Congressional Art Competition winners recognized
Buena Regional High School student Danielle Banas recently was recognized by U.S. Rep. Frank LoBiondo, R-2nd, as the winner of the 2013 Congressional Art Competition. Her piece, “Contemplative Blue,” will be displayed in Washington, D.C., in the tunnel connecting the Cannon House Office Building and the U.S. Capitol for one year.

Arc to honor FACES 4 Autism and 21 Down
The Arc of Atlantic County will honor two community partners, FACES 4 Autism and 21 Down, at its annual Tribute Fundraiser on May 22 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the Renault Winery in Egg Harbor City.
Wine in the Woods will feature a complimentary cocktail reception, hors d’oeuvres and pasta station, silent and chance auction, a music duo by Kenny I, photo booth and a presentation to the honorees. Medical society offers scholarships
The Atlantic County Medical Society will offer scholarship money to medical students who are accepted to or are attending an accredited medical school. Applicants must be residents of Atlantic County.

Luncheon to honor military personnel

LoBiondo encourages police departments to apply for grants
U.S. Rep. Frank A. LoBiondo, R-2nd, is encouraging law enforcement departments in South Jersey to apply for federal funding available under the Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) Hiring Program.
The program will award $165 million in federal funding for fiscal year 2013 for the hiring and rehiring of additional career law enforcement officers in an effort to create and preserve jobs and increase their community policing capacity and crime prevention efforts.
Under the 2013 program, awardees may receive as much as 75 percent of the approved entry-level officer salary and fringe benefit costs, with a minimum 25 percent local cash match requirement. Grant funds may be used to hire new, full-time sworn officer positions, to rehire officers who have been laid off, or to rehire officers who are scheduled to be laid off on a specific future date as a result of local budget cuts. The program requires each position awarded to be retained with local funds for at least 12 months at the conclusion of 36 months of federal funding for each position. Priority consideration will be given to agencies that use their COPS Hiring Program funding to hire either school resource officers or military veterans and those targeting to reduce homicide.
The COPS program is managed by the U.S. Department of Justice; see cops.usdoj.gov. The deadline to apply is May 22.
Levinson honored as County Executive of Year
Atlantic County Executive Dennis Levinson has been selected as the County Executive of the Year by the executive board of the New Jersey Conference of Mayors, the oldest and largest statewide mayors organization in the country.
Levinson was to be honored at the organization’s 50th annual conference on April 25 at the Borgata Hotel, Casino and Spa in Atlantic City.
Food Bank Beach Ball set
The Community Food Bank of New Jersey will hold its Beach Ball on May 21 at the Atlantic City Country Club in Northfield.

KoC golf tourney planned for May 13
The Knights of Columbus Villa Marie Council is holding its 10th annual 2013 Golf Classic on May 13 at the Mays Landing Country Club in Mays Landing. The tournament is in a four-players scramble format. Registration is at noon, with a shotgun start at 1 p.m., followed by an awards dinner. This year’s tournament is restricted to about 100 golfers. The fee is $100 per golfer and the proceeds will be used to support the council’s community programs.
Mrs. New Jersey America seeks entrants
The Mrs. New Jersey America Organization is accepting applications for the 2013 Mrs. New Jersey competition June 22-23 at Resorts Casino Hotel in Atlantic City.
Competition includes interview, evening gown and swimsuit. There is no talent category. Entrants must be at least 18, married, a U.S. citizen and a resident of New Jersey for at least three months (exceptions for military). No pageant experience is necessary. The state winner receives an all-expense-paid trip to participate in the national 2013 Mrs. America Pageant hosted by Florence Henderson.
Student music competition on Music Pier
The public is invited to attend the second annual Esther C. Weil Student Music Competition at 4:30 p.m. May 14 on the Ocean City Music Pier at Moorlyn Terrace and the Boardwalk. The program, sponsored by the Friends of the Ocean City Pops, features 10 vocalists and six instrumentalists. Admission is free. Parking lots on Eighth and Ninth streets and Moorlyn Terrace will be open with no charge.
Students in grades 9-12 and enrolled in eight high schools in Atlantic and Cape May counties have submitted credentials and recommendations from their schools and private music teachers to qualify for the competition. Three professional musicians will judge and award cash prizes in a competition named for Mrs. Weil, an avid patron of the performing arts in Ocean City and Philadelphia. The first-place instrumentalist and vocalist will each receive $1,000 and make a guest appearance with the Ocean City Pops this summer season. The second- and third-place winners in each category will receive $500 and $250, respectively. William Scheible, artistic director and pops conductor, expects to announce the winners by 7 p.m.
High schools represented in the competition include Absegami, Cape May County Technical, Egg Harbor Township, Mainland Regional, Middle Township, Oakcrest and Ocean City.
Open call for short films
The Noyes Museum of Art of the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey is holding an open call for film shorts for the Noyes Independent Film Series, which consists of three festivals: the Hammonton Outdoor Film Fest on July 18, the Noyes Independent Film Festival on Nov. 16 and the Noyes Atlantic City Film Festival in spring 2014.
Films will be chosen from original works that have never been shown, works by young independent filmmakers ages 18-20, and films that have been previously screened. Submissions should be between 2 and 60 minutes long. The deadline for submissions is July 1.

Lee to speak at Atlantic Cape
Bakari Lee, Esq., a member of the McManimon, Scotland and Baumann law firm in Roseland, will deliver the keynote address to Atlantic Cape Community College’s class of 2013 at the school’s commencement at 11 a.m May 23.

Jersey Genesis Triathlon set

Virtual Israel at Congregation Beth Judah
The sights and sounds of Israel will come alive at 9 a.m. May 19 at Congregation Beth Judah of Ventnor.
Participants on the virtual tour will fill out their own passports and board an El Al jet for the flight to Israel. Each group will meet up with their tour guide, who will direct them along the way. At Masada, there will be an archaeological dig and exploration of a recently discovered cave. In Jerusalem, guests will visit the Kotel (Western Wall), learn about the tradition of placing a note in a crevice, and have the opportunity to compose a prayer. Participants will visit the Dead Sea. At Safed, everyone will visit an ancient artists’ colony and create their own Safed-style works of art.

ShopRite donates to Relay for Life
Dave Hahn and Helen Whoy, co-captains of ShopRite’s Scrunchy Bunch team for Relay for Life, recently presented a check for more than $17,000 to Christine Sands-Bennett, chair of Relay for Life of Linwood. The money was raised by ShopRite employees and customers who donated during February at area ShopRite stores. The ShopRite Scrunchy Bunch team will participate in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life at Mainland Regional High School, 1301 Oak Ave., Linwood, on June 14-15.
Relay for Life is open to anyone who wants to participate. Cancer survivors may walk for free. Volunteers of all ages are needed. This overnight event is held to recognize that cancer doesn’t sleep and neither will we until we find the cure. Participants walk around the track to raise money for cancer. Highlighting the event is the luminaria service, a candlelight vigil at nightfall to honor survivors and to remember those lost to cancer. Luminaria candles line the track and are left burning throughout the night as a reminder to participants of the importance of their involvement.

Master Gardeners plant sale planned
The Master Gardeners Association of Atlantic County will sell wildlife-friendly and native perennials, herbs, annuals, vegetables, succulents, trees and shrubs at the annual plant sale from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 18 at the Galloway Township branch of the Atlantic County Library, on Jimmie Leeds Road.

Bay-Atlantic Symphony plans concerts

Native plant swap sale for backyard habitats
Gardeners can pot up their extra native plants for the Unitarian Universalist Congregation’s annual Native Plant Swap and Sale on May 4 at 75 S. Pomona Road at the corner of Liebig Street, Galloway Township.
Participants who bring two native plants to cover the price of admission can swap as many as 10 additional plants. Participants without plants to swap may purchase as many as three plants for $2 each. The event focuses on native, non-invasive perennials, shrub and tree seedlings, as well as non-invasive species beneficial to butterflies, hummingbirds and other wildlife. The goal is to promote more backyard habitat in southern New Jersey by providing local gardeners who bring plants to swap with a source of inexpensive or free native plants, said Jesse Connor, of Port Republic.

After cash prizes totaling $1,000 are awarded and minimal expenses are paid, the additional money raised is split between the Elks and VFW for their support of charities that benefit veterans and handicapped children.

Microsoft Certified IT Professional (MCITP) participants will learn the information and hands-on skills necessary to configure and troubleshoot a Windows 7 deployment, a Windows Server 2008 network infrastructure and an Active Directory deployment. Registration open for theater summer camp
The Eagle Theatre, 208 Vine Street, Hammonton, has opened registration for its 2013 Summer Camp for Young Performers.
The camp will run 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday to Friday, June 24-July 17. It is open to youth ages 8-15. At the camp’s conclusion, students will put on a production of Disney’s “Aladdin,” with four performance dates July 18-21. The camp will be directed by Eagle Theatre co-artistic director Ed Corsi, and the culminating production will be directed by Rich Curcio.

Rotary Club seeks host families in Oakcrest area
The Mays Landing Rotary Club is sponsoring a Rotary Youth Exchange student during the 2013-14 school year. This student will attend Oakcrest High School.
This year, the student is expected to be a boy from Germany. He will be between 15½ and 18 years old when he arrives at the end of August. He will spend his junior or senior year of high school learning a new language in a new country.
The Rotary program is to have a family host a student for about 3½ months, so three families will host the student during his exchange school year. Students must follow a defined set of rules, which they acknowledge before departing their home country. They have an allowance of $90 per month supplied by the Rotary Club and have expectations of family financial support from home for things such as clothing.
The host family must live in an area that attends Oakcrest High School. The family is expected to provide a place to sleep and meals including lunch for the student. A shared room is fine; students do not have to have a bedroom of their own. There also should be a place to study. They should be treated the same as any other family member with respect to chores. They agree in advance that it is their responsibility to adjust to the host family and they do not expect to be treated as a guest. They are expected to successfully pass their courses in high school.
Families with children, families without children, dual parent families and single parent families are all acceptable. All applicants for hosting will have an application taken that includes an in-home interview and a background check will be run.

Artists wanted for Boardwalk show
The Atlantic City Arts Commission and Noyes Museum of Art of Richard Stockton College invite all artists to the DoArtAC.com Boardwalk Art Show, a revival of the tradition of Boardwalk art shows, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 7 on the Atlantic City Boardwalk.
The event is free and all proceeds from the event will be used for future art events in Atlantic City. All artwork must be original and created by the artist registering for the show. Entry fee is $75 for a 12-by-12-foot space. Applications can be downloaded at noyesmuseum.org, atlanticcityart.org or doartac.com. Artists must submit five images of their work, an image of their display and a short bio, along with the application and entry fee.

College offers summer discount
Richard Stockton College is offering a summer tuition discount for undergraduate courses as well as a summer housing discount on its Galloway Township campus.
The discounted course rates also are offered at the Carnegie Center and at three new Stockton instructional sites in Manahawkin, Hammonton and Woodbine. Stockton’s eight summer sessions, which have start dates in May, June and July, are open to students enrolled in degree programs, non-matriculated students and students currently enrolled at other institutions. Students can save more than $300 for each four-credit undergraduate course. A 20 percent housing discount is also offered to those wishing to reside on the main Galloway campus during the summer. Summer sessions enable students to graduate sooner or lighten their course loads during the fall or spring semesters. With courses available at the main campus and at four different instructional sites, students can choose a convenient location.

Group offered for substance abusers
The Presbyterian Church at Hammonton has created a group to offer hope and support to those with a family member struggling with substance abuse. This group provides a safe, confidential gathering place where stories are heard without judgment. It is a place for those who have watched loved ones struggle with addiction.
The parents, guardians, spouses, children and others affected by family members who struggle with suspected or confirmed substance abuse can find and offer support and learn more about addiction. The group offers hope and the knowledge that we are not alone.

Free vacations offered
The Ocean City Tourism Commission, Ocean City Regional Chamber of Commerce and Ocean City Board of Realtors have once again joined forces to promote “America’s Greatest Family Resort” by awarding 11 families a fun-filled, week-long family vacation in Ocean City.
Each of the 11 winners will receive a seven-night stay in a three or four bedroom condo that sleeps as many as eight people. Pictures, addresses and descriptions of each unit are available on the contest entry page.
Contest entry is through the Chamber’s website at OceanCityVacation.com. Entrants may enter one time for each of the 11 weeks per email address. Winners will be randomly selected and notified about three weeks before their vacation. Winners will be selected beginning June 3 and each week following until Aug.12.
5K run scheduled May 4
The Hammonton Mothers’ Club will sponsor the Hammonton 5K Run For Fun at 9 a.m. May 4 at the Hammonton Lake Park, 100 Sports Drive, Hammonton. Proceeds of the event will benefit Hammonton Youth Recreation and the Hammonton Parks and Recreation Department, which provides recreational programs and playground facilities in the greater Hammonton area.
The course will be a police-assisted run through the streets of Hammonton, starting and ending at Hammonton Lake Park. A one-mile family walk will take place on a traffic-free track. Prizes and medals will be awarded to the top male and female runners. Other awards will be given to the top male and female in many age categories.

Foodie Tuesdays scheduled
Foodie Tuesdays at Richard Stockton College in Hammonton are a series of continuing education courses focusing on culinary education. The classes are designed so that participants can sign up for one, all or any number of the courses. Each seminar begins at Kramer Hall, 30 Front St. in Hammonton, for a discussion and instruction from a culinary expert. Afterwards, the seminar will move a few blocks away to Rocco’s Town House, 21 N. Third St., for light dining in the heart of Hammonton’s arts district.

Health care courses offered
The Health Professions Institute at Atlantic Cape Community College will offer programs to help health-care professionals advance their skills.
Certified Home Health Aide for CNAs is designed for the CNA who wants to become a certified home health aide, two Saturdays, May 11 and 18.
Emergency Medical Technician Certification will prepare students to perform basic life support. Participants will learn adult and pediatric medical and trauma assessment, basic airway support, use of AED, assisting patients with medication administration, splinting, bleeding control, lifting, transferring and transporting stretchers and patients, beginning Sept. 6.
Lecture and lab modules will take place at the Health Professions Institute at Atlantic Cape’s Worthington Atlantic City Campus, 1535 Bacharach Blvd. Clinical expertise will come from various hospital settings.

Meerwald in A.C. this summer
The A.J. Meerwald, New Jersey’s official tall ship, is scheduled to dock at Historic Gardner’s Basin, Atlantic City, from Aug. 1 to 11. Public tours and sails are scheduled, including themed sails with pirates, trawling for marine critters, romantic evening sails and a full-day Sailor Camp for children age 10 to 16 years.

Library offers language learning
The Atlantic County Library System now offers more language learning opportunities through the Mango Languages online resource. The most recently added languages are Egyptian, modern standard Arabic, Romanian and Swahili. Mango Languages offers nearly 50 world language courses and15 English as a Second Language courses.
Mango users may choose to learn simple, practical skills for common polite, conversational situations or to learn in-depth and comprehensive language and grammar skills. Each language is presented with an appreciation for cultural nuance and real-world application that goes beyond teaching vocabulary to integrate components of grammar and culture. Mango teaches actual conversation, breaking down complex linguistic elements within an audio-visual framework that draws important connections and builds on information the user already has learned.
No special training, downloads or installation are required to use Mango Languages on a home computer. Free iPhone and Android apps are available through the library system.

Center offers development courses
The Stockton College Education Center will offer a series of one-day professional development courses for K-12 educators through May. The Stockton College Education Center is in the new addition to the Sam Azeez Museum of Woodbine Heritage of Stockton College, located at 610 Washington Ave. in Woodbine.
The courses are convenient for teachers in Cape May, Cumberland and Atlantic County school districts. Participants are asked to bring their own device (BYOD) for certain courses. The Atlantic Cape Family Support Organization is collecting donated new unopened packages of male and female undergarments from children sizes to young adult. The undergarments are to care for the needs of children during a crisis that ends up in an extended hospital stay.

Tickets on sale for food event
The organizers of the annual Chefs at the Shore event are making tickets available early specifically for holiday gifts. The 2013 Chefs at the Shore fundraiser is scheduled for 5:30 to 9 p.m. June 20 at Historic Gardner’s Basin, Atlantic City.
The event appeals to “foodies” and environmentalists alike, as it showcases some of the area’s finest food while it funds educational programming at the Atlantic City Aquarium. Proceeds from the event also are used to fund chef educational programs and scholarships for culinary students for the Professional Chefs Association.

The National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, Inc. Iota Chapter will introduce a Golden Cotillion in spring 2013.
The Golden Cotillion, “Lovelier the Second Time Around,” will feature women 60 and older. It will provide an opportunity for mature ladies to experience relevant workshops and an evening of dining, dancing and fun. Ladies are sought to participate. A sponsorship fee will be required. Iota Chapter has been the sponsor of the Debutante Cotillion for high school seniors for more than 50 years.
