School supplies collection under way
The AMI Foundation is conducting its fifth annual “Tools for Schools” supply drive through Aug. 16.
The foundation has placed blue collection baskets in the reception areas of Atlantic Medical Imaging office locations in Atlantic, Cape May, Monmouth and Ocean counties. The list of requested school supplies includes pencils, erasers, spiral notebooks, pocket folders, crayons, colored markers, colored pencils, glue sticks, highlighters and soft pencil cases.
The foundation has purchased bookbags to accompany the school supply donations. Once the drive is complete, the collected supplies and bookbags will be delivered to elementary schools in late August. To date, the AMI Foundation has donated nearly 1,000 bookbags to schoolchildren in need.

CASA information session set
CASA for Children of Atlantic and Cape May Counties will hold an information session at 6 p.m. Aug. 20 at the Mays Landing Branch of the Atlantic County Library System.
The 60-minute program gives an overview of the organization and shows how CASA volunteers advocate in court on behalf of abused and neglected children. Bookbag drive under way
The Family Service Association, Spencer’s Gifts, Fulton Bank and Asbury United Methodist Church are packing new bookbags with the necessities for a successful school year.

Brittany Run for Your Health set
The Brittany Rodio Foundation recently announced its intention to bring back the Brittany Run for Your Health 5K and 1-Mile Fun Run. The event will take place Aug. 24 at Hammonton Lake Park.
This year’s Brittany Run is organized by a group of St. Augustine Preparatory School seniors as part of their Caritas Project, a senior year community service project. The group consists of Collin Wetherington, Paul Bergamo, Patrick Irelan and Joe Rodio III, Brittany’s brother. Net proceeds from this year’s event will be provided to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Grant applications for fiscal year 2014 arts and history projects are now available online through the Atlantic County Office of Cultural and Heritage Affairs.

Eye health discussion set at Beth El
From 1 to 3 p.m. Aug. 14, at Beth El Synagogue of Margate, the state Commission for the Blind and Visually Impaired will discuss eye health care as well as an overview of its services.
Covered in the presentation will be common eye conditions, low vision and low vision devices, diabetes and its effect on your vision, plus information about nutrition to maintain good eye health. There will be opportunities for questions and answers as well as the ability to apply for services. This program is open to the public free of charge.
Ninth annual Jewish Summer Fest set
On Aug. 11, experience a taste of Jewish culture through food, music and art at the ninth annual Jewish Summer Fest. Rain date is Aug. 25.
Participants can enjoy Jewish music, featuring DJ Justin Horn of “2Life Talent,” hands-on crafts, children’s rides, games and face painting as well as a kosher barbecue with hot dogs, burgers, falafel and more. Free concert in Brigantine
The South Jersey Area Wind Ensemble, under the baton of music director Keith Hodgson and associate director Ron Poorman, will present a free concert in Brigantine on Aug. 12. The event begins at 7 p.m in the North School Auditorium, 301 E. Evans Blvd.
The concert, “Broadway Favorites,” sinclude music from “West Side Story,” “The Sound of Music,” “Phantom of the Opera,” “Wicked,” and others in a program designed to appeal to all ages. Rabbi to give lecture
Temple Beth Shalom welcomes Rabbi Daniel Brenner at 8 p.m. Aug. 9 for the seventh annual Rabbi Sanford H. Hahn Memorial Lecture.
An extended Oneg to follow. Brenner is a rabbi, educator and author. He was named by Newsweek Magazine in 2009 as one of the 50 most influential rabbis in America. He will speak on the topic of the future of the Jewish People at a special Shabbat service.

Call for photos for Noyes’ Raw exhibit
The Noyes Museum of Art of Stockton College has announced an open call for photographs for Raw, its second annual Juried Photography Competition and Exhibition. The top 40 images will be selected by a juror for a group exhibition running from Nov. 7 to Jan. 31, 2014, at the Noyes Gallery at Kramer Hall, in Hammonton.
In keeping with the history of The Noyes Museum of Art of Stockton College’s love for New Jersey’s natural features, images pertaining to New Jersey’s raw splendor and spirit that capture the beauty and diversity of New Jersey’s landscape, people, animals, water and nature are desired. Images in any photographic process are eligible for submission. Any image submitted must have been taken within the past three years. This year’s juror is Markam Keith Adams, Assistant Professor of Photography at Rowan University.
There is a $25 submission fee for as many as five images; $6 for each additional image. Valid entries must include a completed application form, submission fee, and be submitted as digital files on a CD; no email submissions accepted. Author to discuss book on Pine Barrens
The Noyes Museum of Art of Stockton College presents an artist talk and book signing by local author Paul Evans Pedersen, Jr., for his new book, “The Legendary Pine Barrens: New Tales from Old Haunts” at 5 p.m. Aug. 15.
Pedersen will discuss the book and will read excerpts from his stories. Arc holding Parents Night panel
The Arc of Atlantic County and representatives from other local special needs agencies will hold a Parents Night panel discussion and idea exchange from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Aug. 13 at the Arc of Atlantic County, 6550 Delilah Road, Suite 101 in Egg Harbor Township. NAMI offers classes
The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) of Atlantic and Cape May counties will again offer its Family-to-Family Education Program specifically for people who have a loved one with a serious mental illness.
The 12-week series of classes will begin Sept. 10 and will be held at the Jordan Road Elementary School in Somers Point from 7 to 9:30 p.m. The course will cover information about schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depression, panic disorder, and obsessive compulsive disorder.

Stockton offers seminar on aging

Free training for school bus personnel
The South Jersey Traffic Safety Alliance has scheduled one-day classes for school bus transportation departments on child passenger safety seats, also known as safety restraints.
The six-hour training is a national curriculum, developed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and supports the guidelines for Safe Transportation of Pre-School Age Children on School Buses. The training includes skills on the school bus, as well as a review of seat belts on school buses, New Jersey law, the different types of child restraints, how to select and install seats, safety vests, add-on specific seats and integrated seats.
The class runs 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Alliance will provide lunch through a grant from the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety.

Jaffe exhibit under way

Medicare workshops offered
Atlantic County residents who are interested in learning how to navigate through the Medicare system and make informed decisions about their Medicare coverage are invited to attend a free workshop in August at your choice of three locations.
The New to Medicare workshops are sponsored by the Atlantic County Division of Intergenerational Services in an effort to help newly enrolled Medicare participants or those who are soon to be eligible obtain a better understanding of the choices available to them. The workshops will address enrollment, Medicare Parts A and B, Part D prescription drug coverage, supplemental coverage and Medicare Advantage Plans. Information about programs that help low-income beneficiaries offset the cost of Medicare premiums and co-pays will also be provided.

Homemade wine competition planned
The public is welcomed to participate in an amateur homemade wine competition during the third annual Waterfront Wine and Food Festival, which will take place noon to 5 p.m. Oct. 19 and 20 at Lake Lenape Park.
Red wines will be judged Oct. 19 and white wines on Oct. 20 based on a variety of characteristics. Wine bottles may be delivered by 11:30 a.m. on the day of the event. Entries should be in a 750ml bottle labeled with winemaker’s name and wine class. Participants must be at least 21 years of age and not be employed or a family member of any operating winery.
Entries will be judged by the South Jersey Wineries at the event. There is a $15 entry fee and applications are due by Oct. 12. Gold, silver and bronze medals will be awarded, along with bragging rights. There will be a best-in-show medal for the overall competition. Devotion by the Ocean set
The Congregation Beth Judah family will meet for worship on the beach at Newport Avenue in Ventnor on Friday evening, Aug. 30, at 6 p.m.
This musical service on the sand with the background sound of the ocean gives a new perspective to sharing Shabbat with family and friends. Rabbi Aaron Gaber and Hazzan Jeffrey Myers lead a participatory service open to all, no matter what background. Prayer books, Kiddush and snack are provided, participants come and bring a beach chair.
Medical reserve corps calls for volunteers
The Atlantic County Medical Reserve Corps consists of volunteers who may be called upon during an emergency to assist the Atlantic County Division of Public Health and its emergency partners. The MRC invites any licensed or certified health care professional, practicing or retired, living or working in Atlantic County, and other community volunteers to apply for membership. Applicants must be at least 18 years old and a U.S. citizen.
During a public health emergency, MRC volunteers are called on to help protect the safety and well-being of their fellow citizens. It may be necessary to open large scale clinics or Points of Distribution sites to distribute antibiotics or provide vaccinations to prevent people from becoming ill. These sites require greeters, translators, child-care workers, clergy and religious leaders, customer service attendants, information technology assistance, food support/canteen service and general helpers, as well as licensed medical personnel.
The Atlantic County MRC meets quarterly. New members attend a three-session orientation that includes training on personal preparedness, pandemic influenza, personal protective equipment, POD operations, and the role of the MRC. Members can receive additional training in the Incident Command System, CPR, psychological first aid, and call center operations. MRC volunteers are encouraged to participate in readiness exercises and may have opportunities to interact with volunteers serving on the Atlantic County Community Emergency Response Team.

Grants cover arthritis pool classes at Bacharach
Seniors 60 and older who live in Atlantic County, have a doctor’s diagnosis of arthritis, and are eligible for Medicaid, the PAAD program or Senior Gold, may apply for an Arthritis Foundation Aquatic Program grant offered by the County Division of Intergenerational Services.
The Arthritis Foundation Aquatic Program is a gentle exercise program for seniors. Classes encourage flexibility, increase range of motion and promote circulation. The class meets Tuesdays or Thursdays from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. in the heated therapy pool at Bacharach in Pomona. The grant covers the cost of 10 classes (10 weeks) for eligible participants. After completing the grant, participants are welcome to self-pay for the program at $100 for 10 classes. Participants must provide their own transportation.

Stockton PRSSA open for business
The National Public Relation Student Society of America organization in May accepted the request of Richard Stockton College of New Jersey students for national acceptance into the organization. The students have decided to name their chapter after their founding adviser, Dr. Ai Zhang.
The PRSSA is a national organization that gives public relations students networking opportunities and professional experience as they work with local businesses. The local chapter’s students are reaching out to local businesses to do public relations work for them. This would include events, fundraisers, writing press releases and using contacts to help improve the overall image of that business. This work will also help students of the organization gain hands-on experience in the public relations field.

Great Bay Gallery is presenting its 2013 Summer Project Celebrating Exit 30: Here and Now. The group exhibit includes the work of 17 artists and five poets at the Great Bay Gallery, 829 Bay Ave., Somers Point.
The exhibit and sale, featuring current scenes of Somers Point and Ocean City, will present works in media including oil, watercolor, pastels, three-dimensional constructions and displays of poetry. Wedding of the Sea set in A.C.
The Wedding of the Sea celebration will take place Aug. 15 at Historic Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.

School supply drive under way
A national school supply drive will benefit the Boys and Girls Clubs of Atlantic City and Vineland and the Lakehurst Navy Youth Center.
The Boys and Girls Clubs of America and Staples are teaming up with teen actor Jake T. Austin for the Staples for Students National School Supply Drive for kids in need. Until Sept. 28, customers can donate $1 or more at their local Staples store with 100 percent of the proceeds benefiting local students. All donations will be given locally to the Boys and Girls Club of Atlantic City and Vineland and the Lakehurst Navy Youth Center to ensure they get into the hands of disadvantaged youth just in time for the new school year. Absecon Lighthouse hosts Wacky Wednesdays
The Absecon Lighthouse in Atlantic City, New Jersey’s tallest and the country’s third tallest, is hosting a Wacky Wednesdays children’s activity series this summer. The programs will feature crafts and activities on themes such as Christmas in July, Fables and Fairy Tales, and the Search for Sea Life from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 14.

Meerwald in resort this summer
The A.J. Meerwald, New Jersey’s official tall ship, is scheduled to dock unitl Aug. 11 at Historic Gardner’s Basin in Atlantic City.

Donovan wine dinner set for October
The Community Partnership for Egg Harbor Township Schools, Inc., will host the fourth annual Friends of Chuck Donovan Gourmet Wine Dinner and Auction at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 18, at the private and prestigious Hidden Creek Golf Club in Egg Harbor Township, where Donovan was a long-time member. The event is a fitting tribute to Donovan, who had a great love, appreciation and knowledge of good wine.
As an active member of the Community Partnership from 2007 to 2009, Donovan, who died in 2009, championed efforts to raise funds for academic enhancements, technology, capital projects and extracurricular activities. He was also very involved with the EHT High School Interact Club, mentoring students for many years, and serving as their point person linking them to the local finance and businesses community and helping to secure employment, mentorship and/or internship opportunities for students.

Charity Golf Classic set for September
Atlantic City Electric will hold its eighth annual Charity Golf Classic on Sept. 23 at the Galloway National Golf Club in Galloway Township.

Stockton Golf Classic set for Sept. 26
The Stockton College Golf Classic will take place Sept. 26 at the Stockton Seaview Hotel and Golf Club on Route 9 here.
LPGA Professional Laura Diaz will put on a golf clinic prior to the tournament for the second year in a row.
The Stockton event, which is played on the Bay and Pines courses at historic Stockton Seaview, benefits the College Foundation Scholarship Fund. Last year, more than $69,000 was raised to help deserving students.
The cost ranges from $1,000 for a foursome and sponsorship of a hole sign, to $225 for an individual player. Included are 18 holes of golf, the golf clinic, lunch and dinner. There also will be a silent auction and prizes for the top men’s and women’s teams. Dinner alone is $75 per person.
Sponsorship opportunities are available, ranging from $250 for sponsoring a hole sign, up to $20,000 to be the event’s title sponsor. The deadline for sponsorship is Sept. 12; the deadline to enter the tournament is Sept. 19.

Atlantic Cape Community College will offer a variety of professional development workshops this summer for individuals interested in enhancing their skill sets and advancing their careers.
The Artistry of Innovation: Problem Solving in Action offers participants an opportunity to practice creative thinking skills by engaging in hands-on exercises and address strategies to increase their creative output, beginning Aug. 14.
Building Inspector R.C.S. is designed to satisfy the requirements for licensure as an R.C.S., and includes laboratory and field experience, classes begin Sept. 9.

Produce vouchers available for low-income seniors
Low income Atlantic County residents 60 and older are encouraged to take advantage of the state’s farm market produce voucher program coordinated through the Atlantic County Division of Intergenerational Services.
The annual program provides an opportunity to purchase locally grown produce using $20 worth of free vouchers. The vouchers may be used at participating farm markets through November. The division has received 1,000 vouchers from the USDA, which will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis at the county’s senior centers and several senior housing complexes. The state requires the county to target low-income senior citizens for participation. Residents must be 60 or older with an annual income that does not exceed $21,257 if single or $28,694 for a two-person household. Eligible participants receive four $5 vouchers per person to purchase locally grown fruits, vegetables and herbs from participating farm markets. No vouchers will be issued without proof of income, which may include a Social Security statement, income tax return, bank statement or Medicaid card, as well as proof of identification and residency as verified by a driver’s license, utility bill, bank statement, senior ID card, or posted mail. Recipients must also present proof of age.

Baking workshops in Margate
Each Friday in the summer, children and their parents can bake the traditional Jewish bread called challah. These workshops were offered by Chabad at the Shore at their “Krafts for Kids” location in Margate, until Hurricane Sandy damaged the shore.
This year, Chabad has announced that challah baking will continue at a new location, in the gazebo at the corner of Ventnor and Essex avenues, at 10 a.m. every Friday through the summer. Children learn how to mix the ingredients for challah dough, and the special method of braiding the dough. The workshop is open to the entire community regardless of religion or background. Stranding Center offers educational programs
This summer, the Marine Mammal Stranding Center in Brigantine will present a series of educational programs for visitors of all ages.
Programs allow children to become “stranding technicians” and participate in a re-enactment of actual marine mammal strandings, search for buried treasure, make their own sea monsters and more. International Night Series set

FoodBank needs volunteers
Volunteers with data entry and good interpersonal and multitasking skills are needed to help the FoodBank with registration in its onsite pantry. The group is also looking for help in bagging and boxing food for pantry clients, stocking shelves, sorting food and grocery donations and assisting pantry clients in both its onsite and mobile pantries. Other volunteer opportunities include sweeping, mopping, recycling and general cleaning. They are also looking for folks with a green thumb to help with our community garden as well as help with beautification of the FoodBank property.

VFW taking entries for essay competition
Atlantic County-based Veterans of Foreign Wars District 16 is taking entries for its VFW and Ladies Auxiliary Patriot’s Pen essay scholarship competition for students in sixth through eighth grades.
One first-place winner from each district will be sent to compete at the state level for a chance to compete nationally. The national winner earns a $5,000 scholarship and an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C. To enter, students must write an essay of between 300 and 400 words on the theme “What patriotism means to me.” Students must not identify themselves or their school in the essay, and should do so only on their entry form. Essays must be submitted to the local VFW post by Nov. 1.

VFW seeking nominees for Teacher of the Year
Atlantic-County-based Veterans of Foreign Wars District 16 is seeking nominees for its VFW and Ladies Auxiliary Smart/Maher VFW National Citizenship Education Teacher Award contest.
Each year, three exceptional teachers are recognized by the VFW for their outstanding commitment to teaching patriotism to their students. Post 16 will select one outstanding teacher from kindergarten-fifth grade, sixth-eighth grade and ninth-12th grade. These teachers move on to district level judging for the chance to compete at the state and national levels. National winners will receive a cash award for professional development expenses, a cash award for their school, plaques for themselves and their schools and an all-expenses-paid trip to attend a VFW conference and receive their award.

VFW accepting essays for scholarship contest
Atlantic County-based Veterans of Foreign Wars District 16 is accepting entries for its VFW and Ladies Auxiliary Voice of Democracy scholarship competition, for which local high school students have the opportunity to compete for thousands of dollars and scholarships and a trip to Washington, D.C.
The program is open to students in ninth through 12th grades. Students must write and make an audio recording of an essay between three and five minutes in length expressing their views on the theme of “Why I’m optimistic about our nation’s future.” All essays and accompanying CD recordings must be submitted to a local VFW Post along with the completed V.O.D. entry form. Students must not identify themselves or their school in the essay or CD, and should do so only on their entry form. Submissions are due by Nov. 1.

County offers online golf reservations
Playing golf at the Atlantic County John F. Gaffney Green Tree Golf Course just got a little easier — golfers can reserve a tee time online.
Golfers can access the online reservation system at greentree.aclink.org. The system can accommodate reservations for two to four players with tee times from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. in eight-minute intervals. The system is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Reservations also can be made by calling the clubhouse at 609-625-9131 during business hours.
The Green Tree Golf Course is located on Route 559 in Egg Harbor Township. It is known for its tight, tree lined fairways and its excellent greens. It is home to one of the only par 6 holes in the Northeast. The course provides reduced rates for county residents and offers leagues, clinics, private lessons with a PGA golf professional, special events and activities. A driving range is available, as well as a practice putting/chipping green and snack bar. The Pro Shop is open daily 6 a.m.-7 p.m.

Atlantic Cape Community College's Academy of Culinary Arts will offer Kids in the Kitchen cooking sessions for children ages 8-12 through the summer.

ACPD offers medication drop
The Atlantic City Police Department is one of several in the state to participate in Project Medicine Drop, police said, and officials encourage Atlantic County residents to use the program to safely get rid of old medications.
The program lets people dispose anonymously of unused and expired medications, at any time, at drop boxes in the headquarters of participating police departments. The drop boxes accept solid pharmaceuticals including pills, capsules, patches, inhalers and pet medications. They cannot accept syringes or liquids. Police maintain custody of the deposited drugs, and dispose of them using normal procedures; they also make a quarterly report to the Division of Consumer Affairs about the quantity of drugs turned in.
State Attorney General Jeffrey S. Chiesa said he encourages all Atlantic County residents check their medicine cabinets for expired or unneeded drugs, and bring them to the ACPD drop box, which is available around the clock every day. Atlantic City Police Chief Ernest Jubilee said his agency was pleased to participate in the project.
DVDs needed for service members
AMVETS Post 911 in Somers Point is requesting new and used DVD movies to send to serving military personnel.
Donations of new or good condition DVDs will be accepted at: Chester’s Pastry Pantry Bakery, 506 New Road, Somers Point; Bennett Chevrolet, 6721 Black Horse Pike, Egg Harbor Township; and Essl’s Dugout Restaurant, 7001 Black Horse Pike, Pleasantville. Cash donations will be accepted to help defray the cost of mailing DVDs to the troops. LGBTQ support group meets
Interweave of South Jersey offers a support group for members, family and friends of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning community on the third Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of the South Jersey Shore, 75 S. Pomona Road in Galloway Township.

Program helps children in need find shoes
Youth Advocate Programs Inc. has announced its selection as an official partner of Payless Gives Shoes 4 Kids, an annual giving program from Payless ShoeSource.
YAP has programs in 18 states, and the Atlantic County office was awarded the grant. By helping families who struggle to provide their children with basic essentials, YAP hopes to relieve some of the stress parents feel during the holidays and bring joy to as many children as possible. Bay-Atlantic Symphony plans concerts
The Bay-Atlantic Symphony will bring masterpieces by Tchaikovsky, Schubert, Mozart, Beethoven and Prokofiev to the Borgata Hotel Casino and Spa Music Box Theatre in Atlantic City in a series of concerts until Aug. 18.

Mays Landing Rotary seeks host family
The Mays Landing Rotary Club is seeking a host family for an incoming exchange student from Taubate, Sao Paulo, Brazil, for the 2013-14 school year. The girl, Ana, was 16 in April, and will be a junior.
Host families must live within the area served by Oakcrest High School, which the student will attend. Families will be required to feed the student and provide her a personal place for sleep and study. There is no ideal family the group is looking for, and families with and without children as well as single- and dual-parent families are invited to apply. All applicants will be subject to in-home interviews and background checks.

Group supports families of substance abusers
The Presbyterian Church at Hammonton has created a group to offer hope and support to those with a family member struggling with substance abuse. This group provides a safe, confidential gathering place where stories are heard without judgment. It is a place for those who have watched loved ones struggle with addiction.
The parents, guardians, spouses, children and others affected by family members who struggle with suspected or confirmed substance abuse can find and offer support and learn more about addiction. The group offers hope and the knowledge that we are not alone.

Health care courses offered
The Health Professions Institute at Atlantic Cape Community College will offer programs to help health-care professionals advance their skills.
Emergency Medical Technician Certification will prepare students to perform basic life support. Participants will learn adult and pediatric medical and trauma assessment, basic airway support, use of AED, assisting patients with medication administration, splinting, bleeding control, lifting, transferring and transporting stretchers and patients, beginning Sept. 6.
Lecture and lab modules will take place at the Health Professions Institute at Atlantic Cape’s Worthington Atlantic City Campus, 1535 Bacharach Blvd. Clinical expertise will come from various hospital settings.
