Music lectures set
Learn how composers work at the February series of free music lectures by Paul M. Somers, sponsored by the Bay-Atlantic Symphony. In a hands-on class, you will discovery how composers create and set their musical thoughts on paper. This class is designed for people who do not read music and will rely on the drawing of simple designs by all the participants.

Dance party benefit planned
The Alcove Center for Grieving Children and Families and KOOL 98.3 are teaming up to present The Alcove A Go Go, a retro dance party, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. March 1 at Boogie Nights at the Tropicana Casino and Resort, Atlantic City. The party will be broadcast live on KOOL 98.3.
In addition to the dancing and the live radio broadcast, guests will enjoy complimentary wine and an assortment of hors d’oeuvres and finger foods plus drink specials from a cash bar. The party will also feature live and silent auctions. Guests are encouraged to dress in their best disco outfits. Prizes will be awarded for the best and most authentic retro wardrobe.

Atlantic Cape Community College offers computer workshops
Learn about the world of computers with Atlantic Cape Community College’s computer technology workshops.
In Certified Ethical Hacker, participants will learn how to simulate an attack to evaluate and enhance network security and review the processes and tools hackers use to exploit systems. In addition, students will learn how to deploy effective countermeasures to prevent malicious attacks and deploy the necessary configuration and change management. The class will be held from 6 to 10 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, beginning Feb. 12.

A.C. library celebrates Black History Month
The Atlantic City Free Public Library will celebrate Black History Month by offering special programs for people of all ages in February. The library will present its photo exhibit “The Atlantic City Experience: Magic of Kentucky Avenue” at a grand opening 6:30 p.m. Feb. 6 in the Main Library meeting room. The exhibit will feature about 40 images from the library’s Atlantic City Heritage Collections.
African-American Heritage Museum of Southern New Jersey founder Ralph E. Hunter Sr. will discuss the library’s exhibit, which will highlight popular Kentucky Avenue venues, such as Club Harlem, the Paradise Club and Alan Theatre. Hunter will share his memories — and the public is invited to do the same — about the entertainment, people and places that made Kentucky Avenue such a hot spot.

A.C. library celebrates Chinese new year
The 2013 Chinese New Year — the Year of the Snake — begins Feb. 10, and the Atlantic City Free Public Library has scheduled an afternoon of programs that day in celebration. The Greater Philadelphia Asian Culture Center will join in the festivities, which will include traditional music and dance, calligraphy and paper cutting.
The music and dance performance, along with the calligraphy, are scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. No registration is required. As part of the library’s weekly Fun Day Sunday schedule, the paper-cutting program will be held 2 p.m. in the Main Library’s second-floor meeting room. Space is limited, and registration is required. Richard Stockton College will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the dedication and opening of the Kramer Hall facility in Hammonton at 11 a.m. Jan. 31 at Kramer Hall, 30 Front St.
Stockton President Herman J. Saatkamp will preside over the event. Charles and Lynn Kramer, for whom the building is being named, will attend. Anne Liberto, whose grandmother purchased the building and owned and operated the former garment factory, will speak at the event. This event is free and open to the public.

Wellness fair set
In honor of the American Heart Association’s National Heart Month, Shore Medical Center will put cardiovascular health front and center during its 17th annual Heart Day free community health and wellness fair from 9 a.m. to noon Feb. 1.
Medical center staff will provide educational opportunities and services. The free testing and educational information will include cholesterol screening, glucose screening, blood pressures, cardiac-risk assessments, stroke-risk assessments, body mass index, diabetes management, tobacco prevention and treatment, and more.
Feb. 1 is also the 10th annual National Wear Red Day — an American Heart Association initiative that encourages everyone to wear red to show support and build awareness of heart health.

Hospital receives grant
The TD Charitable Foundation, the charitable giving arm of TD Bank, continued its long-time support of Shore Medical Center by awarding a $20,000 grant toward the implementation of Shore’s eICU program.
Beginning Jan. 29, the medical center partnered with Advanced ICU Care — the nation’s largest provider of tele-ICU services — to deliver a program inclusive of 24/7/365 monitoring by highly trained intensivist physicians who are critical-care specialists, providing an extra layer of care that enables best practice and enhances patient safety.
Shore is the first medical center in New Jersey to implement this program, which is demonstrated to improve patient care and to meet the best practice standard of 24/7/365 intensivist oversight for all patients in an ICU.

The ACFSO is collecting donated new unopened packages of male and female undergarments from children sizes to young adult. The undergarments are to care for the needs of children during a crisis that ends up in an extended hospital stay.

Relay for Life set
The American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life will be held June 14 and 15 at Mainland Regional High School, 1301 Oak Ave., Linwood.
This overnight event is held to recognize that cancer doesn’t sleep and neither will we until we find the cure. Participants walk around the track to raise money for cancer.
Highlighting the event is the luminaria service, a candlelight vigil held at nightfall to honor survivors and to remember those lost to cancer. Luminaria candles line the track and are left burning throughout the night as a reminder to participants the importance of their involvement in the Relay for Life event.
Relay for Life is open to anyone. Cancer survivors can walk for free. Volunteers of all ages are needed. Sponsorships also are needed.

The National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa Inc., Iota Chapter will celebrate its 85th anniversary at a breakfast Feb. 2 at the Atlantic Club Hotel Casino, at which time it will honor historic African American churches in Atlantic City and environs for their many contributions to our community and their service to youth.
Iota will also recognize civic organizations and individuals who have rendered outstanding service to youth throughout the years as well as those members of Iota Chapter with 50 or more years of service. Cooking event scheduled
The Press of Atlantic City’s 12th annual South Jersey’s Men R Cookin’ event will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Feb. 28 at The Pool at Harrah’s, 777 Harrah’s Blvd., Atlantic City. The event is hosted by The Boys & Girls Club of Atlantic City and is their largest fundraiser of the year. The event benefits youth development programs for more than 1,400 school-age children at seven sites in Atlantic City and Pleasantville.
Featuring a host of South Jersey’s finest men preparing their favorite dishes, South Jersey Men R Cookin’ is a relaxed evening of great food and entertainment. There will be an array of appetizers, entrees, desserts, beverage of every kind, gourmet coffees, teas and other frothy confections.
Tickets for the event are $60 in advance or $70 after Feb. 21, and include admission to the event and a cookbook containing recipes for all of the evening’s entrees and desserts. Stranding Center to hold information session
The Marine Mammal Stranding Center will hold an informative presentation about how the center works at 10 a.m. Feb. 9 at the Brigantine VFW, 121 31st St. During the program, you will learn about the species of marine mammals and sea turtles that visit New Jersey every year, why they may become sick or injured, and how the MMSC helps in their rescue, rehabilitation, and release. Chili cooks wanted

Playwriting workshop scheduled
The Eagle Theatre will offer a multi-session workshop for those interested in learning about the craft of playwriting Feb. 2 to April 27 at the Theatre, 208 Vine St., Hammonton. It is open to anyone 16 and older.
The workshop is designed to familiarize participants with the major structural elements of dramatic form, and guide them toward writing their own one-act play. The workshop will be directed by John Perovich. Perovich is a theater artist from Mays Landing, an adjunct professor in the School of Arts and Humanities at Richard Stockton College, and has taught playwriting, acting, and dramatic literature courses.

Tickets on sale for food event
The organizers of the annual Chefs at the Shore event are making tickets available early specifically for holiday gifts. The 2013 Chefs at the Shore fundraiser is scheduled for 5:30 to 9 p.m. June 20 at Historic Gardner’s Basin, Atlantic City.
The event appeals to “foodies” and environmentalists alike, as it showcases some of the area’s finest food while it funds educational programming at the Atlantic City Aquarium. Proceeds from the event also are used to fund chef educational programs and scholarships for culinary students for the Professional Chefs Association.
Chefs at the Shore tickets are $50 before June 1 and $60 after that date. Guests may purchase a block of ten for $450. The annual CONTACT Cape-Atlantic Triathlon/Duathlon will take place through Feb. 18.
Participants have a month to complete the event: a 2.4-mile swim in a pool, a 112-mile bike ride and a 26-mile run. Triathletes do all three events. Duathletes do two events.
The registration donation is $30 and is co-sponsored by the Ocean City Aquatic and Fitness Center. Competitors can substitute gym events for the swimming, biking and running events by documenting how many laps they swim or aquasize classes they take for the swim leg of the triathlon; how many miles they bike, step or row for the bicycling portion; and how many miles they walk/run, use the elliptical or take aerobics classes for the marathon section. Everyone who enters receives a T-shirt, and everyone who finishes will receive an award. A list of triathlon finishers will be posted and an awards ceremony will take place Feb. 23 at the Ocean City Aquatic and Fitness Center, 18th Street and Simpson Avenue, Ocean City.
The triathlon is a fundraiser for CONTACT Cape-Atlantic, a nonprofit volunteer group that makes daily telephone reassurance calls to the elderly and disabled in Atlantic and Cape May counties. Teen writing contest set
Gilda’s Club South Jersey is sponsoring its annual teen writing contest, “It’s Always Something,” for students in the ninth to 12th grades. They are looking for personal essays and poetry. Each writing must be honest and speak to how cancer has affected that teen writer’s life.
All writings must be 500 to 1,000 words, double-spaced. One entry per student. The contest deadline is March 15. Winners will be selected by May 10. Both First Place Essay and Poetry winners will receive an Apple iPad. Prizes also will be awarded to second and third place winners in each category
Volunteers needed for senior shuttle
Volunteers are needed for the Ventnor Senior Citizen Transportation Service.
This free shuttle service is available to all senior citizens residing in Ventnor and offers rides to anywhere in the Downbeach area of Ventnor, Margate and Longport. This service is performed by volunteer dispatchers and drivers, who are always needed to support this program.

Restaurant gala set for March
The 30th anniversary Atlantic Cape Community College Restaurant Gala will take place March 14 at Bally’s Atlantic City Hotel and Casino. With the theme “Celebrate the 30 kNights,” the gala will feature Camelot-inspired decor and a feast.
Gala honorees include the Donio and Crescenzo families of Hammonton and Chef Kevin Scull of Egg Harbor Township. The annual fundraiser has raised nearly $3 million for scholarships since 1984. All gala proceeds benefit student scholarships at the Academy of Culinary Arts at Atlantic Cape Community College and Atlantic Cape Foundation operations.

The Casino Career Institute at Atlantic Cape Community College has prepared more than 50,000 people for careers in casino games and continues to offer training for those who wish to enter the profession.
The Half the Time at Half the Price Program offers table games professionals an opportunity to increase their value and marketability to employers by learning a new game in a short-term, low-cost program. CCI table games alumni who have graduated more than three years ago can refresh their skills as they return to the gaming workforce with an Alumni Refresher Program. Graduates may take the refresher program course only for the games they previously have taken with CCI. Alumni who have graduated from CCI within the past three years can revive their skills with the Alumni Practice Program.
Classes include: introduction to casino games-blackjack, craps, baccarat, poker, pai gow tiles, roulette and pai gow poker.

Scholarship applications accepted
Atlantic Cape Community College is accepting scholarship applications for the 2013-14 academic year. Atlantic Cape offers merit- and need-based scholarships for students who are continuing their studies at Atlantic Cape or transferring to another college in the fall 2013 semester.
The 2013 Student Scholarship Application Packet is available for pickup at all three Atlantic Cape campuses, 5100 Black Horse Pike, Mays Landing; 341 Court House-South Dennis Road, Cape May Court House; 1535 Bacharach Blvd., Atlantic City; and at atlantic.edu/finaid/scholarships.htm.
The deadline to file a scholarship application is Feb. 8. Eligible students must submit an application, two letters of recommendation from faculty members and an essay that describes one’s personal and professional goals.
Scholarship recipients will be notified in April, and are invited to attend Atlantic Cape’s Scholarship Awards Ceremony on May 20. Jazz Society seeks sponsors

Sandy Relief Fund established for students
The Atlantic Cape Community College Foundation has established the Sandy Relief Fund for Atlantic Cape Students to collect emergency funds for Atlantic Cape Community College students affected by Hurricane Sandy.
More than 1,900 Atlantic Cape students live on the barrier island communities assaulted by the storm on Oct. 29. Student evacuees are now returning to devastating conditions-wrecked homes and vehicles, and destroyed computer equipment, school supplies and textbooks.
The Sandy Relief Fund for Atlantic Cape Students will provide assistance for students who need to replace books, computer equipment, clothing and food, and to cover commuting costs and other necessities. Senior Center open
The Hammonton Community Senior Citizen Center is open for seniors, age 50 and older, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday-Friday and is located in the Canoe Club building off Egg Harbor Road at Park Avenue in Hammonton Lake Park. Recreational activities include card games, a walking group and book club. There are no membership fees or dues. On the third Friday of each month, Atlanticare Regional Medical Center sponsors a free lecture by a health care professional on a subject related directly to senior issues. The talk is followed by a luncheon provided by the Canoe Club Kitchen crew for $3. Bingo is held the fourth Tuesday of each month, followed by a free luncheon.

Health courses offered
The Health Professions Institute at Atlantic Cape Community College offers programs for health care professionals interested in advancing their skills.
Emergency Medical Technician Certification will prepare students to perform basic life support. Participants will learn adult and pediatric medical and trauma assessment, basic airway support, use of AED, assisting patients with medication administration, splinting, bleeding control, lifting, transferring and transporting stretchers and patients. It will take place from 7 to 10:30 p.m. Tuesday and Friday, and 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Saturday.
Multi-Skill Technician will prepare students to function as EKG and Phlebotomy Technicians. Curriculum includes: anatomy and physiology of the heart, medical terminology, medical disease processes and appropriate treatments, medical ethics. The class will meet from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday, and 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday and Friday, beginning March 4.
In Administrative Health-Care Specialist, participants will learn a variety of administrative duties in the offices of physicians, podiatrists, chiropractors, dentists and other health care facilities. The class will meet from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday to Thursday, and 8 a.m.to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday, beginning March 11.
Lecture and lab modules will take place at the Health Professions Institute at Atlantic Cape’s Worthington Atlantic City Campus, 1535 Bacharach Blvd. Clinical expertise will come from various hospital settings and students will also gain field experience on paramedic units.

Golden Cotillion planned
The National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, Inc. Iota Chapter will introduce a Golden Cotillion in spring 2013.
The Golden Cotillion, “Lovelier the Second Time Around,” will feature women 60 and older. It will provide an opportunity for mature ladies to experience relevant workshops and an evening of dining, dancing and fun. Ladies are sought to participate. A sponsorship fee will be required. Sponsors may be individuals, civic organizations, social clubs, or churches. The National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, Inc. Iota Chapter has been the sponsor of the Debutante Cotillion for high school seniors for more than 50 years. The benefits of this cotillion have enabled the chapter presenting scholarships each of these years. The two cotillions will continue to benefit Iota’s Scholarship Fund and the sorority’s Youth Programs.

Family readiness group formed
The 150th/160th Engineer Company, New Jersey Army National Guard unit out of Hammonton has officially formed a Family Readiness Group to support the soldiers and families within the unit. Head Start enrolling preschoolers
The Atlantic Human Resources, Inc. Head Start and Early Head Start program is recruiting preschool children for the 2012-13 program. There is no cost to families who qualify.

Pulmonary support group formed
An evening support group is being formed in the Atlantic County area for residents with lung and related pulmonary disease in need of camaraderie and friendship.

Therapeutic riding program accepting riders
A therapeutic horseback riding program in Egg Harbor Township is accepting riders.
HEARTS TRC, LLC, is a NARHA/PATH member center providing therapeutic assisted equine activities. Sue Adams has created a new curriculum, “From the Ground Up,” exclusive to HEARTS TRC, which brings new and skills to all of its riders. Adams and the HEARTS TRC partners have more than 50 years of combined experience working with children and adults who are challenged physically, mentally, psychologically and socially. They also are experienced teaching riders without disabilities. Sessions cover care of the horse, equine anatomy, psychology of the horse, and training techniques. Techniques to be introduced also include equine massage and healing through touch, to relieve stress, pain, and create relaxation within the horse.

Food bank also needs baby items
The Emergency Assistance Pantry at the Community FoodBank of New Jersey, Southern Branch, is in need of baby formula and disposable diapers for its clients. The Community FoodBank of New Jersey-Southern Branch, serves Atlantic, Cape May, Cumberland and southern Burlington counties. The FoodBank has seen a 60 percent increase in need since 2008.
Mental Health Association reaching out to veterans
The Mental Health Association in Atlantic County, or MHAAC, is reaching out to OIF/OEF military veterans through a self-help group called MHAAC Veterans Network. It’s all about veterans helping other veterans through a member-run group process. In addition to MHAAC traditional services, this veterans group will offer education, advocacy and support.
While this group was formed to exclusively address the special needs of Atlantic County’s Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom veterans and their families, other veterans groups also are planned. MHAAC, in conjunction with Richard Stockton College undergraduate and graduate social work programs are planning to hold meetings for Vietnam era, post 9-11, and Korean War veterans as well as topics addressing issues such as HIV and hepatitis C among veterans.
