-on experience in the public relations field.

School supply drive under way

A national school supply drive will benefit the Boys and Girls Clubs of Atlantic City and Vineland and the Lakehurst Navy Youth Center.

The Boys and Girls Clubs of America and Staples are teaming up with teen actor Jake T. Austin for the Staples for Students National School Supply Drive for kids in need. Until Sept. 28, customers can donate $1 or more at their local Staples store with 100 percent of the proceeds benefiting local students. All donations will be given locally to the Boys and Girls Club of Atlantic City and Vineland and the Lakehurst Navy Youth Center to ensure they get into the hands of disadvantaged youth just in time for the new school year. Donovan wine dinner set for October

The Community Partnership for Egg Harbor Township Schools, Inc., will host the fourth annual Friends of Chuck Donovan Gourmet Wine Dinner and Auction at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 18, at the private and prestigious Hidden Creek Golf Club in Egg Harbor Township, where Donovan was a long-time member. The event is a fitting tribute to Donovan, who had a great love, appreciation and knowledge of good wine.

As an active member of the Community Partnership from 2007 to 2009, Donovan, who died in 2009, championed efforts to raise funds for academic enhancements, technology, capital projects and extracurricular activities. He was also very involved with the EHT High School Interact Club, mentoring students for many years, and serving as their point person linking them to the local finance and businesses community and helping to secure employment, mentorship and/or internship opportunities for students.

The Health Professions Institute at Atlantic Cape Community College will offer programs to train people interested in a health care career.

In Phlebotomy Technician, students will learn blood collection techniques, handling, transporting and processing blood specimens through practice on artificial arms and extensive clinical experience at area medical facilities, beginning Sept. 16.

FoodBank needs volunteers

Volunteers with data entry and good interpersonal and multitasking skills are needed to help the FoodBank with registration in its onsite pantry. The group is also looking for help in bagging and boxing food for pantry clients, stocking shelves, sorting food and grocery donations and assisting pantry clients in both its onsite and mobile pantries. Other volunteer opportunities include sweeping, mopping, recycling and general cleaning. They are also looking for folks with a green thumb to help with our community garden as well as help with beautification of the FoodBank property.

Individuals, small groups and families are welcome. The Community FoodBank of New Jersey is located at 6735 Black Horse Pike in Egg Harbor Township and is open Monday through Saturday. Additionally, help is needed at Kathleen’s Closet Thrift Shop to assist customers, sort, stock shelves and price merchandise and work the register. The shop is located at the Festival at Hamilton in Mays Landing and is open 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

VFW accepting essays for scholarship contest

Atlantic County-based Veterans of Foreign Wars District 16 is accepting entries for its VFW and Ladies Auxiliary Voice of Democracy scholarship competition, for which local high school students have the opportunity to compete for thousands of dollars and scholarships and a trip to Washington, D.C.

The program is open to students in ninth through 12th grades. Students must write and make an audio recording of an essay between three and five minutes in length expressing their views on the theme of “Why I’m optimistic about our nation’s future.” All essays and accompanying CD recordings must be submitted to a local VFW Post along with the completed V.O.D. entry form. Students must not identify themselves or their school in the essay or CD, and should do so only on their entry form. Submissions are due by Nov. 1.

VFW seeking nominees for Teacher of the Year

Atlantic-County-based Veterans of Foreign Wars District 16 is seeking nominees for its VFW and Ladies Auxiliary Smart/Maher VFW National Citizenship Education Teacher Award contest.

Each year, three exceptional teachers are recognized by the VFW for their outstanding commitment to teaching patriotism to their students. Post 16 will select one outstanding teacher from kindergarten-fifth grade, sixth-eighth grade and ninth-12th grade. These teachers move on to district level judging for the chance to compete at the state and national levels. National winners will receive a cash award for professional development expenses, a cash award for their school, plaques for themselves and their schools and an all-expenses-paid trip to attend a VFW conference and receive their award.

Small Sandy Survivors group set

New Jersey Hope and Healing presents Small Sandy Survivors, a creative, interactive workshop that offers support and education to children ages 5-10 who were affected by Hurricane Sandy.

VFW taking entries for essay competition

Atlantic County-based Veterans of Foreign Wars District 16 is taking entries for its VFW and Ladies Auxiliary Patriot’s Pen essay scholarship competition for students in sixth through eighth grades.

One first-place winner from each district will be sent to compete at the state level for a chance to compete nationally. The national winner earns a $5,000 scholarship and an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C. To enter, students must write an essay of between 300 and 400 words on the theme “What patriotism means to me.” Students must not identify themselves or their school in the essay, and should do so only on their entry form. Essays must be submitted to the local VFW post by Nov. 1.

ACPD offers medication drop

The Atlantic City Police Department is one of several in the state to participate in Project Medicine Drop, police said, and officials encourage Atlantic County residents to use the program to safely get rid of old medications.

The program lets people dispose anonymously of unused and expired medications, at any time, at drop boxes in the headquarters of participating police departments. The drop boxes accept solid pharmaceuticals including pills, capsules, patches, inhalers and pet medications. They cannot accept syringes or liquids. Police maintain custody of the deposited drugs, and dispose of them using normal procedures; they also make a quarterly report to the Division of Consumer Affairs about the quantity of drugs turned in.

State Attorney General Jeffrey S. Chiesa said he encourages all Atlantic County residents check their medicine cabinets for expired or unneeded drugs, and bring them to the ACPD drop box, which is available around the clock every day. Atlantic City Police Chief Ernest Jubilee said his agency was pleased to participate in the project.

DVDs needed for service members

AMVETS Post 911 in Somers Point is requesting new and used DVD movies to send to serving military personnel.

LGBTQ support group meets

Interweave of South Jersey offers a support group for members, family and friends of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning community on the third Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of the South Jersey Shore, 75 S. Program helps children in need find shoes

Youth Advocate Programs Inc. has announced its selection as an official partner of Payless Gives Shoes 4 Kids, an annual giving program from Payless ShoeSource.

YAP has programs in 18 states, and the Atlantic County office was awarded the grant. By helping families who struggle to provide their children with basic essentials, YAP hopes to relieve some of the stress parents feel during the holidays and bring joy to as many children as possible. The volunteers at CONTACT Cape-Atlantic offer free daily phone calls to say hello and check that all is well to help the disabled, elderly, and isolated citizens of Atlantic and Cape May counties who want to continue living independently. Group supports families of substance abusers

The Presbyterian Church at Hammonton has created a group to offer hope and support to those with a family member struggling with substance abuse. This group provides a safe, confidential gathering place where stories are heard without judgment. It is a place for those who have watched loved ones struggle with addiction.

The parents, guardians, spouses, children and others affected by family members who struggle with suspected or confirmed substance abuse can find and offer support and learn more about addiction. The group offers hope and the knowledge that we are not alone.

Health care courses offered

Emergency Medical Technician Certification will prepare students to perform basic life support.
