Atlantic County Bar Association offers scholarships
The Atlantic County Bar Association is seeking applicants for its 2014-15 Vincent S. Haneman-Joseph B. Perskie scholarship awards.
Atlantic County residents admitted to an American Bar Association Law school are eligible to apply. The award is based on academic ability, financial need, leadership potential and character.

Jazz scholarship available
The Somers Point Jazz Society has announced the creation of a $1,000 jazz scholarship program for high school student musicians from Atlantic and Cape May counties.
The purpose is to help students gain experience with a qualified jazz educator. For an application, contact the Somers Point Jazz Society at 609-927-6677 or through spjazz.org. An MP3 or CD sampling of the student's work must accompany the application. Applications should be sent to PO Box 329, Somers Point, NJ 08244. A scholarship presentation will take place in May.

Military Ball set for May 10
Joseph T. Hicks, past Commander of the American Legion Kenneth B. Hawkins Post 61 and a county Vice Commander, will lead a distinguished list of honorees - including past Commanders Joseph L. Roderick, the late William Collette and World War II veteran Raymond Coursey - when they are honored for "Decades of Outstanding Service and Contributions" from 6 to 10 p.m. May 10.
The gala takes place at the All Wars Memorial Building, 1510 Adriatic Avenue, Atlantic City. The RCH Student Scholarship Fund, established in honor of past Commanders Roderick, Collette and Hicks, will present scholarships to two students from Atlantic City High School at the event. Kenneth B. Hawkins' 1st Vice Commander Charles Ellis and Comrade E. Marie Rose will be honored by Post 61 for their outstanding contributions to Post 61, veterans, their families and the community. Mother's Day shopping event planned
Eco4u Boutique and the Noyes Arts Garage of Stockton College will host a two day Mothers Day shopping event from noon to 5 p.m May 3-4.
Each day offers access to the Noyes Arts Garage Shops, with unique gifts for Mom, and participation from local small businesses such as florists, bakeries, candy shops, a beauty shop/spa, winery and local restaurants. There will be entertainment discounts and gift wrapping.

Atlantic City Electric reminds customers that they have options to apply for energy assistance if they are having difficulty paying their energy bills.
Due to this past winter's extremely cold temperatures and potentially high energy bills, the federally funded Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program has extended its application deadline and emergency assistance request period to June 30. 'Language and the Brain' workshop set
Beacons by the Sea visiting scholar Dr. Fatjona R. Lubonja will present "Neuroscience: A Conversation with the Latest Research" at 5 p.m. May 7.
The event is free and open to the public at Atlantic Cape Community College, 5100 Black Horse Pike, Mays Landing, in the Walter Edge Theater, C-building. Lubonja's presentation will cover neurological studies applied to language development and learning, and other areas related to learning a second language. The Northfield resident and native of Albania is a multilingual speaker and her scholarly interests are on neuroscience and education, including language aphasia, impact and influence mechanisms that control language and learning.
The visiting professor program is funded by the Atlantic Cape Foundation and Beacons by the Sea, a public arts and fundraising project that placed artist-decorated lighthouses in prominent locations throughout New Jersey's Atlantic and Cape May counties in 2003.
Evening of Wellness planned
On May 7, the Mental Health Association in Atlantic County is sponsoring its annual "Evening of Wellness."
This community-wide benefit is designed to bring together supporters, community colleagues, and the family auxiliary for a fun and educational event. The goal is to provide all attendees with resources to improve their families' wellness - as well as entertain with the Showcase of Talent. There will be a charity auction with baskets of items donated by area businesses, restaurants, spas and entertainment establishments.

Bay-Atlantic Symphony to perform at PAC

Free courses for businesses and nonprofits
Atlantic Cape Community College will offer free Microsoft Office (2010) and social media courses for all New Jersey businesses and nonprofits at the Mays Landing Campus in May.
The free courses are possible through grant funding from the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development in partnership with the New Jersey Council of County Colleges. Last year, New Jersey employers took advantage of more than $1 million worth of no-cost training for their employees. 'Aqua for Life' cancer fundraiser set
Get in the pool for a good cause on May 3 for the second annual Aqua for Life cancer fundraiser at the AtlantiCare LifeCenter.
Participants take part in a 90-minute aqua aerobics class taught by a certified instructor from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in the pool at the AtlantiCare LifeCenter, 2500 English Creek Avenue, Egg Harbor Township. Hammonton Wine Festival planned
The Second Annual Hammonton Wine Festival will take place from noon to 5 p.m. May 3-4 in Hammonton.

College admissions workshop available
The Rothenberg Center for Family Life at Jewish Family Service will present two workshops to help parents and students tackle the college admission process.
The course for parents, "Parents: How to Pay for College," is a complimentary workshop that offers cost-saving measures related to college expenses, financial aid and special scenarios for divorced and single parents. This workshop will be presented by Timothy and Caitlyn Mancuso, Penn Mutual financial advisers, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. May 13.
High school students can attend "How to Write Winning College Essays" from 1 to 3 p.m. May 18. This workshop is recommended for high school juniors and offers tips for college essay and resume writing that get the attention of admission officers. CASA for Children of Atlantic and Cape May Counties is recruiting volunteers and will hold two information sessions in Somers Point.

The Shirley Mae Breast Cancer Assistance Fund presents the annual Shirley Mae Run and Michael J. Walk on May 10.
The event features a 5K run, a 1.5-mile walk, and a Kids' Fun Run. All events will take place on the Atlantic City Boardwalk in front of Tropicana Casino and Resort. Holocaust workshop available for educators
The Sara and Sam Schoffer Holocaust Resource Center at the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey has announced the 31st annual Holocaust Awareness Program with a workshop, "Commemorating the 75th Anniversary of the Kindertransport."
The free workshop, co-sponsored by Atlantic Cape Community College, is open to educators for fifth through 12th grade. It will take place from 4 to 6 p.m. May 1 in the Sara and Sam Schoffer Holocaust Resource Center, on the second floor of Stockton's Richard E. Bjork Library. The event focuses on the rescue of 10,000 children from Germany, Austria, and Czechoslovakia to Great Britain from 1938 to 1940. Resource materials will be distributed that can be used to supplement Holocaust and genocide education for fifth through 12th grades.
Ruth Kessler's memoir, "The Blue Vase: A Memoir of a Vienna Kindertransport Child," also will be provided. Kessler, a Holocaust survivor who now lives in Ventnor, will share her life story with the workshop participants and will sign her memoir for each educator.

5K in May Run/Walk for Marianne set
At 9 a.m. May 3 at Birch Grove Park, Northfield, the Jersey Shore Federal Credit Union will hold its fifth annual 5K in May Run/Walk for the Marianne DiNofrio Pancreatic Cancer Research Foundation, an event that will help combat cancer on two fronts.
Half the proceeds will go to the AtlantiCare Cancer Care Institute and half will go to the pancreatic cancer research division at Fox Chase Cancer Center for pancreatic cancer research. Prize money will be awarded to the top three overall finishers in male and female categories. Certificates will be awarded to top three male and female place finishers in designated categories. Heirloom tomato plant sale set
The Atlantic City Area Religious Society of Friends will hold its second annual Jersey heirloom tomato plant sale on May 10, Mother's Day weekend, on its grounds in Galloway Township.
Sale hours are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 437 S. Pitney Road. Proceeds will help with the cost of the ongoing restoration of the 1828 Quaker meetinghouse.
Mother's Day weekend is the customary time for home gardeners to transplant tomato plants outdoors into gardens in southern New Jersey, when the last chance of frost has passed. For sale will be traditional Jersey varieties such as Morton, Rutgers and Box Car Willie, and plum tomato plants Jersey Devil and Jersey Giant. There also will be Ramapo, a hybrid Jersey tomato, as well as plants suitable for containers, plus as Italian basil plants. The organically grown plants start at $1 for the heirloom tomatoes, which can be difficult to find in home garden centers.
In the case of inclement weather May 10, the sale will extend to May 11 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Help available for low-income Medicaid recipients
Extra help is available for Medicare recipients living on a limited income, who may qualify for as much as $5,000 in annual assistance to help with Medicare expenses.
Income-eligible seniors and people with disabilities who are enrolled in Medicare can save at least $1,000 on health-care expenses by enrolling in a Medicare Savings Program, which will cover the Medicare Part B premium, a savings of $104.90 per month, for qualified people. They may also qualify for an average annual savings of $3,900 on Medicare Part D premiums and prescriptions with a low income subsidy. In addition to discounts on brand-name and generic medications, there are no co-pays or deductibles for annual wellness visits and personalized prevention plan services.

Communication Awards set at Atlantic Cape
The seventh annual Communication Awards will take place May 2 at Atlantic Cape Community College.
The event will feature student-produced videos and performances by Communication Major of the Year nominees. Individual students, alumni, faculty and media professionals will be awarded for their work in the field.
JoJo and Scotty of 100.7 WZXL-FM will host the show, which also will feature Michelle Dawn Mooney, NBC-40 news anchor; Dr. Joy Jones-Carmack, Mrs. New Jersey 2013; Nannette LoBiondo Galloway, Alumna of the Year; Larry Litwin, Rowan University professor emeritus and Atlantic Cape adjunct; and Keith Forrest, Atlantic Cape Faculty Member of the Year. For the first time, Alumni Pioneer Awards will be given out. These will be awarded to Arielle Reamer 2011 and Madison Russ 2012. The top award winners include: Pat Campbell, of Dorothy, Briar Gibbons, of Egg Harbor City, Max Fineran, of Galloway Township, Richard Mead, of Dorothy, and Annabeth Gibson, of Cape May Court House. Two sibling teams are among the winners, including twin sisters Casey and Taylor Bailey, of Hammonton, and Annabeth and Jon Gibson, of Cape May Court House. Graduate Research Symposium planned
The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey's second annual Graduate Research Symposium, hosted by the School of Graduate and Continuing Studies, will showcase research by master's degree candidates.
The symposium will take place April 30 at 6 p.m. in the Campus Center Event Room, located on the college's main Galloway campus. More than 40 presenters will deliver their research projects. Choral Music Program announces schedule
The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey's Choral Music Program springs into action at the end of April with choral concerts.
The Stockton College Chorus, the Stockton Select Chorale Ensemble, the Vocal Jazz Ensemble, and the Stockton Oratorio Society will take the stage to deliver performances in many musical genres. On May 3, the Stockton Oratorio Society presents a tribute to the life of composer William L. Dawson. Featuring spiritual works such as 'Every Time I Feel the Spirit' and 'Ain't That a Good Thing.' The performance will take place in the Alton Auditorium at 7:30 p.m.

Atlantic Cape Community College will offer a series of workshops for people interested in educating themselves on launching a nonprofit business.
Introduction to Grant Writing will take participants through a step-by-step grant writing process, including identifying funding sources, matching their program with funding sources, writing proposals and managing their award, two Thursdays, May 8 and 15.
Business Plan Writing: What Do You Propose? will offer attendants a foundation for planning their future and provide a sample business plan they can develop on their own, whether they are looking to start a business, expand their business, or redesign their business, two Thursdays, May 22 and 29.

LoBiondo's office seeks high school art submissions

Submissions must be no larger than 28 by 28 inches, and 4 inches in depth (including the frame), and can be: paintings (oil, acrylics, watercolor etc); drawings (pastels, colored pencil, pencil, charcoal, ink, markers); collage (must be two-dimensional); prints (lithographs, silkscreen, block prints); mixed media (use of two or more mediums); computer-generated art; and, photography. Each submitted piece must be accompanied by a signed release form by the artist.
All submissions are due to LoBiondo's Mays Landing office by April 30. The winning submission will be displayed for one year in the tunnel connecting the Cannon House Office Building and the U.S. Capitol, which is part of the main tour route of visitors to Capitol Hill. The second and third place submissions will be displayed in the Congressman's D.C. and Mays Landing offices, respectively.

Survey seeks residents affected by Sandy
More than 22,000 Atlantic County residents registered for federal assistance in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. A new online survey seeks their input as well as those who were affected but did not request assistance.
The survey is sponsored by the Atlantic County Division of Public Health in partnership with the Mental Health Association of New Jersey. It is meant to determine the unmet health, mental health and social service needs of county residents who were affected by Hurricane Sandy and is based upon a framework developed by the New Jersey Department of Health. The brief online survey is strictly confidential. Participants will not be asked for personal identifying information and will not be contacted. Survey results will also be used to create a plan to link Sandy-affected residents with long-term recovery and educational outreach activities. Nature Reserve plans cleanup
The Egg Harbor Township Nature Reserve plans its Spring Clean Up, with the meeting time at 8:30 a.m. May 3.

Chamber teams up with Gloves 4 Troops
The Greater Egg Harbor Chamber is thinking spring and hoping to brighten the lives of U.S. service members by teaming up with Gloves 4 Troops, an organization that ships baseball gloves, balls and letters of encouragement to American military personnel stationed across the globe.
Gloves 4 Troops was started by Vance Albitz, a second baseman for the AAA St. Louis Cardinals affiliate, Memphis Redbirds, and over the past two years the organization has sent thousands of gloves overseas. Permanent drug disposal box set up
Atlantic County residents will have more opportunities to safeguard their homes from prescription drug abuse at a permanent American Medicine Chest Challenge disposal box, the Sheriff's Office said.
With the support and collaboration of Actavis, the Partnership for a Drug-Free New Jersey, parent organization of the American Medicine Chest Challenge, recently awarded the Atlantic County Sheriff's Office a permanent collection box for the disposal of unused, unwanted and expired medicine. The box will be located in the vestibule of the Mays Landing Criminal Court Complex, which is open to the public 7:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday.

Project seeks Sandy-affected residents
Due to the ongoing issues that victims of Hurricane Sandy continue to experience, Community Health Law Project has received a contract from the state Department of Human Services to work with residents affected by the storm who were or are living in Atlantic, Cape May, Bergen, Hudson, Monmouth, Ocean, Middlesex, Essex and Union counties.
With this funding, the Community Health Law Project is able to provide legal assistance, as well as case management.

SCOSA seeks volunteers
The Stockton Center on Successful Aging is seeking volunteers to participate in a research project on the campus of the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey, 101 Vera King Farris Dr., Galloway Township.
This research is designed to explore the relationship between activity in the brain and thinking and memory. The research project, "Healthy Brain, Healthy Mind," is directed by Dr. Jessica Fleck, associate professor of psychology. While many are screened for blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, skin cancers and other conditions is common for older adults, very few people have ever participated in a screening of brain health and function. The National Institute on Aging suggests that changes in the physical brain may occur a decade or more before changes in memory and thinking are observed. If so, early detection of changes in the physical brain is key to long-term health and vitality. The study is comprised of two sessions, each an hour to 90 minutes long. Fleck is looking for healthy participants who are between 45 and 64 years old.
For this project, participants must be right-handed and have no prior diagnosis of dementia, neurological disorder, or traumatic brain injury. The project involves the use of EEG, which measures electrical activity in the brain. Tests of memory and thinking will also be administered in a second session. Participants who score outside the normal range will be provided referrals for further neurological assessment.

Atlantic Cape offers online training
Atlantic Cape Community College's Continuing Education division, in partnership with Education to Go, is offering professionals the opportunity to upgrade their current skills and develop new talents through online training courses.

Arts workshops for teens set
Teens who are interested in the visual and performing arts are invited to participate in a variety of Saturday workshops through April as part of the Atlantic County Teen Arts Academy.
The goal of the Teen Arts Academy is to provide area young people with greater arts education opportunities and to enhance the skills needed in preparation for college or a professional program. The Teen Arts Academy is a collaborative effort of area arts organizations and educational institutions to provide teens with new opportunities for learning in the visual, performing and literary arts.
Workshops include Creative Writing: Zines for Teens; Printmaking; Watercolor Painting; Songwriting; Musical Theatre Styles and Audition; Digital Self-Portraiture and more. Each workshop is three hours at a cost of $30, which includes materials. All participants must register. A minimum of seven registrants is required for each workshop to proceed. Jan-Ai scholarships available
Scholarships ($500-$1,000) are now available from the Jan-Ai Scholarship Fund to high school seniors pursuing a college degree in the arts to include the following: music, visual arts, theater and dance. Visit the website to download the application. May 12 is the deadline for all applications.

'Joseph Project' planned in Margate
The Beth El Abram and Rose Weiss Hebrew School, under the supervision of teacher Tamar Spanier, once again will sponsor "The Joseph Project."
Spanier and students go to local stores to purchase new coats, gloves, hats and other winter clothing essentials for adults and children who otherwise would not have these items. The community's assistance is requested in sponsoring needy families in the area - donors are asked to bring or mail a monetary donation to Beth El Synagogue to help purchase new coats. The coats will be distributed by Jewish Family Service, which helps the entire community, regardless of nationality or religion.

Give a taste of the area's finest restaurants this season, while giving back to a good cause - the organizers of the annual Chefs at the Shore are making tickets available early specifically for holiday gifts.
The 2014 Chefs at the Shore fundraiser is scheduled for 5:30 to 9 p.m. June 19 at Historic Gardner's Basin in Atlantic City. The event showcases some of the area's finest food while it funds educational programming at the Atlantic City Aquarium. Proceeds also go to fund chef educational programs and scholarships for culinary students for the Professional Chefs Association.

Jewish Family Service of Atlantic and Cape May Counties has announced that its newest initiative, Village by the Shore, is now accepting members.
This nondenominational program offers services and socializing for Atlantic County adults 50 and older through a concierge style. The Village is not a physical place, but a movement enhancing the people's lives to get the most from their community at any stage of life.
